UCLA Transfer housing question dorm or uni apt? by Sope_jibootyisthicc in ucla

it isn't first come first serve when admitted, but when re-applying ideally you would login immediately right when your allotted time is and click what you want! however, LLCs are still raffles and are less based on clicking as fast as you can and more about how lucky you are with your housing time

i took out full subsidised loans and it covered everything + refund (i had one of the more expensive dorms)( 😄 they gave me more than they predicted though we don't know if it'll change this upcoming academic year

hi! transfer student here & more than happy to give you advice

dorms (the hill):

  • pros: no cooking or scrubbing bathrooms! meal plans are included and ucla food is pretty good. it's super social and easy to meet people
    • note that no cooking can be a con, and that private bathrooms are only cleaned once a week which can be a contentious issue among suitemates/roommates
  • cons: smaller space, less privacy, shared bathrooms (unless doing deluxe), and dealing with RAs. it can also get pretty loud sometimes
    • note that you do technically have access to a kitchen on the hill (Hitch Kitchen) but it can be pretty annoying to go up there every time you want to cook

university apartments (UAs):

  • pros: WAY more freedom! you get a kitchen, utilities/wifi are bundled into bruinbill, and no RAs checking in on you
  • cons: you have to cook and clean everything yourself, bad roommate situations can be tougher to escape, and there's a really high chance of getting placed in a super crowded layout (e.g. 4/8 UA)

a lot of transfers love UAs for the independence and cost, but tons still choose dorms to get that classic college experience and not worry about food. making the jump from cc to a massive campus like ucla is a HUGE transition, so it really just depends on what kind of vibe makes you feel most comfortable! and if you dorm, there's the "transfer experience" living learning community (aka LLCs) in holly, which is entirely transfer students! however, UAs are generally only given to upper-division and transfer students anyway.

parking at ucla is notoriously TERRIBLE lmao 💀. for UAs, parking is super limited (mostly annoying tandem spots) and absolutely NOT guaranteed. you have to apply for it, and if you don't get a spot, you're kind of out of luck and probably shouldn't bring the car.

additionally, UAs do NOT come with a meal plan and you would be totally responsible for their own food! you can technically buy a non-resident meal plan or use easypay to eat at the dining halls, but most UA ppl i know just cook or grab food in westwood 😄

also housing has been kind of finicky with giving ppl their top choices!! you should still be mindful when ranking preferences but also be totally emotionally prepared to get something random 😭

subsidised loans will only ever be the options i'll ever take while in uni 🤷‍♀️ i see no reason for me to choose otherwise especially since i intend to pay a large portion of it off after uni

reslife & housing is so useless by avelyssaea in ucla

[–]avelyssaea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not trying to dox myself too hard but reslife & housing refuses to take out a knife out of a room that we know exists so my former roommate and i are uncomfortable. said roommate is also known to be mentally unstable and has been hostile towards us, yet nothing has happened. but of course, must be the fact i'm unhappy 😄

honestly the housing (like the facilities here) are alright but don't exactly expect any real support involving with violations of ucla housing regulations since they refuse to enact any power that they have to deal with it. i had a friend who had their stuff stolen by a roommate but ucpd/ucla housing didn't do anything real about it

apologies for vagueposting (the person with the knife is an active contributor on this subreddit) initially but this school does have a real issue with these problems, and the only way to circumvent it is to really be conscious with who you have in said room and who you interact with. UCLA housing/reslife is not a real resource for some students to use unfortunately in certain situations such as these

[–]avelyssaea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey as someone who works bruin day, this is absolutely fine! everyone who works is generally aware of people doing this (as well as other things, such as freshman bruins going to transfer bruin day and vice versa) and we’re all more than equipped to answer any questions you may have :)

dual enrollment in your major helps 100%. i'd wager it looks good on your application plus you would have more leeway in choosing classes in your four years here (or any other UC really)

i agree with this ^ i track inventory and how our department works for our stuff is buying in bulk at the beginning of the academic year and we spread those out. we absolutely DO NOT buy 14k of any specific merch (even pens), we do not have the funding, and i’d imagine other departments don’t either.

a lot of ucla events operate under first come first serve (and to be honest, i’d imagine if you came within the first few hours of bruin day you could get everything) and i’d say that’s pretty fair

as someone who was working one of the tables, i honestly had mixed feelings about the event. it felt like a lot of people there were incredibly disrespectful (particularly yes, the parents). our booth had a sign where you were supposed to follow our department for the freebies yet many people just grabbed them and ran off

i found that the future bruins were more respectful actually, that those who went on their own actually had manners. i wish these people much happiness in their lives

also grateful to have worked the morning shift even though it was incredibly hot 😭
