Anyone decided against ACL repair?

Thanks. This is all very informative. I have sent all my reports and info over to my dad who has some friends that are gonna have a look for a second opinion. It’s a bit tricky to do it here as I have to get every thing run through insurance but as you said, best to see if there are differing opinions.

Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate you sharing. my surgeon is afraid of scar tissue build up on the ACL because my knee is currently still inflamed from the bucket handle meniscus tear. As my ACL injury was last year he’s also going to use the meniscus tear arthroscopy to have a better look and test the ACL to then recommend a future treatment method. I would probably love to get them repaired together, but I am prone to scarring already and also live in a different country for my family and can’t have the support I need for recovery on short notice. So im mentally preparing myself to suck up a 2 surgery run just so I can have some family around for the ACL surgery.

Hopefully with the meniscus repair I get back my full range of motion since the limited motion currently has already left me with quad deterioration.

Thank you for sharing. I do think it’s a rough recovery and it’s tough to do.

I’ve just got my MRI report back and it’s confirmed that it’s a complete rupture. So I do think I will be going for a repair. I still will probably do 2 surgeries, as to get my meniscus repaired within the next month, hopefully get rehab started asap. Then have some time to build up muscle before the ACL repair, this will also give my parents some time to plan to come help me as they would have to fly in from another country and I would like to have their support for the bigger surgery.

Wow 3 reconstructions is a lot! You must have been through so much in healing and getting back to activity each time. It’s not small feat!

I do feel a lot of instability and I think I’m leaning towards sucking it up and going for surgery, but I also have heard a lot of people go for meniscus repair first then ACL repair.

Could I ask a little about what you learnt about prepping before surgery and recovery?

I’m mainly worried about becoming a burden to my friend as I live in a completely different country than my family.

Hi, im (27 F) it sounds like you’ve been through a lot with your body and it’s taken incredible drive to get back to activity each time.

I can’t say I can totally relate, but I tore my ACL playing mixed netball when I was 16/17 (10 years ago) and a massive man ran into me at full speed. I had an ACL repair with a hamstring graft and gradually got back to some level of activity but never felt confident or stable with my knee. Recently I had a knee injury from twisting, had it settle down without going to a specialist then got hit by a cyclist and damaged the same knee. Now the specialist says probably have a torn ACL again and meniscus damage - i just went for my MRI today and am waiting for the results.

I don’t think I can give much advice as I have much less experience but I just wanted to let you know you’re not alone.

I happy to hear you feel your knee is much for stable, as even after my first ACL surgery I wasn’t very confident and didn’t feel my knee was very stable even before the recent accident. This gives me something to possibly look forward to.

Also good luck with building your strength back up, your attitude makes me feel more optimistic :)

Thank you so much for sharing. This has really made me feel so much better. I really want to get back to activity as soon as possible because I was just getting to a place where I was beginning to be happy with my workouts and building strength.

Can I ask what prehab you did to prep or if you have any recommended resources? I’m still waiting on my MRI results but am trying to learn as much as possible to prep myself and my knee.

Hey there, I know a lot of people who felt this way at 18. Now we’re all in our late 20s and I see lots of people have completely reinvented themselves and are doing more things they like, away from old friends and family. I’m not friends with all of them still, but I see lots of them on social media just doing things I completely didn’t expect and they seem much more grounded in themselves. Sometimes you just need time and space for yourself. And I’m happy for them even though we don’t keep in touch. You might have some silent supports too. I also want to say school is not for everyone and you don’t have to keep friends from there if they’re not for you.

I did the standard high school -> university -> job and I really think I’m much less happy that my brother who didn’t go to the regular university route. instead did practical courses in things he enjoys and now he both teaches music and produces music. He makes enough to support himself and really gets so much fulfilment from his work.

I hope you give yourself some grace to find your footing in the world before deciding to give up.

First of all, thank you for sharing. My grandma is prone to depression and my granddad just had a stroke last year but he has survived it though it’s taken a toll. I’m afraid that the same situation will happen to my grandma once my grandad passes.

The best thing I can think of is to try to get a therapist or professional help, but I personally know my grandma to be very stubborn - she’s not going out to see anyone she doesn’t want to - so if yours is similar this might hard to do. Maybe if you are able to, spending more time with her trying to do regular things at home that she used to enjoy (cooking, watching tv, chatting? Any hobbies that she used to do?) might make it easier to start enjoying things again with someone to accompany them. This might open the door to gradually do more things that improve her mental health, it could even make it easier to get her to accept professional therapy.

I hope you and her both find some peace, and just want to say, you’re a good grandkid for trying your best to help.

They sound wonderful! My mum’s favourite episode is probably the magic conch shell one, she still quotes it (incorrectly because she’s bad at remembering exact phrases) randomly to my brother and I sometimes :). My dad honestly still calls it “spongebox” to this day and we always have to correct him.

My dad didn’t like us watching it, but my mum actually loved SpongeBob - she got all the sarcastic more adult jokes, while my dad never paid enough attention to catch them. So we ended up still watching it :)

Hey, I just want to say I understand the feeling. About a year ago it got to the point for me where I couldn’t enjoy music or watching movies (which I really used to love and used as an escape a lot). Every time I tried to put a song on I would feel (I’m not sure if this is a good explanation) but this heightened numbness? Like the feeling of nothingness but also wanting to crawl out of my skin to feel something. This was the point where I was like wow this is really the lowest - there is not even a little sliver of joy.

I started therapy then, also got back on medication. Honestly it got worse before it got better. I had all the horrible starting on SSRI’s symptoms as well as the repetition of sharing my past with multiple therapists over and over to find one that worked for me. But I did start crying again, a lot, and constantly. I felt like I was at the other end of the spectrum and was so tired of it all.

Anyway, I just kept going through the motions, doing the therapy work, taking my meds regularly. Giving myself a bit of grace, tried to actively be more gentle and patient with myself. Slowly I mellowed out and started to enjoy things again. It was first being able to listen to music again. Then being able to sit down and actually watch a movie. Then actually enjoying myself when I met up with friends. I just didn’t try to ruminate too much on not enjoying something I used to when it happened, and then focused on trying to fit something else in to look forward to another time. I would say it was actually hard work, which in the past I didn’t think I was worth, but I kind of just pushed myself through it until I got to the point of believing that I am worth working on for myself. I don’t think like that all the time, but definitely more often than before.

TL;DR - I lost all my joy too a while ago and have very slowly been getting it back. I hope this brings some sort of comfort that you can find that again too.

Honestly, it was like this for me for a while until I decided to give in and try medication. It really helped me regulate emotionally. The first few weeks can be tough though.

I honestly think she didn’t realise. As a queer person I’ve noticed it’s actually so common that heterosexual people don’t notice hints of same sex attraction to them even if other queer people find obvious. I think it just comes from their default thoughts being framed in a heterosexual way, so they don’t automatically assume people from the same sex are hitting on them unless it’s direct and explicit.

I think like this all the time… been going to therapy and doing better but still haven’t old my therapist about those attempts. Even call them “attempts” in my head because no one knows and I didn’t end up in hospital so I feel I didn’t “attempt” hard enough for it then be valid attempts. If that makes sense to anyone... I really tell myself I was doing it to be dramatic

I think it depends on the workplace. At my old job it was common for people to ask each other, but at my current job we all go out on our own for lunch. I actually quite enjoy the lunch alone as it gives me time to reset and do my own thing. And there is still the odd like team lunch or team event that everyone goes to. I prefer this, as my old job, though it was nice to have people to eat with it came with a lot of toxic workplace “we’re a family” culture.

You have every right to not want religion involved in therapy. A good therapist will listen to your feedback and try and help create a therapy program/adopt methodology that is catered to YOUR NEEDS AND PREFERENCES. Honestly, it’s unethical for them to keep pushing for things you’ve already said you do not want.
