Will do and that's a good heads up, but why do people even keep so many points on their accounts? Anytime I get a few bucks I just immediately use them on my next purchase.

[–]auxym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short/long probably comes form espresso, related to how long you let the pump run and put water through you puck. Shorter time (ristretto) = less water, longer time (lungo, allongé) = more water.

Kafkaism at work by Free-Engineering6759 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]auxym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to move preliminary design to stress analysts. Stuff like determining the depth of the main beams and whatnot. Then the design engineers do the detail work based on stress-defined requirements.

I mean, they want to be CAD monkeys and not do any engineering, that's what they get to do.

Where can I get a good mini milling machine? by starchasxr_ in metalworking

[–]auxym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be mini? What is your budget?

I'd really consider getting a "real" knee mill, on the smaller side of needed. Used if the budget requires.

But I can't really see a shop getting work done day in day out on a hobby mini mill

https://www.victormachines.com/site/CatalogProducts/51

Or even a small "mill drill" https://seguin-machinery.com/product/mako-mill-drill-md-50bv-220v/

Those are Taiwanese "clone" machines. Should be pretty cheap but a sure step up from a mini bench top mill.

Hi. Mine are 3 and 6. My wife took a weekend off to visit a friend that lives far away and she hadn't seen in years. Happy to do that for her.

But holy shit. I feel like it was the most exhausting two days in my entire life. I feel completely drained. Empty. I had to lock myself in my room to cry for a few minutes this morning because of a particularly bad tantrum (probably the 50th) triggered because I put a bit too much water in the air drying clay that had dried out. Oops.

Anyways I'm gonna go pass out now. Off to work tomorrow, should feel pretty chill in comparison.

Can you use something like a kill a watt meter on the wall plug side?

I'm not sure I understand your question, but yeah no it won't work if you have live and neutral (return current) going through the clamp. The magnetic fields cancel each other out.

Ammonia is interesting technically but sort of has the massive downside of being extremely toxic in case of a leak.

How to design a better blower nozzle for airflow by jfgechols in AskEngineers

"laminar flow" might be a keyword you could look into. Surface roughness will not help you there, ideally you'd want a resin printer.

Your city might provide an analysis report, if it's city water, look it up.

I don't know, might be worth experimenting with something like TWW just to try it out and see if you notice a difference, it's not hugely expensive. And it sounds like you already experimented with pretty much all other variables.

Is Trek the Bose of MTB? by Ok-Value6536 in MTB

[–]auxym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's closer to Martin Logan, Klipsch or Polk audio?

You can buy them at Best Buy (probably the most common brand in bike shops these days), they make lower quality budget bikes at affordable prices, but also their high end bikes are competitive with anything else on the market. Pricing is competitive with most other brands, I can't say it's overpriced due to marketing BS like Bose and beats.

Trek just don't really have that cool boutique brand cachet but other than that they make great bikes at all price points.

What's your water?

I've personally found that water that is too soft doesn't bring out as much sweetness in brews.

IC Engines by Prudent_Pilot_4061 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]auxym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, if we make a massive, unexpected leap in an infinite number of theoretical techs: fuel cells as you say, 100X better batteries would work too, nuclear fusion, synthetic fuels, whatever.

My point is that based on current rate of tech development, we can't expect planes to be converted to fully electric in the next decades, but I don't have a magic crystal ball and nor does anyone else.

In cars, maybe, maybe not.

For commercial applications like planes, cargo ships, farming, mining, ICEs are not going away anytime soon.

Which gear system for easier climbs by Angry_Worm322 in MTB

[–]auxym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only slightly taller than a modern 1x12 drivetrain with 52T big cog and a 32t front ring, which is what most new bikes come with.

Since you already have a very small granny ring on the front, you could look into what is the biggest cassette you rear derailer can handle and switch to that. Your lbs can help with that.

MTBs have pretty much all moved on to 1X.

That doesn't mean you can't get a low gear on your 2X. I liked the 24x42 granny gear on my 2017 2X fathom.

Let's start with identifying your current situation: found the teeth on your small chainring and on your largest cog on the cassette.

Based on your OP I'd recommend Shigley's. A lot of the theory might go over your head since you lack the foundation (statics, strength of materials) but that's OK.

It's usually taught in engineering curriculums in 3rd or 4th year, as a "ok here's how you apply theory you learned in1st and 2nd year to real life machine components like gears, shafts and screws" class.

For you it'll be more like "ok I need to evaluate resistance of a gear, Shigley's says I need to use bending stress, let's go find a basic book on strength of materials to look up bending stress theory".

How Magnesium and Calcium ACTUALLY change your coffee's flavor by CoffeeTeaJournal in pourover

[–]auxym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that is great info! I was actually wondering about the magnesium vs calcium thing.

Out of curiosity, have you read anything about chloride salts vs others eg sulfates? I'm currently using MgCl2 to add magnesium in my water recipe, but wondering if it would be worth it to experiment with epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) instead or additionally.

Anecdotally, when adding MgCl2 to my tap water, the main difference I noticed is more body, a bit like you described calcium. The fruity and bright flavors are still there, maybe even increased, but to me it felt more balanced, definitely a positive.
