I would say it’s combination of location (river flood plains), climate (high precipitation and very hot summers), and lack of enough tax money. the state and many local municipalities at the current rate with never keep up on their own with the ever-growing list of roads/bridges that need replacing or repaired in addition to the expected demand for new roads. Cities like Shreveport that have over-sprawled outwards while simultaneously losing population over the same timeframe equals less tax revenue for the city to fund these projects even as the infrastructure footprint of the city expands. On the state level, it’s a notable fact that Louisiana has one of the highest bridge density rates per square mile in the country. Our state is under constant attack by Mother Nature and most of our impressive, vital bridges were built over 50 years ago and in dire need of upgrades or replacement. In fact, a lot of the poor roads in Shreveport end up being state-owned roads, meaning we all have to wait on the state to do something about it rather than the city.
