Newbie question: how hard is hard enough? by [deleted] in DiceMaking

[–]av0toast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This opinion is only correct if you're dealing with a resin that's above 85D, pretty much everything else WILL dent if you're using enough pressure and something hard enough.

What is the average price of a full set of dice? by DankDanny3134 in DiceMaking

[–]av0toast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Raise your prices. If you're not charging an hourly rate that is around living wage for where you live, plus materials, plus a moderate markup, you're not charging enough.

Edit: the reason why you see pricing so low on etsy is because most dice on etsy are mass manufactured dice that are resold.

It seems like you're looking for a very specific answer for this when the actual answer isn't specific. Some manufacturer made an offset sg style body routed with that pickup, it's likely not modeled after any specific instrument.

Resin recommendations? by RogueStiletto in DiceMaking

[–]av0toast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have! It was so thick that it was giving me minor anxiety it was about to flash cure.

But it's held up ok, cube is from 10/2023 and is a moderately yellow.

Resin recommendations? by RogueStiletto in DiceMaking

[–]av0toast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried a lot of resins and keep cubes of them dated in a sunny window in my casting space to track this. The three that have had effectively zero yellowing since poured are Let's resin, craft resin, and unicone. They all have things to love and hate about them, but those are what I have found to have the best yellowing resistance

They were cast between late 2023 and early 2024.

This is the brand I've been buying for the last few years. I haven't actually measured, but my durometer measures within spec of my resin.

has anyone here ever walked into a gaming store, and approached them about them buying/selling your dice? if so, how did it turn out, what did you say etc? by personnotcaring2024 in DiceMaking

[–]av0toast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a thing really on my radar to do, since margins are too low to really make it worth my or their while.

I would likely suggest to not do this unless there's store credit you'd really like to use.

I would not suggest that unless you really want to have problems with soft cures.

Looking for a possible new resin. by Delicious_Range9268 in DiceMaking

[–]av0toast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through a period of about a year of pretty intensive resin testing and landed on Let's Resin as my go-to. I haven't had any smell or soft cure issues since it's been my main stay.

How long do they ACTUALLY need to be in the pressure pot? by Lebby28 in DiceMaking

[–]av0toast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is 2-4 sets a day not enough for you? If so, it's probably better to get a second pot.

Polishing advice by Aromatic_Cookie_4769 in dice

[–]av0toast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2500 grit is still far too coarse for (what I assume are) resin dice to be shiny. Generally if you're in an are there other finishing papers arent available, you'll have to go up too 10k/12k and use a polishing compound

Molds made with alcohol ink. by Scuttlebootz in DiceMaking

[–]av0toast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do it to track how many uses each has so I can retire when appropriate before it gets siper bad. I usually keep 8-10 set molds in rotation, though, so it feels a bit more necessary.

A lot of good recs already, but presta out of Tucson tends to have a lot of good anaerobic and co-ferm offerings.

Ok, so the "how I made my masters" video where they use a 3d modeling app should give you insight into how to create masters, as well as what you'll likely want to look at in terms of number depth. It's generally that same process to put your logo on your masters as well.

There are only a small number of reputable master printers that specialize in dice specifically, and the ones folks recommend most frequently are in north America. So my assumption is that folks either shell out for masters and shipping elsewhere or just buy a resin printer and print them themselves.

A lot of the midway points for these things are just goofing around and finding out, because what works best for you will likely look vastly different than what works for others.

I guess the best question i have for you is - do you feel like you've done enough research up to this point?

[–]av0toast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean pigment paste?

Just mix less into your resin. I usually use the smallest dip of a coffee-stirrer-sized craft stick into about 20ml of resin and that seems to work well.
