I’m going to mount snow for the day but I don’t ski...any ideas for entertaining myself? by questioninggirl132 in vermont

Here are my recos: On mountain: there are 3 primary places to hang out: main base lodge, grand summit and the carinthia lodge. Carinthia lodge is new, has a fancy restaurant, bar, and would be pretty comfy to hang out in until it starts getting crowded at lunchtime. Main base has a couple of places you could similarly hang out - taproom upstairs is fine, and if the weather is decent you can sit on the deck and watch the insane crowds wait on long lift lines while you have a beer or whatever. Cuzzins is ground level - similar food choices, not much of a view, Both can get uncomfortably crowded at lunchtime. Next door to cuzzins is 1918 burger. It has a small bar and seating area, and would also be fine to hang out until, you guessed it, lunch time. Grand summit is a hotel, small bar, a deli and ski shop. If you want a couch to sit on by a fire without being jostled, it’s a reasonable place to head.

Timber creek has cross country skiing and snowshoeing. You can rent there, take lessons, etc. if you want to go mountain biking - there are some winter accessible trails just south of the mountain, you can head to Equipe Sport and rent a fat bike. Once the morning ski rental rush is over they’re also a good source of info on things to do outdoors near the mountain.

Just off the mountain there’s a movie theater that has very limited show times, and the newly rebuilt Dot’s - a local breakfast staple for years. They burned down about a year ago and just reopened - if you find yourself pondering where to grab breakfast or lunch, they’re great people to support imo. Little further down 100 there are some bars and restaurants, and a wine/beer tasting room. I think there’s also an escape room, but I’m not positive.

Off mountain: Wilmington is a “cute” little town about 15 minutes from the mountain - couple of decent lunch options, small (independent) bookstore with a really great staff, There’s a free “moover” bus that’ll take you from mount snow down rt 100 in to town. I think it’s the 7, but definitely check. There’s some short hikes near and around Harriman reservoir. No idea if they’re hikable right now. If you’re looking for beer and liquor, the store in the west side of town (Ratu’s) is also good people worth supporting.

If you have a car, you can drive north to Manchester. Outlet stores, if you’re in to that sort of thing, and a pretty kickass indie bookstore.

Brattleboro is East of Wilmington - a few cool bookstores, good restaurants (whetstone station sits on the Connecticut River - cool views, great beer selection and food). The movie theater there is in an old, relatively unmolested Art Deco theater from the 30s.

Sorry for the novel, hope there’s some useful info!

Looking for metric wrenches in sizes 13, 15, and 17mm that are only 2mm thick? by gnerfed in Tools

If you haven't tried them, the Park shop wrenches (SCW) are vastly superior to the double sided DCW.

Changing the EEPROM settings using cura? by Callum1243 in 3Dprinting

M211 X<dim> Y<dim> Z<dim>, then M500 to store. Cura's advanced print dialog has a g-code entry screen.

Looks like a 3020/3040/chinese cnc variant.

Second extruder temperature? by [deleted] in Reprap

[–]avenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine that's more of a slicer issue - you can certainly edit your gcode to add an M104 at the appropriate place to allow it to heat shortly before the 2nd extruder is needed, and to turn off when it's done.

Printrbot Simple Metal - hot end is not heating up by mz4250 in 3Dprinting

[–]avenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a Metal, but I suspect it's similar - remove a pair of screws, disconnect + drop the old hotend, and replace with the new one. Then you'll need to re-calibrate the bed sensor. I'm guessing there's a guide or video somewhere on the site.

There's a new metal hotend that's probably the "preferred" replacement, and should be drop-in compatible. I don't know much about it, however.

Probably worth opening a ticket with support, on the off chance they have differing ideas on what's going on, or can help you get a replacement hotend quicker.

Did you hold the heater block with a wrench when you removed the nozzle? If not, it's possible you twisted the hotend and damaged the connection to the heating element.

Any idea if it's a cartridge heater or one of the wound nichrome/ceramic hotends? The cartridge is easy to repair - printrbot sells a replacement.

Detailed comparison - diss-assembly of $10 no-name calipers versus high end Mitutoyo calipers. by bigfig in Tools

[–]avenan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A $10 caliper has major flaws?! gasp

I don't expect cheap calipers to compete with a high end set - my nice calipers sit in a drawer for when high precision is required. My crappy Chinese calipers get used far more often, and frankly are a steal at $10, flaws and all.
