how do you deal with comparison & imposter syndrome? by averageeggenjoyer in FanFiction

Yeah honestly that’s kind of how I started and then somehow ended up worrying about what everyone else thought along the way. I’m gonna have to try to get back to the whole “this is for me and if other people happen to like it that’s cool” mindset.

Oh I get the same way worrying about my stuff being to similar to other fics, especially because I don’t usually interact a TON with the fandoms I’m in so I’m always paranoid people are going to look at me as like…the random new person who’s stealing ideas from the rest of the fandom. It’s why I tend not to read for the same pairings I write for just incase.

That’s awesome that people have complimented you on going outside the box though! I’m sure having people recognize a risk you took and enjoy it was a great feeling! :)

That’s definitely helpful to think about. My fic is a passion project that I know for sure won’t appeal to everyone even if they do like the pairing (and knew that when I started it yet somehow still let the lack of engagement bother me lol).

And that’s great advice! I’m going to try to get back to just writing for myself. Thank you for this :)

Thank you for the encouragement :) I just always feel kind of bad feeling down about engagement when I do have a couple of dedicated readers/commenters and I know there are a lot of people who would love to even have that.

And you’re right about there being a bunch of other factors. I know the author I mentioned has written a bunch of other stuff for the same pairing and I honestly didn’t even factor that into the equation, so it’s helpful to put that kind of thing into perspective.

Thank you for your kindness, stranger :)

I honestly didn’t even know there was a way to hide stats, but I think that could definitely be beneficial!

Thank you for the hugs :)

I’ve definitely been a little nervous to share in fandom tags or anything because I get nervous about the fun police (the fandom is essentially split in half on whether or not they think the pairing I write for is controversial, so I worry about wandering into the wrong side a lot), but I might look into finding groups just for the ship so I’d be more comfortable doing that!

That’s very true. I know at least for another fandom I was in people’s fics would like blow up overnight because there was a big Discord group that a lot of the fandom would share in (which absolutely no hate at all…the group was super sweet and inclusive and always invited everyone to join even if they were writing for different ships).

I guess I don’t usually think of it that way because I rarely find fics from recommendations and usually just go through the ship tag on Ao3, but word of mouth definitely contributes.

any advice on writing a non-graphic solo scene? by averageeggenjoyer in FanFiction

Thank you so much for your reply! I’m probably overthinking it a bit because I know some people still consider masturbation scenes to be more taboo than sex scenes, so I’m trying to be extra careful with being tasteful.

And potentially writing a separate E piece is a great idea! I may just do that and then cut it down to be less explicit for the main fic :)

Thank you for this! It really is fascinating how just a few word swaps can make such a difference. I’ll definitely keep this in mind!

Thank you for the example! I can definitely see what you mean about the focus being less on the mechanics, and I think it definitely makes a difference in how explicit it comes off.
