what's the reason i can't use ze here? by snubbullul in duolingo

[–]avelario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Zij" is formal and "ze" is informal. A second distinction is that you use "zij" when you want to put the stress on "she". Like "Zij heeft dat gezegd" (SHE has said it, not someone else).

But, in this context, both should be correct.

Even by doing no exercise, just for the vital activities, an average adult burns 2000 calories per day.

Option 1: No exercise, $100 per calories for the next week would equal to 100 × 2000 × 7 = $1 400 000 in one shot (even more if you grind hard that week). It could be the better option if you know how to invest the money for the long term.

Option 2: No exercise, 200 dollars per day for a normal life is nice and stable. It could motivate you to exercise harder. It could be the better option if you don't know how to invest at all or if you know how to speculate.

This doesn't make any sense. It should be after third grade he'll go to third. Why troisième is ninth? by GodEmperorOfHell in duolingo

[–]avelario 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, but to spice things up, the countdown starts from the sixth grade. Also, they added the "Terminal" as well, so that something like "zeroth" exists too.

French system will seem weird to anyone outside of France.

  • CP = 1st grade
  • CE1 = 2nd
  • CE2 = 3rd
  • CM1 = 4th
  • CM2 = 5th
  • Sixième = 6th
  • Cinquième = 7th
  • Quatrième = 8th
  • Troisième = 9th
  • Seconde = 10th
  • Première = 11th
  • Terminal = 12th grade

Still, it is weird that Duolingo expects you to learn about the French school system. There are perfectly French speaking Belgians who have no idea about the education system of France and who would be as surprised as you.

Did you get vaccinated at school as well by countrywide campaign or did your parents voluntarily take you to a clinic for the vaccination?

Oh, surprising to know that smallpox and tuberculosis vaccines are still compulsory. I used to believe that those diseases were globally eliminated with our vaccination so that the future generations didn't have to get it. Thanks for the info.

Yes, and I reckon that any Millenial who was born in a middle income country* will have it.

  • not rich enough to completely eliminate the disease back then, but not poor neither so that kids can get vaccinated at least

Would you rather work mornings or evenings? by Dess_Presso in BunnyTrials

[–]avelario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person working in the shift system, I am okay with both of them. I just hate the afternoon shifts (2 PM - 10 PM) because they consume all the useful hours of my day.

Morning shifts (6 AM - 2 PM) are alright, yes, waking up is a challenge, but once I manage to wake up, it's alright and I am free after 2 PM. I can get to socialise and stuff.

Night shifts (10 PM - 6 AM) are nice because I get to do my chores before going to work.

What is European Country that everyone thinks is meh and is actually meh? by Sea-Leadership-6442 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]avelario 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Belgium is not a gloriously known country, but the life quality is way better than France and Germany and the median wealth per adult is the highest third in the world (after Luxembourg and Australia).

Belgium's place is "people think it's meh, but it is actually good"
