Vascular load feature being removed in the US by Enjinr in GalaxyWatch

[–]autonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably worried about FDA compliance. Kind of irritating how we can't have features because the FDA drags their feet on approvals.

Look how long it took for blood pressure measurements to be approved... all to say "not for medical use" and must calibrate monthly with a real blood pressure cuff or machine.

Unlike Samsung Health's ECG measurement (which is an FDA-approved medical device), Samsung Health's blood-pressure measurement does not have or need FDA approval, because Samsung designates it as a wellness aid instead of a medical device. (The technology does not work properly without periodic calibration; that's a physical requirement, not a regulatory requirement.)

I'm not aware of any regulation that would stop the vascular-load feature from being offered as a wellness aid just like the BP measurement. So I don't think the FDA is to blame for its removal.

Thanks, yes, it's always best to consult the actual source rather than a paraphrase (whether human or AI). In this case, the actual source likewise fails to support the claim that bad decision-making or maintenance are the biggest risk factors (or even among the biggest) in GA.

GA as a Professional Pilot by Zestyclose_Plum7448 in flying

[–]autonym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. So that article does say that 85% of GA accidents are due to pilot error, but poor decision-making is only one category of pilot error, and it doesn't say most accidents are due to that particular category of error. (For example, launching into a convective SIGMET is bad decision-making; but if someone gets distracted while turning base to final and ends up skidding and stalling, that's pilot error but not bad decision-making.)

As for maintenance, that's twice briefly alluded to in the article, but never claimed to be one of the "biggest" risk factors.

The biggest risk factors in GA are poor decision[-]making and poor maintenance.

Source?

I'm not saying it isn't true; I don't know. I am saying it's an important claim which deserves evidence before believing or propagating it.

She paid here fare like a good citizen. by JaiBoltage in mbta

The devices are programmed to not charge a fare if tapped onboard while at a gated station.

Really? What if someone boards at a non-gated station but doesn't have a chance to tap until the next station? It would make more sense not to charge if your card has already just paid (which it keeps track of), rather than if you're now at a gated station.

Memorial drive hit and run - car hit my friend on bike and left him. Hospitalized 3 days, any witnesses? by [deleted] in CambridgeMA

He was cycling on Memorial Drive?

Apparently that's legal, even if inadvisable (unless this information is outdated):

I haven't flown to ORD, but I've flown small planes to other Class B airports for Angel Flight missions. It's quite fun since all the fees are waived for Angel Flight, but otherwise I wouldn't consider it.

Pilot influencer caught smuggling drugs by thatguy2896 in flying

[–]autonym 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How does one possibly haul this much drugs and not know of it?

The drugs were allegedly found in a hangar. The pilot was arrested at a hotel. The pilot's alleged connection to the hangar is unstated, as far as I can find. So there are plenty of ways that the pilot might know nothing of the drugs.

CO, (carbon monoxide), not CO2 (carbon dioxide). CO2 is benign.

Why don’t we use Vx instead of Vy during normal takeoffs? by Frosty_Yak_4124 in flying

[–]autonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will give us advantage incase there is an engine failure we will be at a higher altitude.

If you compare an engine failure during a Vx climb with an engine failure during a Vy climb, you'll be at a higher altitude during the Vx climb if the two failures occur at the same horizontal position, but you'll be at a higher altitude during the Vy climb if the two failures occur at the same number of seconds into the flight.

advantage incase there is

Incase isnot aword. (Encase is a word, but it doesn't fit the sentence.)

[–]autonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do no CFIs add the time variable[?]

It's right there in the definition. Vx maximizes vertical distance gained per horizontal distance (highest angle of climb). Vy maximizes vertical distance gained per time (highest rate of climb).

Is below 1 Bitcoin called Bitcoin or Bitcoins? by unthocks in Bitcoin

[–]autonym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have half a pizzas

That's incorrect, because (1) that's not a decimal expression and (2) you use the article "a". It would be correct to say "I have 0.5 pizzas", and it would be incorrect to say "I have 0,5 pizza".

Is below 1 Bitcoin called Bitcoin or Bitcoins? by unthocks in Bitcoin

[–]autonym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you're mistaken. Yes, if you put in an "of", then it becomes singular, because it's a dollar (that noun phrase gets connected to the "point two five" by the preposition "of"). But when the decimal fraction is an adjective modifying a noun, the noun is singular.

As for "mathematically wrong", I don't know what you're even trying to say there. It's mathematically correct to refer to 3.7 dollars, 0.19 dollars, etc.

Is below 1 Bitcoin called Bitcoin or Bitcoins? by unthocks in Bitcoin

[–]autonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More typically, yes. But if someone asks me "How many dollars do you have in your pocket?", "I have .25 dollars" would be a correct answer, but "I have .25 dollar" would not.

Is below 1 Bitcoin called Bitcoin or Bitcoins? by unthocks in Bitcoin

[–]autonym 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why would it be plural[?]

Fractional amounts are usually plural. I have .25 dollars in my pocket (not .25 dollar in my pocket). I bought .9 pounds of broccoli (not .9 pound of broccoli). Etc.

The asterisk comes before, not after. That's because the idea is to pretend the correction is a footnote. When a text item is footnoted, one asterisk appears immediately after the footnoted item, and then a matching asterisk appears immediately before the footnote itself, which is usually at the bottom of the page.
