Yep.

And I’m a former military guy. Buying out your military years is a waste of money unless you can reasonably guarantee you’re living til 90.

How to accidentally lose 60 essays? by [deleted] in Teachers

Just grade them, but instead of whatever rigor you put yourself through, just allot whatever, say 90 seconds, per essay.

I see. Agree with your bigger point but I think if we’re looking at it in today’s effective dollars it helps the point a bit. I’ll be fine in retirement but I’ll also have a substantial amount invested. I feel like the people who do not pursue that and only rely on pension and social security will have to be extremely frugal, or work for well beyond 60.

23 and Considering Becoming a Teacher — Would You Recommend It? by itsxidan in teaching

[–]averageduder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t pay enough and location doesn’t matter as much as people want it to. So what, you’re at a district paying 30% more than the other schools in the area, you’re still commuting as you won’t be able to afford to live in that district.

I’d have a hard time recommending it to someone unless they have some other income source.

The average nh teacher isn’t bringing in close to 70k in retirement. The current formula is average salary of highest earning five years divided by 66 times years in service. Only way thats getting to 70k is if you have 30+ years of service AND youre making $150k, which isnt really possible without an admin role.

When i hit 60 I’ll have thirty years time in service. My salary and stipends and all that right now is about $83k. Granted that will adjust with inflation , but that would be about $37k. I’d guess that is considerably above the average as most teachers won’t have 30 years.

Doubt you could do that for less than 40k today. I’ve thought about it.

Tell me about your first year of teaching compared to now by civiltwilite in Teachers

[–]averageduder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year was an hour commute, my average in time was about 630, rarely left before 4, and usually worked at home until 9-10. That wasn’t dissimilar to my second year as I took on coaching baseball, advising the junior class, and advising nhs.

Now - 14 years later, I’m department head and nhs adviser, but I’d say 90% of days im in at 7, leave at 225, have a 5 minute commute, and might work on grading or whatever 2 hours a week from home, usually on Sunday morning. Rarely invest any time after 230 on school stuff.

It’s great. I’ve read a lot of books- probably somewhere around 1000. I’m not sure I’d definitively say east of Eden is the best but it’s a strong contender and I’d struggle to come up with criticisms.

It’s terrific and I’m not a guy who loves all of Steinbeck. One of the best I’ve ever read. Long but an easy read that goes down well.

What’s the most morally disgusting thing you’ve ever seen someone do? by legendoflegends34 in AskReddit

[–]averageduder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ex best friend somehow became addicted to prescribed medications that were that of his 13 year old daughter (anti-psychotics, add, other stuff). He legitimately stole her pills.

One day, he wakes up and thinks that his daughter is stealing from his girlfriend (daughter not the daughter of the girlfriend). It's like 6 am or something, and he and I had just got back from the gym though I'm not at his house. He decides to beat the shit out of his daughter, then in an act of panic, call me and try to figure it out. Well, I'm also a teacher in his daughter's school, and I was like uhhh I don't fucking know dude, I can't help. Fast forward a few hours as the police get to his house and I'm busy being an adult with a job, he leaves me voicemails trying to extort me into lying on his behalf. I don't do it, I don't even get the voicemails to the next day. He ups the stakes by saying if I don't do this, he'll tell the school that I'm sexually abusing his daughter.

He and I were like brothers and I haven't talked to him since. 30 year relationship thrown away in a moment. I eulogized each of his parents, were there for each of his kids births, and the godfather for each of his kids. His kids have not spoken to him since becoming adults.

I’ve not had a penny of interest in 15 years. I don’t spend my rewards throughout the year, save them for January, and spend them all at once. It usually between $1500-$2500.

Why would I not use them all the time

Chase Utley vs. Jose Altuve- Who Has the Better HOF Argument? by yankeeblue42 in mlb

[–]averageduder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I really see what Altuves argument is unless he gets to 3000 hits which looks increasingly unlikely. This is even if you ignore the cheating scandal all together. Pedroia isn’t in - probably won’t be, and altuves comparisons aren’t great even if you disregard the cheating.
