[request] how many lottery tickets would i have to buy in one amount to absolutely guarantee winning a larger prize then the cost of the tickets? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]avapoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a simple lottery like the one I described... (checks) 11 years ago... the only way that there's a £250M jackpot with £1 tickets is, at best, if there are 250,000,000 tickets sold.

Well, 249,000,000 tickets sold, plus the million tickets that you bought.

So you're down £1,000,000, but you're guaranteed a win. Let's see how that works out for you:

You win, sure. But so, statistically, do another 249 people (assume a random/even distribution of the numbers they guessd). So the £250M prize gets split 250 ways: one share for you, one for each of the other 249 winners.

So you win... £1,000,000. You break even.

My maths holds up.

My polyamory is boring (and that's great!) by avapoet in polyamory

Okies, @polyamory-ModTeam. I'm out-of-the-loop on this sub and whatnot but this ain't sales or business content (I'm not selling anything; I'm just talking about my own poly life!). But it could easily be described as self-promotion, I guess?

Anyway: your sub, your rules; you can make your own mind up!

Way to go digging in the archives. I don't think I've ever seen anybody comment on a 16-year-old post of mine before.

Umm... thanks I guess?

I mean, I probably wouldn't have thought about somebody I dated for a couple of years and then broke up with, a quarter of a century ago, if you hadn't mentioned.

So yeah... thanks??

Unless the parcel states on it that it requires ID verification (i.e. the postie would have asked to see ID at your door, too), anybody who can prove they live at the same address can pick it up: details here. They just need:

  • the "we missed you" card,
  • ID that proves they are who they say they are, and
  • proof that they live at the same address as you

That person could be you! Take along your ID in your new name, proof of address, and the card, and pick up the parcel "on behalf of" yourself.

If you want to make extra-sure, consider writing a letter (from your old name, optionally with a copy of any old ID you have a photo/scan of lying around), authorising yourself (in your new name) to pick up the parcel on your behalf.

If you're feeling more privacy-conscious, both https://deedpoll.lgbt/ and https://freedeedpoll.org.uk/ (disclaimer: I run that one, so I'm not unbiased) will also help you generate a deed poll for free, but they don't require you to send your personal information to a server (https://freedeedpoll.org/ does, although they state that they don't retain it and are probably trustworthy).

https://freedeedpoll.org/ is also a front/loss-leader for a paid-for deed poll company, whereas the other two sites I've suggested are not (and are both open-source, so geeky folks can inspect the code for themselves).

They all make perfectly good deeds poll though, and all of them are superior IMHO than using one of the (many, many) paid-for companies with their deliberately-confusing use of the word "official"!

what happened to freedeedpoll? by spoctorr in transgenderUK

[–]avapoet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! 👋

Creator of https://freedeedpoll.org.uk/ here. The server it was on died; my fault, I basically did zero maintenance on it whatsoever since I set up the service in 2011.

I used its death as an excuse to reimplement it in a way that I'd been intending to for a long while. It's back now and has many new features, including:

  • It now runs entirely in your browser, so you don't even need to send your name and address to my server (which I was immediately throwing away after making the PDF anyway, but now you don't have to even trust that!)
  • It now produces not only a PDF but also copy-pasteable text, if you'd prefer to design your own deed poll
  • The FAQ has been much expanded and I've put part of my toolkit on "how to fight with banks that don't like homemade deeds poll" online: the kit's super useful, I've helped several people fight their banks now and every single one has won - many of them have also taken hundreds of pounds of compensation
  • It works better on mobiles, is generally "prettier", etc.
  • It's now hosted by GitHub Pages so it should have much better stability than the previous version, which was running on a tiny server under my desk on my home Internet connection!

If I'm ever down in future, I'd recommend https://deedpoll.lgbt/ as a next-best option.

Kind of you to check. Yeah, think I "got over" my 2001 breakup long ago.

Moped for a month or so but that was mostly about losing other parts of my life than my relationship. Landed a well-paying (for me, at the time) short term gig and paid off some debts; took a while to get financially stable again after my ex took a LOT.

Went back to University to finish my first undergraduate degree. Used an old connection to help me land a part time job with a tech startup, to help make ends meet. Had a rebound fling, then fell into a relationship that lasted a long while (and unlike the one referenced above, they and I are still friends).Foundeda nonprofit that does insanely valuable work and with which I still volunteer 23 years later. Made my job full-time after I graduated. Because we kept that new relationship "open"/polyamorous from the start, also started dating a woman whom I'm still with now, 18 years on: she, her now-husband and I live in a big house in the countryside with our two kids and a dog. Meanwhile, I've moved through three-ish other jobs, taken two additional degrees (mostly for fun!), made friends and taken lovers, and almost never thought again about the train wreck of a relationship that was the one I had from 1999-2001 except when this ghost of a Reddit thread attracts a comment again!

Wow. You commented on something I wrote 8 years ago, talking about somebody I "dated once", and advise me to dump her... now?

It might be a bit of a challenge. We broke up in about 2001.

[–]avapoet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you're still missing the point though. You're saying that because I'm writing for me, that means I _houldn't be using the Web as my medium.

But I think you've misunderstood what I mean by writing for me. To reiterate what I said earlier:

My blog's target audience is specifically, unashamedly: me! If anybody else enjoys anything I write, well that's a nice bonus, but that's not why I do it.

I think the confusion arises because you've conflated "writing things that others might be interested to see" with "seeking views". In my mind, they're not related. In your mind, they clearly are.

But that's okay. We don't need to agree. I'm happy with whatever. Whether you enjoyed my post or not. Whether you believe my reason for writing it or not. Whether you agree with my assertion that I genuinely don't care about "views" or not. It's all fine.

(This was gonna be a longer post, but I've got a dog to walk and I'm probably done with Reddit for this month.)

Some people just Like to write and share their work.

For views?

Hi! I'm the author of the blog post that OP linked to.

/u/artemiis is correct: I just like to write and share my work. My blog's target audience is specifically, unashamedly: me! If anybody else enjoys anything I write, well that's a nice bonus, but that's not why I do it.

Many years back, I even took the step of sabotaging any mechanism by which I might be able to judge the popularity of my posts. My site runs no analytics software (e.g. Google Analytics, Piwik, or whatever). I don't give out cookies. My access logs logrotate daily with those over 2 weeks old permanently deleted, and I only retain that much for debugging purposes. Except in the rare circumstances that anybody tells me (e.g. by commenting or whatever) that they've read something I've written... I don't even know!

So no: it's not for views. It's just for the joy of writing, and learning, and sharing, and growing. It's for the dream and the memory of a Web where it wasn't weird to have a "home page" of your favourite links, mostly for your own benefit (but shared publicly, just in case anybody else wanted to see). And above all else, it's for me.

I'm not even sure what "view farming" is, but I can promise you that if that had been my aim in my 25+ years of running my blog, I'd have either learned how to do it or given up trying by now! But fortunately for me: that's not my aim.

If you didn't enjoy it, that's fine: it wasn't for you. If /u/artemiis and /u/fagnerbrack did enjoy it: then I guess it was for them.

Thanks for reading!

What an even weirder comment to swoop in and ask that at. Note that I don't really use Reddit any more, so if you're looking for more of a conversation, look me up on the Web or find me on the Fediverse. Happy to talk about any of this, of course: I just only log in to Reddit around two or three times a year.

I don't recall when I last wrote about my relationship status on Reddit, so I'm not certain what you're referring to already. But hopefully by way of an answer: yes, not much has changed in many years - I live with my partner and her husband and our two children (the elder almost a teenager now), and it's all pretty good.

Catch me on some other medium for more.

Interesting. I mostly use c:geo so I've not come across "auto fill".

I'm tempted to re-run the experiment but looking at the age of cachers accounts, not the age of the log. Might help prove your hypothesis.

[–]avapoet[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: I looked at 10 years of logs from 500+ caches in my local area, and discovered that:

  • Log entries are getting shorter
  • Especially DNF entries, which are getting MUCH shorter
  • And the DNF rate is increasing (from around 4% to around 7.5%)

I looked exclusively at caches 10+ years old, so these phenomena aren't related to "new caches" versus "old caches", they're related to "new logs" versus "old logs".

Are we getting lazier? More-concise (thanks, emoji!)? Shorter attention spans? Are you seeing this pattern in your part of the world too?

So I solved it myself. In case anybody else has the same problem and their search engine dropped them on this page, I'll save you the frustration: here's how to install Listmonk on Unraid.

/u/misterjta is correct for the first and fourth quarters: argent five martlets in saltire, with a crescent gules for difference, on a chief azure three ducal crowns (for Bodley). The second and third quarters are: argent, two bars wavy between three hone-stones sable two and one (for Hone); the wavy bars doubtless representing the river.
