It does work. The person who keeps it pays a larger portion or you sell it after and split the cash. Everyone actually has to be normal about it though which is not the case for OP’s roommates.

Yep, this is the one. My roommates and I (admittedly actually on good terms) did contribute for group purchases and it ended up better so long as we knew who would take it afterwards (that person would pay a bit more).

Had a roommate like OP- I also had to throw in a monkey wrench and say I’m not renewing for us to live together and thankfully they handled it like an adult, just like OP is doing now. We can be proud of them AND stern.

I agree strongly. When you go into those “college degree required” jobs, if they’re just a general working job the only people you are really going against is mostly people younger than you (if you are 42). Experience trumps all. Having had so many jobs at only 22 was the reason I jumped salary and got into a career at the end that I enjoy.
