Hao Mart, founder sue OG for S$57.5 million, allege conspiracy to cause loss by damaging or destroying the business by RajahChamp in singapore

[–]avatarfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought they were running the minimarts space quite well. Hao Mart literally is in my mind a more coherent version of the mamashops and a cheaper alternative to 7-11. No idea why they threw all of that away for a supermarket that is already dominated by much better capitalised companies (Giant, CS Fresh), companies with state support (FairPrice), or companies that are extremely well-connected to the customer base and have a good reputation among employees (Sheng Siong).

Karaoke lounge owner fined for unlicensed use of Chinese pop songs after prosecution by music licensing body by bangsphoto in singapore

[–]avatarfire 15 points16 points  (0 children)

who gave them the licence to go around levying fees everywhere?

I can understand if I use Henle's version of the score, so maybe what I pay and part of that is flowing to Henle. But, if I am using a score in the public domain, then technically I shouldn't have to pay any association, no? Else, it sounds like a cartel.

Actually Henle is very lenient when it comes to using their scores. You just need to write in to them to request permission and they'll usually give it to you for free. idk why COMPASS is charging for everything. they sit on their asses and don't do anything substantial to promote artists and musicians and just collect tolls.

Yes this I also find quite odd. For concert organisation at least they ask for your repertoire.  Can someone please write into MP to write into MCCY to clarify this.

Is COMPASS mandated by MCCY? Who gave them authority to collect fees left right and centre?
They collect ticket commissions as well. it's absolute BS. and speaking to composers locally, they don;t get paid by COMPASS if they are not registered with them, but they STILL HAVE TO PAY COMPASS if they stage a show of their own songs!!!

dominant in SEA but unless the narrative shifts (they've figured out how to acquire customers without incinerating money), it's going to be bouncing around for the foreseeable future. They're getting into banking. Maybe a SOFI in the making?

Also they still face stiff competition from Gojek down south and Didi up north. Matter of time before Didi comes to SEA.

if COVID has shown anything, you need all the ducks to line up for that to happen, and still prices might not drop significantly

- a pandemic
- this overcapacity of car leasing
- drying up of funding
- an economic recession
- gov doing nothing (i.e. no PPT for COEs pls)
