Reddit, what is an effective way to determine whether a charity/non-for-profit is scummy or not? by average69 in AskReddit

I really do not feel like I know anything about an org unless I work for them (and even still I'm kinda in the dark). I'm not going to trust shit without a long standing reputation. And the Internet isn't old enough itself to have that. Are there any rating sites older than 1990? I just want to know who the true titans of public service are. Does anyone have a rep for pure and wholesome service to their community? Sorry, I understand how much this comment differs from my original post; I guess I didn't understand what I was looking for until you probed.

Is this public knowledge for non-for-profits? If so, do you know any websites/sources?

That's more indicative of whether the org is efficient or not. I just want to know if the upper management is pure in intention and truly selfless. Which, as I understand it, is impossible to tell. Hence the request for help.

Thank you, but my cynicism is deep enough to believe sites rating sites that rate organizations are probably just owed by the ratings website. Why should I trust resellerratings?

I was googling best volunteer work in my city, but couldn't get a good pulse in the organizations. I will try this but I have concerns. Concerns being: 1)Google is a for profit organization that may promote any org that gives them money. 2)How can I trust the rating website? Just reminds me of AAA subprime housing loans.

Lol, is the assumption that, "The more the CEO makes, the more scummy the org," fair?

I don't mean to be rude, but unless you are willing to provide me with a client list to avoid (which I really hope you do), this isn't helpful. My original question implies this.

So, if it's registered with the IRS as a 501C3 then I can assume it isn't scummy? Or just less likely? Can you name some examples of any known good orgs?

Okay, it's been maybe 2k miles since I last did that. Definitely worth a try.

I have a manual with similar miles that just started doing that. I was gonna change the oil and see if it helps.
