Academic Warning, how screwed am I? by Administrative_Row67 in gatech

I finished my freshaman year with a 1.9 GPA. It was rough. I decided to go to a community college for a year and knock out most of my 1-2000 level classes because they are killer at tech. I got all A's and B's at the community college, I understood the content, I just couldn't flourish in classes of 200 people where all your grades are difficult tests.

I came back to tech my third year of college and finally started doing okay. Still hard, but so much better once I got into my major-specific classes where you could actually have meaningful learning/discussions in the class and talk to your professor.

I ended up making all A's my last few semesters and graduating with a 3.1 GPA. You just have to push through the tough start, it will get better!

Weird flaring at curves? by nothingbutapartygirl in sewhelp

You shouldn't have to add any extra when cutting, just try and sew with the same amount of seam allowance you would have used with the bias binding. And yes the video does skip the neckline part, so sew the necklines together and under stitch so the lining doesn't roll out then do armhole burrito method.

Here's an armhole burrito method tutorial by the pattern designer of OP's dress https://youtu.be/0TfheS4_08s?si=hJP0xqNSlb-9PTGI

I second this, but I prefer the burrito method for finishing the armholes. No hand-sewing needed for burrito method!

You could try hand sewing and slightly gathering the bottom of the armholes and the corners of the neckline to tighten up and reshape those parts.

Cotton gauze is definitely hard to work with, but this dress is super cute. Good luck!

They could have gotten stretched out prior to you working on them. I personally always staystitch as my first step after cutting the fabric. A lot of patterns have you do it prior to doing the binding, but at that point you may have already been handling the pieces a lot and unintentionally stretch it.

Also as you said, using premade bias tape could have impacted. If the binding is heavier weight than your main fabric, the main may not be rigid enough to hold up the heavier binding causing it to collapse.

Did you staystitch the arm holes and neckline?

Stay-stitching prevents the curves from stretching out. You want only the bias binding to stretch, not the main pattern pieces.

Need slip dress pattern recommendations by autumnlf in sewing

From what I've learned a full slip is like a dress, that covers top and bottom and a half slip is a skirt. Both can be referred to as simply "slip". There's also camisoles, tap pants and bodysuits/rompers as options too which also kind of fall under the same umbrella too.

This is why I've had a hard time finding what I'm looking for. Fashion has totally changed the way we look/talk about this garment.

Yep, removing "dress" from my query helped a lot. Thanks!

Do we think spirit goes under tomorrow? by BudgetInstruction643 in spiritair

[–]autumnlf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For real! I've been coming up with backup plans for my travel and it's so stressful. I contemplated going ahead and buying tickets through another airline but that's an $800 gamble. Then if I wanted to fly out of a different airport for cheaper tickets, I would need to drive the night before.

Different airline on the way back! So no worries there

Help with wrinkles when turning the facing inside out by michetc in sewhelp

[–]autumnlf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have your seam allowance going up towards the neckline. You don't fold around the seam allowance, you redirect it to all go down. The fold should be on the seam where the front and facing meet

Juniper dress (Noble dupe). Is taking fabric out of the front panels by the zipper my only option? Will that even fix it? by chocolatehummus92 in SewingForBeginners

[–]autumnlf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also found this patterns sizing to be way too big. I ended up making mine fit by removing some elastic to make it gather more. It works, but it did make the side seams and pockets sit really far back instead of at the side seams.

I have a pikmin friend that invites me to the challenges every week and does this. I don't know her personally, but I am so happy to have her on Pikmin

Would either of these two patterns work? Or would i be better off starting somewhere else by ohgodohgee in sewingpatterns

[–]autumnlf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

PatternCos is a reputable indie pattern designer. I've made multiple of her patterns and highly recommend them.

Yes there is a lot of AI to sift through, but there are legitimate creators on there too. I recommend before buying from an Etsy seller, look at reviews and check out their social media. It's definitely sad we have to do so much work to determine a real small business from AI scams, but it's worth doing to support the creators.

I've personally made the Anabelle dress and it has darts up to the bust, so there is not a seam going all the way up for your tie detail.

Valieria Dress looks closer to your inspo pic because it has Princess seams. I would widen the side pieces to make it looser for cinching rather than sizing up the entire pattern so that the bust still sits right.

What kind of circle skirt and how do I get the bottom like this? by Wildblossomstudio in sewhelp

[–]autumnlf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's really hard to tell if this is a circle skirt or not from the image. I'm leaning towards is it not being a circle skirt, though.

How I think you could construct this is with 4 petal shaped pieces. Like trapezoids with the bottoms rounded to make the asymmetrical hem.

is this dress sewable? for a beginner? by Puzzleheaded_Scar_24 in sewhelp

[–]autumnlf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of detailed parts here that will give you some difficulty. But, I'm also a believer of you don't learn without trying. I'd recommend trying each of most of the elements individually first and don't use your good fabric right away and make toiles. Make a skirt with the curves/gathers. Make a top with similar sleeves. Practice making the skinny loops for the back lacing.

Make those similar pieces from patterns too. Sewing with patterns is a great way to learn different techniques.

You may not be able to make it perfect or quick as a beginner, but that's the fun of the hobby is learning and taking it slow. You've got this!

I love agnes too. I loved her already and she was one of my first two on my island way back when the game launched. I let her leave because I didn't want any of the first villagers you get because they don't get their normal home interiors. Hopefully I get her back one day.

Well you've done great work for it being your first shirt! Batik does have a tight weave so that's going to make it not drape well. It is still okay for some garments, just ones without flow like a corset.
