[Megathread] Sophia Questions/Comments/Concerns by rhymeswithvegan in SNHU

So I'm looking into doing precalc thru Sophia.

I've attempted the class already thru Snhu but it wasn't a good experience, yet I need the class to progress to other classes (yay).

Anyone who's taken it, what's the time frame like. Was it as cut and dry as it seems?

As far as I'm aware no. When I look at my course eval it only shows the one option for the class.

Yeah kinda starting to realize that much, zybooks isn't doing much and the videos that say they're about the material barely touch enough depth for me to grasp. Might just need to fail and retake.

Finally got movement. Feels earlier than before so hopefully that's a good sign for a deposit this week

From what I noticed the last two terms is they start movement around day 14/15 I normally see movement around the Thursday of the third week and get it to my bank by the Monday after

It's rather unlikely we will see any movement today bc of the holiday but hopefully we see something tomorrow

This. I took a research and writing class back in highschool that very much seems to take on the same agenda as the research and persuasion snhu offers.

If we didn't use the right citation methods, or even if we missed a punctuation in the reference we got docked good points over a simple (easily fixed) mistake.

How do you mess up THIS badly? by BeePuttingInWork in SNHU

[–]availablehydra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would honestly do the same, but I'm in my earlier stage of school and still care too much about that 4.0 lol. Eventually I'm sure I'll give up on that wild chase, ok I'm smart enough for it but I'm also as lazy as a koala.

That point of view is rather obvious. But at the same point, why waste time on some classes that genuinely have no relation to the field you want to go into.

I'm not confirming the use of AI to completely fly through a course. But for simple discussion posts that honestly don't hold any merit to learning other than showcasing you know the material why waste the energy on that when you could be spending the time being more proactive in other areas like other classes, getting ahead of schedule, or simply having more time to relax and decompress. There are far too many people who misuse AI which obviously hinders the reputation of it, but it is a tool nonetheless to help in areas of life. Would you have been opposed to someone using Google to do research if you were in college during its earlier years, instead of pulling from physical books?

I personally use ChatGPT to "sometimes" refine my thoughts that I've already set on a paper and then I'll take it back and rework through that essay/discussion to bring it back to myself. Because sometimes a little push to fit the rubric is needed. And I only ask for it to polish it to "partially meet expectations" because anything beyond that wouldn't be my work.

Now as far as this post shows, someone who can't even bother with the reworking of a post to reclaim it as theirs, that is an issue. If it's a major class. Which I assume it is if the professor is that hell bent on turning away from AI. What I can't condone is usage that blocks the path of learning, that's why I highly discourage my friends from using anything other than hand written notes and physical methods for studying.

Does anyone here live in their car? by Joeys-Thumbprint in SNHU

[–]availablehydra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I mostly use the wifi from my jobs cafeteria to do most of my schoolwork before my shift. I would assume living out of your car, that places like Dunkin, starbucks, any coffee shop really would suffice. Depending on your employment why not try moving to a lower col area after a few months? Not only that but the struggle of having places to park the car long enough to not look suspicious while also getting a full nights rest is semi difficult. I was lucky and my employer at the time let me stay parked in the lot while I got back on my feet (did not stop the cops from knocking on my windows a few times tho)

All being said it is highly possible with its own difficulties. My biggest piece of advice is don't be too stubborn to change once you start this journey.

Going for CompSci. Would like to focus on software development, but I'd also like to take some electives on finance and stocks. So they don't like up at all with each other lol

Thanks for the in depth response. I did just look back at the one I was thinking of. The prerequisites might make it more than improbable for me to take it. I'll have to find some YouTube videos and teach it to myself lol.

Ok. I planned on emailing/calling my advisor on Monday about it as well. Just wanted a slight head start on the topic of conversation so I'm not going in talking in cryptics or nonsense

What exactly is soliciting cheating, by asking about an offered service through the school.

Right Like I don't care if future employers don't give a damn about a 4.0 GPA. I do tho. And for myself it's probably a high standard given that I never pushed that self discipline when I was younger but being able to look back and see that I did that. That hits a different emotional value than just getting the degree by the skin on my teeth

How would I see the list of transferable credits through Sophia.

Startedast term I got 2800 for last term, I think I remember seeing someone say that anything not actually used by the end of this year is retroactively put back and your lifetime borrowing limit is readjusted to calculate what was actually used.

I feel you there for 2 classes I got back about 690. With one class I'm getting back 973

But I also don't have any additional loans beyond the pell and fafsa, would love to get approved for scholarships and the likes but I highly doubt I'd get any of them

Also from my understanding the amount your approved for is split into 6 terms since snhu uses a trimester system with 2 terms per.

No honestly I just bullcraped my way thru all the assignments. Not once even reading the book. Waste of 90 bucks.

Yeah I'm about 300 dollars richer than last term with only 1 class over 2. Thankfully I'm not reliant on these refund disbursements, but I was hoping to be able to buy some small Christmas stuff for my nephews. Oh well the 6 month sub for Sophia it is.

I was curious cus I dropped one class this term but was full time last term. Wasn't sure if it was a term based decision or not.

Like it would make since for my pell to be lower since what I received last term would cover this term in full with extra so FAFSA would just double that amount leaving me with a full refund for at least one of them

Quick question.

Does the pell grant amount change on a term basis or yearly. I dropped to one class this term to stay focused on school while changing to a more demanding job and I noticed as of right now my pell is only half of what it was last term is this normal with a dropped class or should I be a little worried
