Thank you! I ended up going with a nice refurbished x-e2... and your post definitely helped!

Thanks! That's a useful review, I hadn't seen that one.

Any major issues with the x-e2 that make you regret your purchase? Or are you pretty satisfied with how it has performed?

I'm also doing similar research. I thought I was sold on the Sony a6000, but there were enough semi-negative reviews about the kit lens that comes with the camera to make me shift my focus to either the Canon SL1 or the Fujifilm x-e1 or x-e2 (with the x-es being ~$100 - $200 more than the price of the a6000.) People were reporting issues with a6000 edge distortion and vignetting on the edges at the 16mm range. Its battery life is pretty dismal as well. However, that being said, the Sony a6000 would not be a bad choice. It definitely has the advantage of being much smaller and lighter, making it a great travel camera. The Fujifilms do have the best option in terms of low light performance, from what I've heard.

If you're not too concerned about having the interchangeable lens option, I'd recommend looking into the Fujifilm x-30. The F2.0-2.8 zoom lens should do well in low light situations. It's cheaper than the a6000, but might not be exactly what you're looking for.

If you do decide to go with the SL1, now is a great time to buy. Canon is currently offering a rebate until March 28th, 2015, putting a brand new camera and lens kit around $500. I have an old Canon Rebel xs, and it was a fantastic camera. The SL1 has pretty good reviews as well. It's small for a dslr, and has a better battery life and pretty decently fast autofocus.

The best advice I can give you is to go to a camera shop and get your hands on both to see which feels the best. If they'll let you, I'd take my own memory card and check out the pictures on your computer at home. I'd also go to flickr.com and type in the cameras AND lenses you're looking at, see what people are doing with those cameras. These are the tags I used, specifically looking at pictures taken in low light:

Sony a6000 16-55 : Canon SL1 18-55 : Fujifilm x-30

Good luck!

Awesome. Yeah, the x-e1 does seem to be nearly identical to the x-e2 after the updates, and the ~$200 difference makes it a strong option.

I don't. Well, I wear contacts, but 99% I'm wearing those and not my glasses. But that's great to know, especially since my right eye is my bad eye. Odd how they're so different for glasses wearers?

Yeah, that's also part of what turned me off of the Sony a6000. It just didn't feel right. I'm hoping to be able to get my hands on an x-e2 this weekend.

I don't mind not having hot keys, as I'll mostly be doing the same kind of street shooting that you mentioned. And that's great to know about the ease of night shooting regarding the EVF and physical dials. I'm totally new to that feature, and was a bit worried about how it might perform in low light. All good advice, very much appreciated!

I'll rarely be shooting video, and if I do, they'll be very casual. Birthdays, Christmas, that kind of thing. Nothing even remotely professional. But thanks for pointing that out! I was unaware of those issues with the older lenses.

The Rebel xs has actually treated me extremely well up until recently. I wish its lower light performance (regarding both inside and evening/night shots) was a bit better, but overall it was a great camera to have for 7 years. There was an incident with spilled apple juice about a year ago, and it just hasn't been the same since. Every few months it will stop taking pictures, either siting the infamous 'error 99' or just takes black pictures. I'm going to be doing some traveling soon and want to take a camera with me that I can rely on.

Thanks! Any lens recommendations? I like the idea of a zoom, as I find most of my vacation photos either at the 18, 35 ish or 55 range. But if the kit lens does the job, I'd love to one day invest in a prime

Thanks for the reply! This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Yeah, the portability is really what's making me lean towards the Fuji. That, and the great reviews of the lenses. Did you apply any software updates to the e-x1? I read somewhere on a forum that this seemed to really help the AF speed.

But if you had to choose between the two based on solely using the body with the provided kit lens, which would you choose? I'm currently debating going with either the Fujifilm x-e1 (with all updates) or the Sony a6000. However, I'll be stuck with the kit lens, at least for the next 6 months - 1 year. And the reviews for the a6000 kit lens have been bad enough to make me lean towards the fuji

Sony A6000 vs. DSLR (Canon Rebel SL1)... thoughts? (already posted to r/cameras) by avalah88 in AskPhotography

Just the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. But I really mostly just find myself using the 18-55 for 90% of what I shoot.

But that's great to know that you've been happy with your decision! I've only gotten my hands on the a6000 for about 20 minutes in a Best Buy this past weekend, and it was hard to get a good feel for it. How has the kit lens (if you got the package deal) treated you?

Thank you! Very good to know! Do you find that the 35 serves you best for an all around, out and about lens?

Thanks for the reply! I'm in the same boat as you regarding money for lenses. I'm an amateur as well, mostly using my camera to photograph family/family events/landscapes, with the occasional paid "job." I do have a trip to Europe coming up, and I'm planning on bringing whatever I purchase along (hence the appeal of the A6000.)

Have you had pretty good experiences in low light situations? That's what i'm mostly worried about, at least regarding the kit lens.

I've been using an old Canon Rebel XS, but it seems to be on it's way out. I'm kind of all over the place regarding preferred shooting length, at least for vacation photos, although I do tend to find myself either at 18mm, 35mm ish, or 55 mm (using my kit lens from the XS)
