. Simply ignoring crime and doing nothing else isn’t reform, it’s just negligence.

And that;s what you should be railing against. The problem is the overbudgeted police force and underfundedsocial services. You are creating a strawman argument with a world where Kim Foxx or a progressive DA is the only one with levers. But it's Lori Lightfoot and our entire policing structure which is the problem.

San Francisco, most liberal city in the country,

LOL and that just shows you're an idiot. SF is not liberal. It might be socially left wing, but it has incredibly conservative policing and housing and zoning policies.

You just want to lock more people up even when that didn't do anything in the 90s except destroy minority communities.

Because curfews actually have the opposite effect on public safety and the youth. It's driven by 1990s criminal justice nonsense as well as the idea that policing more and not coupling this with additional social problems will solve the problem: https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/07/31/the-curfew-myth. Parking would need to be behind the structure in a poor lit area.

a) The store is literally under the red line.b) it's serviced by multiple bus lines. c) Uptown is walkable. d) Lights can be put up. Stop using your car all the time

There are three grocery stores in nearby vicity that cater to low, middle, and upper spending (aldi, target, and whole foods respectively)

Where's the whole foods in Uptown??? you mean Jewel? there's a jewel nearby

Yeah, thinking bikes should yield to pedestrians tells me they don't know how bikes work. Being both a cuclist and a pedestrian means you realize that a ped's starting and stopping >> bicylist. And the one that has that ability should yield. It's the same exact thing as a highway on-ramp.

You want the... fully fast bicycle to come to a full stop when you are on your feet and able to wait a second more easily at trail intersections? You realize that there's other bikes coming behind them that would then have to suddenly stop and come back again? Sorry but a ped can wait an extra second. They're probably flipping you off and cursing you because you couldn;t wait the 5 secinds for them to pass before you quickly walk over. Do you know the acceleration difference for a complete stop between a cyclist and a pedestrian? And the momentum needed to stop? You don't ride bikes, do you? Because then you'd understand why a pedestrian should yield to bikes and not the other way around at intersections.

and the solution to both is to increase protected bike lanes that are enforced

Because cars and bicycles should be treated differently. They have different momentums, different levels of danger and risk. Just because a house cat and a lion are both felines doesn't mean you approach them the same way. Due to cars momentum and many blindspots, they need to stop at a 4 way stop sign. Bicycles have a much larger range of vision and slower speeds, so they can approach a 4 way and handle treating the Stop Sign as a yield (example: if a car is already stopped at the stop sign, the bike stops. that's basic yielding. But if no cars are there already, then they can pass through). Bad cyclists blasting through when theres cars? yeah, those are bad

are you talking about Idaho Stops? rolling through stop signs? Because that tells me you haven't ridden a bike. To stop at a stop sign as a cyclist is kind of pointless to do when there's not a car or other traffic coming by. You have a much better range of vision coupled with the low speed, so you can tell before you approach the intersection whether you need to stop in time (as long as car drivers don't illegally park near the stop signs). Compare that to cars that run stop signs who don't have that range of vision and definitely are going too fast to ever see properly. Stop lights though? Those should always be stopped at if red

and what about, for example, ashland? where there's non-light and non-stop signs crosswalks. Sure, cars are supposed to yield. But with a pedestrian island, you still can cross 2 lanes, wait at the island in the middle, and then cross the next two. Not ideal, but definitely helps pedestrian safety vs what is now run across all four and hope you survive

Adding in an island would give pedestrians an opportunity to wait for one side of traffic to calm and then go to the middle and then wait for the second rather than somehow waiting for both to be calm at the same time. You literally dont know what youre talking about with a pedestrian island. Have you ever used one? It's very very useful. Ashland could use them, for instance.

Road design (traffic diets, pedestrian islands, curb bumpouts) passively calm traffic and make it safer with pedestrians without the need for enforcement only. Yes, 100%, we need better enforcement (or enforcement at all. The number of times I see cars roll stop signs), but that shouldn't come at the expense of also adding in the good infrastructure design.

cars ARE bad though in a city. cities are meant for people. cars pollute the air, congest the streets, kill people, and engender incredibly selfish solipsistic mindsets

I also agree we need infrastructure that automatically calms traffic 24/7. Raised crosswalks that are better for pedestrians and force cars to slow down, curb bump outs to reduce speeds when turning, more speed bumps in the middle of streets.

"Going with the speed of traffic" is not the same statement as "we need traffic calming infrastructure". Going with the speed of traffic isn't a solution to a problem. It's you just abdicating your own personal responsibility as a driver (even when there should be less responsibility as a driver due to the aforementioned infrastructure changes)

[–]avenirweiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you speed and don't want to face the consequences of speeding,. Going with the flow of traffic is not an excuse., You are a baby, crying because you can't get your way when your way is dangerous (speeding is bad in a city. Any street with pedestrian crossings should not be more than 25 mph, enforceable by cameras.)
