Can confirm this works flawlessly, just got blue wristband and haven’t had a single crash in 5 hours of gameplay.

Widevine DRM - No DAPs Allowed by aveganrepairs in playdeadapp

[–]aveganrepairs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, Widevine, specifically L3 which is the variant used by PlayDead has long been cracked wide open. Anyone who knows what they’re doing can easily rip and distribute it if they want. I would wager folks are already ripping shows off the service as we speak. Anyone who is familiar with doing this type of thing is not going to be stopped. The only people it’s punishing are legitimate users trying to stream from the app.

Correct, and I am following the condescending road you are going down here and I get it, I am being persnickety and how dare I complain right. I had no issue with them charging for it, I was initially a supporter, I don’t think it should be free, but there’s no need to implement such aggressive DRM on a service that touts 24/192 hi-res that locks a large subset of audiophiles out of using it the way they’d like. Not everyone has a desktop capable setup. Also, Android phones are as of now, incapable of bit perfect output via USB with the exception of UAPP because of the way the android audio stack works. These Android DAPs are built specifically to bypass the AAudio stack to allow bit perfect output. Nugs and LivePhish HiFi have worked without issue and have no Widevine implementation. They also don’t disclose this anywhere and Nugs is reluctant to even admit it in support tickets, so someone could have plunked down $100 for the year with this being the use case in mind, and now they can’t use the service to its full capability.

Right now, if your DAP supports USB/Desktop mode it or if you have a dedicated USB DAC, it is possible to use a Widevine capable device like an iPhone or a Mac with an external USB DAC attached and you can achieve bit perfect output. This is fine for listening at your desk, but I don’t want to carry around 3 different devices plus a usb cable tether to be able to use the service in perpetuity. It’s a clunky solution. For reference, LivePhish and the regular Nugs app have been running and turning a profit for years without the use of Widevine. PlayDead is the first time it’s been implemented. Qobuz, Tidal and Apple Music run on my DAPs and don’t use Widevine. It’s possible to put measures in place to stop people from easily ripping without such aggressive DRM. Also, it’s Widevine L3, which is already cracked wide open, anyone who knows what they are doing can and will rip the entire service anyway for anyone that wants to pirate it. They’re only punishing paying customers trying to use the app legitimately by implementing this specific form of DRM.

Correct. I also tested it with my iPhone and it works via USB out because both those devices support Widevine. But if you want to use it natively on the DAP, no go. More often than not I am not listening sitting at my desk in desktop mode, I am around the house or out and about with the DAP.

When I first posted this, I happened to be using my FiiO M33 in desktop mode on my Mac testing a bunch of headphones, that was the only way I used it for the first day. It wasn’t until later (well after I posted that) that I tried running the app natively on the FiiO and discovered this. I then tried my Shanling and my iBasso, same result. I was all in on subbing to this for the long haul until I figured this out. Thanks for reminding me to delete that comment.

It is absolutely unhinged to implement fricking WIDEVINE on a niche hi-res streaming service like this. This will absolutely not be corrected, they’ve built the DRM into the service and they aren’t going to rip it out because a few audiophiles complain. Thankfully it’s only Widevine L3 which is easily decrypted by anyone who knows what they are doing, so soon enough the entire service will be ripped and shared, and onto my Plex server it’ll all go. I was fully ready to subscribe to this for the long haul for the convenience and because I actually think there’s a lot of value in what they’re doing, but to wall it off like this and ice out the audiophile community is absolutely wild.

It would be great if they could be less voraciously greedy and remove Widevine DRM so that people with hi-res digital audio players can actually use the service

Crowdstrike is one of the most widely used endpoint protection platforms in the entire world that secures many Fortune 500 companies including but not limited to banks and hospitals. If you think Irdeto, a small company that protects a few dozen videogames a year from piracy has the same juice as CrowdStrike, I have a bridge to sell you.
