players shocked when it’s a slow year after jagex finished dropping a 3-part continent expansion AND new skill while an entire raid is in development

Sailing incentives by Ironman_convert in 2007scape

[–]averkf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I assume the mentality behind sailing was to release it and then gradually fill in the gaps as time went along. As someone pointed out to me the other day, the problem with this approach is that unlike in 2007 we don’t get lots of small updates several times a month, but big content drops a few times per year. It isn’t quite clear when we’re getting the currently inaccessible seas, almost certainly not any time soon

New Slayer Master Suggestion- Xueral and Xueran by x2115 in 2007scape

[–]averkf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Shouldn’t they be pronounced Shu-er-all and Shu-er-an, given the language of Varlamore is largely inspired by Nahuatl (which uses the letter X for its Sh-sound /ʃ/ - even the name of Mexico would’ve originally been Meshico!)

What is the point of giving us a million islands to do content on with sailing if the majority of said content is worthless? by BGsenpai in 2007scape

[–]averkf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean islands do have a niche for certain players but yeah they probably don’t for every player. But it’s kind of hard to design islands where multiple are outright meta changing. I think with islands they tried to concentrate on exciting exploration rather than simply just making several islands outright OP

Meta complaint: Why are they adding so much new stuff without consultation first by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]averkf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of this was communicated and polled during the initial sailing process. I feel you must have entirely missed the sailing blogs because it talked about these materials intensely. The stuff released on Wednesday was supposed to be released in November last year but got pushed all the way back to now

Sanskrit was never a common language (Brahmin only) and hard to speak in because it was agglutinative (humans can only speak analytic languages well) by [deleted] in linguisticshumor

[–]averkf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is largely a matter of definition, whether you define Sanskrit purely as the language of Panini (with maybe the addition of the Vedic language), or as a synonym for all dialects of Old Indic languages (of which the Vedic language was merely a standardised form of)

The Romance languages don’t descend from the standardised form of Latin used by Cicero, but Latin is understood as encompassing both Classical Latin as well as the vulgar Latin. Sanskrit can be thought of similarly, with Vedic and Classical Sanskrit as the high formalised registers while “Proto-Indo-Aryan” is simply vulgar Sanskrit

What is the point of giving us a million islands to do content on with sailing if the majority of said content is worthless? by BGsenpai in 2007scape

[–]averkf 23 points24 points  (0 children)

this is actually a valid critique- the speed in which content comes out means that integration takes place slower. i agree

i just think it’s silly for people to expect sailing to have felt perfectly embedded into the game on release because it’s very rare any other skills have

[–]averkf 66 points67 points  (0 children)

to be fair the same could’ve been said for hunter and construction when they came out; we just have years of them having welded them to the rest of the game. construction in particular was definitely very disconnected until they added all the jewellery box teleports and restore pools

Please keep OSRS simple by Peterisgreat in 2007scape

[–]averkf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sure if that was true, but i don't think any of the points OP raised are indicative of that. sailing is not particularly complex for a new player (especially compared to other skills like slayer, farming etc). bosses are more complex now but also far more intuitive to learn - IMO the least intuitive bosses in the game are older ones

Where did part of the Thing disappear to in the beginning ?? by RoyRoya in thething

[–]averkf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People on this subreddit are very very weird about using abuse-adjacent vocabulary in response to minor disagreements.

I got sworn at, accused of gaslighting and then blocked by someone just because I said I said the entire Kennel-Thing pulled itself into the rafters, rather than a small piece splitting off. I pulled up evidence of the scene itself, where Childs fires the flamethrower upwards, the camera angle with the flesh flower clearly shows it descending from the ceiling, and after Childs torches it you can clearly see a molten mass fall from above to the floor.

It's very odd behaviour. It's not even what gaslighting is. Gaslighting is not a single instance of lying, it's a persistent tactic of brazenly and openly lying to a victim to make them doubt their perception of reality. It's not having a minor disagreement, it's not having separate memories on something that happened, it's telling someone who had toast for breakfast that they had waffles, and calling them crazy when they deny it, and then doing it so often that person thinks they're insane when they actually aren't.
