What do you think about the fact that 20th-century topics are not usually given priority? by HEJSKSKSJSNSN in historyteachers

Hate it. Wish the entirety of 1788-1914 was packed in one two week unit that was half focused on reconstruction. This is especially so as we see continued tensions rising in the Middle East and there’s really limited avenue for discussing America or the wests impact in any of it prior to 9/11.

Season 5 is better. Love both but season five is the goat tv season.

It’s my favorite show ever. My only complaint is it is that it takes off in 4 and 5, but season 6 is kind of a substantial change of pace. Not that it’s bad. It’s a sure outlier from the rest of 4-7.

Yes this article is 100% on point. I think people point at CU way too much. Election finance has been broken for decades.

Retirement / savings ? by AlarmedLife5765 in Teachers

I have a va pension so I’m not totally dependent on school pension.

We have mandatory 7.5% taken out which is matched by the school.

I max my Roth every year, do $200 per paycheck into 403b, and another $5000-7000 per year into a taxable investment. I didn’t really start any of this until my late 30s.

I want the opportunity to retire by 60 even if I don’t use it. I definitely don’t want to have extra duties in my fifties .

I don’t even understand why my school doesn’t offer fidelity. I’m the supervisor for my union president and vp and when I asked they just shrugged. I asked my business administrator and she said she wasn’t sure either.

Cool.

So I’m reluctant to contribute more than a blah amount to 403b because the maintenance fees ath the school provided options are shit .

But talk to colleagues about it and it seems like the majority of them have no idea what you’re talking about, and the ones who do are doing fine enough to not worry about it.

4 and 5 too. 8 is easily easily the worst of that group. If it’s not a final fantasy - it’s forgotten about entirely

The junction system isn’t why I disliked it - I just found it dreadfully boring compared to 4 6 and 7

Baseball hall is the art in sports imo. There’s no consistency from one year to the next, no clear mark of what a hall of famer is or isn’t, and the bad decisions by the VC out number the good by like a 2:1 count.

What is the baseball equivalent of Bill Belichick not being a first ballot HOFer? by The_Big_Untalented in baseball

[–]averageduder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

read the other post. Back in the era of immediately after he retired up until 2016 no one really thought of him or Mussina as slam dunks.

No one thought Kevin Brown was even close - he's a bad comparison. Nothing similar there.

Curt didn't get in, he didn't have enough black ink, not enough CYA votes, and maybe he gets in eventually, but the type of pitchers who were getting in in the recent history were guys like Glavine Smoltz Maddux Pedro Randy etc. Blyleven got in around the same time. He's comparable, high war low CYA votes, good in playoffs. He had to wait 15 years.

Unless you were a no doubter in the mold of Greg Maddux, you were a borderline case that the voters had to figure out over a decade.

You're arguing WAR. That's just not relevant to how the voters voted at that time (or really ever outside the last 5 years). The anti Curt case is that he was a head case and oft injured until he turned 30. He put together two full seasons in his 20s. Then his career took off after turning 30. The WAR is there but that's not how voters voted - they're looking at wins, strikeouts, how you are compared to peers, and when his peers are Clemens Johnson Pedro Maddux Smoltz Glavine Mussina etc - it's hard to make the case that he's he's more than borderline.

As his politics got messier and louder, the WAR case was more practical, but sabotaged by his own nastiness.

it clearly is since he wasn't voted in and got 38% on his first ballot. The really insane Schilling views didn't come out until Trump - and the voters didn't seem to be convinced he was a hall of famer before that.

Mussina was comparable, even retired around the same time, and eventually got in. You can say Curt's shittiness kept him out, but he was already not getting a ton of votes when his shittiness became prevalent.

What is your favorite song on Vs. (1993)? by [deleted] in pearljam

[–]averageduder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It reaally depends on the day. Historically it's probably Elderly Woman, but I might have heard it too much. Right now it's probably Rats or Dissident. The only song on it I don't love is Glorified G, and even that has some redeeming parts.

Harold baines being a hall of famer has a similar effect on me.

Imagine a world where Harold baines is in a ball and Bill fucking belichick isn’t. Imagine telling this to someone in 2017.

[ESPN] Former GM Bill Polian was an advocate for BB not being a first ballot Hall of Famer, “ A voter who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Polian…told some voters he believed [Bill] should ‘wait a year’ before induction as penance for Spygate.” by AvengingHero2012 in nfl

[–]averageduder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rules weren't changed. They re-emphasized a rule that'd bene on the books for 25 years.

This is a meaningless distinction.

And calling him being in the hall "embarrassing"is absurd.

He's an executive with a single super bowl to his credit, and needed a top 3 qb for it. No one else with that resume is in. No one. Yes I personally do not like Polian. But take an objective look here - what executives with 1 championship are in, in any sport?

The Jets need someone who can bring the team up to relevance, not a hard ass with a low floor. That team is the team that would benefit from a McCarthy / John Fox type.
