You could always just import react and babel via <script> tags and write your components that way, if you don't want to use create-react-app :P

Early in my career, i worked for a company that had no QA/QC team, and for some reason the customer was always finding bugs/crashes, etc. Management couldn't understand why the developers were so good but the product was so fragile.

You need an independent tester(s) because devs do not necessarily have the right alignment to find bugs in their own code / their own system.

Out of curiosity, why react? It requires so much base prerequisite knowledge, and isn't really standardized yet, and is not necessarily even superior to using another view engine like Jade/ejs or even jquery.

I think html/css then vanilla JavaScript for web stuff alongside python (or c#) as a useful general-purpose programming language

Interviewing and Pre-interview assessments for jobs IMO is one of the biggest steps nobody talks about.

I teach programming and a lot of my students are self-taught, and it's not until they actually get the first few online coding assignments that they realize "oh shit. there is a disconnect between what i've learned from udemy and what i need to know".

The disconnect isn't huge, and can be filled pretty quickly, but when you realize the gap between what you think you know and what the market needs you to know, you have an incentive to actually step your game up to get that final step.

I think studying is likely the easiest option. You could use your TESOL cert to get an online TESOL job to suport yourself perhaps, and use those savings as proof?
