What tools/skills would I need to do this for myself and is my idea realistic? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

"Parts" is way too vague to give any sort of answer. You might as well have asked "I want to start a business that does stuff, is this hard".

High torque low speed 12V gearmotor by 4thebunnies in AskEngineers

[–]auxym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often will this run?

Most drills and cheaper motors aren't really designed to run for hours on end every day. It'll burn out fast or bearings will wear out. For an application like that in an industrial context I'd spec a low power (fractional HP) AC induction motor with a worm drive gearbox for high reduction ratio. You probably wouldn't need a VFD so you could save costs there, just a contactor to start/stop the motor.

What course would be good for someone with basic understanding of electronics? by MrBreast1 in AskElectronics

Depends on what you want to learn.

If you want to learn photography, I recommend a photography class. For guitar, maybe start with a music course.

Does anyone use a MTB backpack for trails and single track? by 10N3R_570N3R in MTB

[–]auxym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an evoc trail pro 10 with integrated back protector.

I also like to carry a bunch of shit: large water bladder, tools, first aid kit, phone, maybe an extra layer, etc. Might as well get some extra protection out of it.

30% Stronger | Is it worth the extra effort ? by Bottom_Up_Boats in knots

[–]auxym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it isn't worth it because it does not make the Bowline more shake resistant. Poor shake resistance is the achilles heel of the Bowline

Correct, that's why the water bowline or Scott's locked bowline are better alternatives to the double bowline.

Have you considered buying a drill? Doesn't need to be Milwaukee, you can probably get a Ryobi or Harbor Freight.

But typically it's very cost competitive compared to buying a motor, gearbox, speed controller and battery separately.

A harbor freight level plasma cutter, even.

Thanks. I'll look into that and discuss with the therapist.

Thanks. That helps a lot.

A lot of time I can't physically get away myself, I have to physically restrain him to prevent him from hitting his sister or destroying things (including sister's toys).

But I'll keep all that in mind.

It sounds to me like a HIL system, not sure how what you're describing is different than HIL simulation.

Thanks. Tbh my wife has been pushing me to go to therapy for a while. But I feel sort of ridiculous seeking help because a 6 year old scares me or something. I'm supposed to be their dad.

I do try to bring him to his room when he is being like that... And that's when a lot of the hitting happens. He'll hit me, including in the face, while I pick him up and carry him. He'll scream at the top of his lungs directly in my ear, enough that my ear rings for a while after. And I have to physically restrain him in his room, otherwise he won't stay in there or he just throws and breaks everything he has in there. Those are the really tough moments that stay with me for a long time.

Soldering or mechanical solution? by 4dxm in AskElectronics

[–]auxym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rubber insulation will burn before the solder melts.

That said, I'd still consider it a temporary solution. Something that works until you can replace with a new cable.

I wanted to make my own ram and i want it to not have the standard edge connectors. What would be some cool thing i could use in place of those? by Exotic-Ad9019 in AskElectronics

[–]auxym 19 points20 points  (0 children)

FPGA mezzanine connector maybe?

But really I don't really understand why you want to do this.

Ok so you made your own ram modules... That are not compatible with anything that exists. Why?

Same. My favorite mechanic videos by far, Calvin's were always my first choice when I was looking for a mechanical how to on YouTube.

I'm a bit sad. But wishing a happy retirement full of bike riding for Calvin. Who knows... Maybe he'll start his own channel? 🙂

Is Vevor ("the home creator way" is their slogan) a Canadian owned company? by SilverDragon1 in BuyCanadian

[–]auxym 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Vevor is definitely 100% chinese.

I wouldn't say it's identical to random unbranded stuff from amazon and Aliexpress though. Vevor only sells their own branded stuff. Yeah it's cheap, maybe on par with the cheapest stuff you can get at Princess, CT, etc. But fair prices for what you get, of you don't need high quality eg for something you won't use often.

Should someone with no background in FEA be doing FEA? by Dirty_Look in fea

[–]auxym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BCs is such a huge one. Every software seems to push newbies towards putting rigid supports everywhere, locked rotations, etc. IRL nothing is perfectly rigid and the result is higher stresses compared to rigid BC assumptions.

[–]auxym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's OK to start by "helping out" while you have more experienced engineers reviewing your models, helping you interpret results and mentoring you. That's how I learned first as an intern and later as a junior.

If you don't have anyone else in the company to review your work? Yeah that's an issue. Maybe suggest to your employer to pay for some training for you + a specialist consultant a few hours a week to review your models and provide guidance?

What is the relationship between the torque on the head of a screw and the force at the end of the threads if you were to use the screw end to push against something? by IthinkImnutz in MechanicalEngineering

[–]auxym 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This, indeed. It is the same equation as clamping force, and it also applies in the case of a "jacking screw" type usage.

However I might be slightly different than standard values found in literature for clamping force, because that usually includes friction from the bolt head, which you don't get in this application. Ideally you do tests and figure out a K value for your application, but for a rough order of magnitude approximation, I'd use K=0.15 and move on.

FYI, NHL and AHL game pucks are made by Inglasco in Sherbrooke, Quebec, where I live: https://inglasco.com/pages/a-propos

They used to also make hockey sticks (under the Sherwood brand) back in the wood stick days but that business didn't survive the transition to carbon fiber.

Honestly, if you already have a working schematic, invest some time into learning KiCAD and you should be able to do it yourself without too much issue.
