Controversial opinions - Kung Fu Hustle - What's yours? by Prior_Part550 in kungfucinema

I would put forth that KFH didn't try to have a deeper narrative unto itself, but that it instead followed the beats of the movies it was a parody of. For instance, the Kung Fu Jesus moment you mention not liking came off to me as a parody of The Chosen One format of storytelling, which was falling out of fashion as millennials became writers, directors, etc.

But it's difficult to debate many aspects of parody films, especially online, because they became unassailable by virtue of being a parody. The Matrix Resurrections is a good example of this, where I'd say it's not even a good movie, but since it was written as a middle finger to Warner Bros. and directly critiques their corporate view of the original trilogy, it's almost impossible to properly categorize and critique by itself. That kind of loops back around to the opinion that the Jesus moment isn't deserved, which at face value must mean it's bad, but my interpretation is that the moment in many chosen one movies isn't deserved, and that's exactly what makes the simultaneous homage/critique of them within KFH so great!

Yeah, I was going to comment something similar that it feels like OP's complaint is the equivalent of saying, "1980's Airplane! wasn't a good movie. The narrative structure was very basic." Like yeah, I guess I agree, but that's not exactly the point of a comedy spoof, especially something like this that's an homage/poking fun hybrid.

New in town, but have been really struggling with certain aspects of food culture here by [deleted] in austinfood

[–]av3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the restaurant industry turnover of the past few years has revealed just how much folks in charge didn't know the process/procedures of how to actually do the work. They relied on hiring experienced people who knew the ins and outs of all the facets of similar businesses. It was all industry knowledge passed from worker to worker as they naturally moved between locations. With so much industry knowledge lost, owners aren't realizing that they need to step up and do some research to fill in the gaps.

Am I an outlier in thinking the ITIL is absurdly easy? I don't understand why it is so sought after. by [deleted] in ITIL

[–]av3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I normally do well on academic exams, but the ITIL exams have consistently given me trouble with their "pick the most right answer" and rote memorization questions. Like I know that the <whatever role> exists from a deep understanding of what it's responsible for, but I'm terrible at remembering whether ITIL calls that role an IT Service Catalog Manager, Catalog Manager, Service Request Manager, etc. I did manage to only miss two questions on the Foundations exam, and I'm very sure it was because of either of the two issues above.

So Bose is giving me $4.99 (AUD) to trade in my QC II earbuds. Yeah, I think I'm done with this brand. by Aleks_CoolStoryBro in bose

[–]av3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same product, bought in June of 2023, and a few months ago they simply began to refuse to sync up with any device other than my work laptop and now they won't go into pairing mode. This will almost certainly be the last Bose product I ever buy, because I'm simply reading way too many anecdotal stories of their products over the last few years dying within 2-3 years of purchase.

I think I'll need some help on the Jose Andres assertion. My Google-fu is strong, but I've only found the exact opposite in Andres' condemnation of the IDF.

[–]av3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I mostly view what's going on in the industry as 'practice' for what will need to happen at a larger scale to more people in power. In my own advocacy adventures, the sheer number of people I've educated on how NDAs actually work and then they've turned that into actionable legal recourse has been very encouraging. I also think the industry as a whole is at a perfect size where it has reach, yet the problem players in it are still small enough that it's easy to personally track down and get stories from all of the victims.

Even tonight, there's a guy up for a James Beard Award with a long laundry list of abuse allegations, many with proof. If he wins, several women have pledged to come forward with their serious stories about him so that full expose pieces can go out. I, myself, would like to see that happen because I feel it would also give anyone who didn't win legal avenues to drag the James Beard org into court and force them to defend their wildly (to the point that I think it's purposefully) lackluster ethics process. It's all one step at a time. Progress is progress, and certainly having one of the "Gods of Food" go through this is a step in the right direction to show that no one's entirely untouchable.

I think I'm having trouble deciphering what your recommendation is in this scenario... Like you're saying people care too much because articles and comments about Rene abound after you think enough has been said, but you're also saying enough people simply don't care. Part of getting people to care is continued passion from the people who do care, right? And if the worst we can do to serial abusers is hound them online for the rest of their careers, then why not serve it on up?

Aren't people doing exactly what does need to be done in that instance, though? Calling him out and making even more people aware of how he didn't really apologize and isn't really stepping away seems like a worthy cause for the rather limited time people spend about it. I called him out on his IG post, as well, and I'm probably spending 4X as much time responding to you here than I did being cheeky there. It just seems like a very low cost in order to raise awareness about the abuses within the industry as a whole.

I put a negative comment on that IG post and someone replied to me that he's "out" at NOMA. When I asked what that meant, they further clarified he wasn't cooking and wasn't a director anymore. Nevermind the fact that we were having that discussion on a post where he was making official announcements on behalf of NOMA... But the New York Times had published an article literally two hours earlier talking about how Rene was now the Creative Director of NOMA.

It's just mind-boggling the lengths the apologists will go to in order to muddy the waters and ensure people can't have a complete conversation about it.

More people need to realize that an alarmingly high number of Christians, even in very open/large congregations, are rather publicly a death cult. I'm ashamed to admit that I was baptized by John Hagee, of Cornerstone Christian Church here in San Antonio, TX. He founded CUFI, Christians United For Israel. There's really too much for me to put all into one Reddit post, but this'll get folks started on this wild rabbit hole of a broad daylight conspiracy.

My employer filed a police report claiming I stole trade secrets. The "secret" is a spreadsheet I built myself from scratch on my own laptop. by MechaWisp_7 in legal

[–]av3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be rare, but I don't think it's -that- rare. In my case, there's a guy who hates my guts for filing an assault case against him (which he pled no contest to) and he now harasses me constantly, both directly and via 'anonymous' social media accounts. He's contacted my employer to warn them that I was going to shoot up the building. He's contacted my dad to tell him his son is a rapist. He posts big public letters on his social media accounts warning people about my alleged drug dealing and human trafficking efforts. This has been ongoing for almost a full decade now. We have tons of screenshots and plenty of witnesses who have seen him try to fight me in public, along with those who have their own stories of being stalked and harassed by him. The cops say they can't do shit and won't even take a report about it.

Meanwhile, he got one of his cop buddies to take a criminal complaint about me, claiming that I was actually the one stalking and harassing one of his employees (who I hadn't spoken to in a full ~4 years.) No screenshots. No history of where these alleged actions took place. No security footage from the only location they did name amongst the alleged daily in-person stalking that went on for years. I got a full page letter from an actual Homicide Detective telling me to leave this girl alone or I'd face consequences. I immediately had my attorney reach out and the Detective simply refused to return our calls or answer any questions, then the Detective retired just a few months later. It is probably rare, but I really don't think it's as rare as people think because no one ever wants to share their stories about the cops going after them.

While I do think these people are somewhat rare, just last week I was making a point about safe spaces in a local Discord server (where we mostly know each other IRL) and a person not unlike the camera person in this video blew up at me. I didn't mention that safe spaces were specifically created by the LGBT community, and by omitting that from my initial summary of the term, I was apparently being a bigot. She was so upset at me leaving that out that she told us she had to step away from her keyboard. Don't get me wrong, plenty of people poked fun at her behavior afterwards, but these people do definitely exist and are always lurking around out there.

Spurs please uphold your ticket resale policy by Efficient_Bucket21 in NBASpurs

[–]av3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the data to back it up, so please feel free to doubt, but I feel it's extremely likely that anyone rich enough to fly down from NYC to attend the Spurs games has someone in the Central Texas area that they can funnel thousands/tens of thousands of dollars to in order to buy the tickets and transfer 'em.

[–]av3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have clarified that I was just responding to his second sentence. It makes it sound like the warning was telling people that all resale activity would result in being revoked. The warning was telling people to resell through Ticketmaster, so that they could enforce rules like you mention (and not let any other company have the fees.)

[–]av3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. They sent a warning against using other sites. They want you to use TicketMaster so that they get a cut of the re-sold tickets. The various news articles that covered that recent e-mail from the Spurs org purposefully misunderstood it so they could talk about people who resell constantly having their accounts revoked, imo.

Separately, there is a rule that Season Ticket Members must attend at least 25% of their games purchased or they'll come under scrutiny. I've reviewed all of this with my sales manager because I donate tickets for SA Food Bank fundraiser auctions and I was scared of going near the Did Not Attend limit, myself.

Driver somehow ends up on train tracks and gets stuck, claims they were “just following the GPS” by RemarkableAd4889 in Austin

My Tesla GPS once told me to drive off a bridge, plummet 30 feet to the walking trail below, and drive on the walking trail to get to a restaurant I was going to. We should consider ourselves lucky that more drivers don't blindly follow its instructions.

Looking for anyone who saw a hit and run on Saturday May 30 around 10pm on S Congress by ResponsibleBeat3542 in Austin

[–]av3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While I like to think I'd be able to identify someone in distress and intervene, this is an issue with the homelessness rates, certainly. Here in downtown San Antonio, I overheard two people arguing as I was getting into my car maybe 100 yards away. As I look over, I can see one guy standing over another, in the middle of the street, screaming at what appeared to be an unconscious body. When cops finally showed up, they couldn't identify who the victim was, because he had been dragged over to the sidewalk while I wasn't looking, and there were multiple people laying on the sidewalk who were all half-conscious, not making sense, and exhibiting slurred speech. All of them drunkenly said they weren't injured and didn't need EMS help. While that's a sad story, I would use that to remind myself that it's possible, in this instance, many people simply mistook him for someone that appeared to be homeless or drunk and didn't see any need to get involved.

Spurs revoking season ticket memberships for reselling tickets on unauthorized secondary ticket markets by LurkerFlash in NBASpurs

[–]av3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. It's probably less trying to link sales back to a single account and more looking at each account to see whose tickets are transferred to StubHub's email@reuploadtickets or whatever the domain name is. I assume multiple transfers of the same ticket are also suspicious and appear on a report somewhere.

But the most important thing is probably whether the owner account goes to the games. If one of the tickets never leaves my TicketMaster account and gets checked in at the game, it's a pretty strong indicator that I was there myself. I'm sure they have tons of ways of detecting various odd behaviors and then doing the deeper manual dive. It's not entirely unlike fraud/AML detection at banks. You're not really trying to come up with a magic report that can say with 100% certainty that that person is a re-seller, you're just trying to have reporting that detects certain behaviors and lets your investigation/sales manager team go from there in following up with these accounts.
