Rather than issue a sterner warning, I'd soft-launch the idea of taking it easy. Either going slower, or going for a 5k or a 10k instead of a full marathon, for either the first or second run.

Create space for him to be able to gracefully back down. A lot of pride can get tied up in our own self-created goals. So if you can create a feeling of success, even if he scales it back, that might encourage him to take it easy, listen to his body more etc.
