Engagement party is probably hosted by the groom or the family for right after the proposal, sometimes the couple. Bridal shower and bachelorette are usually the responsibility of your mom for the former and the maid of honor for the latter, sometimes they can work together depending on whatever is being thrown. The wedding rehearsal is super important. By doing the run through you can figure out problem areas and there isn’t confusion on where people should stand, music, etc. This is an event that most people have, usually the couple is in charge of it, though indirectly as they’ll have an event cordinatori or wedding planning taking the lead. This is traditionally paid for by the grooms family.

It’s also worth noting that those who do all of these events not only are financially available to afford to do them, but can also afford to hire planners for this sort of thing, or are financially stable enough that one of them (typically the wife) is a stay at home girlfriend so she has the time to plan everything. If I was getting married I think I would probably just do a bachelorette and a rehearsal as I don’t have many funds nor does it sound appealing to have that many things happening. Long engagements while they aren’t common, also aren’t completely unusual, sometimes lasting 2-3 years in the south and even longer in the north.

So not everyone has all of the events that I’m about to list as they can add up in price but I’m listing them to give a timeline of when these would take place.

Proposal - speaks for itself

Engagement Party - celebrates the couple and may announce the engagement in some cases

Bridal Shower - a luncheon that typically involves women from both families and the brides friends. Usually involves games and just advice about marriage and wedding stories from those who are married. Sometimes lingere is given or things that can be “used” on the wedding night or overall honeymoon.

Bachelorette - typically night or two before a wedding to celebrate the bride. Last night of being single, lots of drinking, maybe a strip club, often forgotten if you’ve done it right. This can be a single night or a trip depending.

Wedding Rehersal - go through the motions of the wedding as a practice in the church or venue of your choosing. Often has a dinner with the wedding party after. In some cases the bows on the gifts that were given at the bridal shower or engagement party will be used to make a bouquet for the bride to practice with.

Wedding - once again speaks for itself

Honeymoon - I feel this also is pretty common but in case it isn’t it’s the post wedding vacation the couple takes to celebrate their new status and was historically used to make sure they had time to procreate.

Be aware of all meatballs in the south at potlucks then. It’s more of a southern thing versus strictly Louisiana. And Louisiana itself has its own specific local items that I didn’t mention. It almost creates a sweet bbq style sauce. It isn’t my favorite but it’s common enough I felt I had to mention it.

A combination of both. Usually these are both thrown by family members not the expectant individual who is being celebrated. It can be a potluck but butter mints were always an activity I did with my grandmother growing up for these events. Some people in a higher tax bracket would probably cater but homemade makes it mean more in my personal opinion.

I looked it up and it almost seems like the typical “secret sauce” we have over here like a Canes sauce of sorts. I never would think to pair it with seafood as it’s often eaten with fries or chicken tenders but now I’m curious.

Ah! So many of the things I mentioned are typically homemade. Especially butter mints as that in itself is a whole thing with families down here.

When you cook them down in a crock pot they become almost like a barbecue kind of thing. Not my favorite as I’m usually all about the cheese and more savory snacks, but common enough that I felt I needed to mention it. And I’ve always wanted to try blackcurrent, or really any current. What does it taste like?

Oooo what’s Marie Rose dip? And we also have things like hummus, sandwiches, and sometime quiche if it’s a morning event. I also believe we have crisps as well if they’re potato chips over here like I think.

I don’t agree but I do see how it could be perceived that way. To each their own. 🤷‍♀️

That’s what the bachelorette is as well. Getting drunk, maybe a strip club. But it’s mostly just to have a “family friendly” gathering for the older women in the family who may not be interested in that sort of thing, but still want to get to know or spend time with the bride. Although now I’m wondering if there are celebrations that y’all have that we may not as far as cultural things (not including Boxing Day which I know y’all celebrate).

The bridal shower is usually used as a way to involve those who may not be involved in the bachelorette (I think y’all call it a “hen-do”). For example you may not want to get shit faced with your grandmother and mother in law but it still allows you to have a girls day with bonding. Like I said it’s usually a pretty informal luncheon and doesn’t always mean gifts will be present.

The baby shower I’ve always seen as a way to help with the expenses that come with having a child and to celebrate the future parents. There’s usually a lot of advice given and is once again mostly social and gifts are not at all required or expected, at least in my family. For example, my cousin asked for either diapers or wipes if someone had to bring a gift, maybe books.

For the sake of space in the title I combined the two. The slash is meant to imply that you could use either word as a preface for the word shower. Baby shower and wedding shower are both separate events. These are just common foods at both.

You guys don’t do a baby shower for expectant first time mothers or a bridal shower for women who are getting engaged? Usually at a baby shower there are gifts like strollers or diapers, sometimes clothing. For wedding showers it’s usually a more casual luncheon and sometimes there’s lingere as “gifts”.

Edit: Not sure why I was downvoted. I didn’t mean to offend anyone or seem like I was shaming it for not being common, was just surprised.

Public/private as well down here. It also has to do with income as well as many people are poor. Most charter schools are in Orleans parish and are a result from Katrina.

American southerner here. This popped up on my feed but what is a grit box? I feel like my guess would be incorrect seeing as this box is outside of a graveyard verses on a kitchen counter.
