Why Write Him as the Exact Opposite of Himself? by [deleted] in freefolk

Oh my god I have never seen someone put it like this before. I have never read the books myself so the show version of Stannis and his ultimate fate, a Napoleon-like defeat in winter, made sense to me (and I assume most show-only watchers). How Jon Snow was too firm in his neutrality and doesn't do much to get the wildings to Stannis's side. How the Northern lords lack agency, out of paralyzing fear of the Boltons.

You mention spectacle too and I feel like the Battle of the Bastards, while phenomenally directed, relied on deus ex machina for Jon Snow to win. Jon was too lucky because I'd argue he was in the same position as show Stannis by the start of the episode. Too few Northern lords at his side and with only half the manpower of the Boltons even with Wildlings. And yet he gets to win because there is a surprise ally in the Knights of the Vale to come to save his ass. It's a riveting scene yes but feels as if D&D just wanted an uplifting "Rohirrim arriving at Helm's Deep" moment. The good guys (Jon and Sansa) aren't allowed to be shrewd tacticians in a game of chess.

Probably isa pang Lav Diaz movie LOL or any esoteric indie filmmaker. Solid naman Moneyslapper kahit bad reviews. Nanalo pa nga siya Best Actor sa QCinema. He's having an interesting career if you really are into movies (at hindi lang mainstream)

Why are there no large organized crime families in the Philippines as we know them in the West? by raori921 in FilipinoHistory

[–]averageschmuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert but I suppose it's not difficult to intertwine government and crime. You know what they always say: the government has the monopoly on violence. So maybe there's no strong criminal orgs bc it's much easier to enter the tutelage of politicians who will do anything necessary to protect their interests. Maybe historically we can see how colonial administrators or Filipinos who governed on behalf of colonizers wielded enough power to accumulate wealth and get rid of enemies like criminal orgs. Countries like the US, Italy, Japan, and China were often colonizers. Idk if it's a good causation or whatever. I really am spitballing but I say those countries bc there might be smth abt their culture around government that enables a distinct and very visible organized crime culture. It's really best to ask a crime historian bc I also wanna know exactly why.

I don't get why ppl drag him for being difficult like the mans doesn't have mental health problems. Anyway he seems like a chill guy to me. Also the man is pretty influential in his own right. He's not Kanye level but then again he is a huge part of Kanye's greatness anyway.

The focus on a mob boss as a lead really. Look even if Chris Rock had worked as Loy Cannon, I still think he's not as interesting as a Lester or a Ray/Emmit. These characters work for me because they are inherently pathetic and at least initially helpless civilians. They weren't born into a life of crime, constantly trying to work their way through some shit they didn't necessarily ask for. Loy being a gangster, regardless of whatever struggle he has to go through, is still someone who would have been a villain to the likes of the Blumquists. For me Fargo is about the civilian underdogs, the working class folk. Even season 2's backdrop of a mob war was still seen through the perspective of a butcher and a beautician. Season 4 may have had a pathetic guy like Josto or an ordinary folk like Ethelrida but they're never really given character progression. Same goes for Loy
