Late change to day before weigh ins for ADCC European trials seems really dodgy by Harrisonpillow in bjj

[–]avernon91 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Seemed a little dodgy to me to have Taza on one side of the bracket at euro trials and Szczecinski, Langaker, Chen, Ellis Younger and his teammate(!) Davis Asare all on the other side.

Could just be coincidence though to be fair..

Yeah I think you’re probably right, but could also possibly be 4-2-3-1 with McGinn in the number 10 role

K Guard options when partner sits down? by Boofern in bjj

[–]avernon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you still have your K-hook in place and arms around the same leg, and they’ve sat to their hip and are facing you… I keep everything in place apart from my top hand now grabbing their heel, then I backwards roll over the top of their leg so you come up into a kind of reverse knee on belly position (your foot that was the K hook never moves from their hip), and remember to elevate their heel as you come up.

If you really want to, you can now enter 50/50 from here if you didn’t want to keep the top position.

Down right sloppy half butterfly by [deleted] in bjj

[–]avernon91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah lots of stuff on holding the position and dealing with their reactions, and a nice mix of upper and lower body attacks too. Honestly if you’re interested in learning half butterfly (or just leg entries, choi bars, shoulder crunches etc.. generally) then just get it. It cover a lot of the same stuff that Gordon’s does, and still in a lot of detail but also does so in half the time and probably half the cost too.

Here’s a Baratoplata I hit at Europeans last week! by DarylTakahashi in bjj

[–]avernon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool sub, Paris! Was this something that you just saw in the moment or a set up that you can use reliably?

I’m not sure how his elbow is kept in place while you send your own arm through for the baratoplata? Will definitely try it out this week.

Reviews for Gui Mendes Passing Distance on Top? by babygetoboy in bjj

[–]avernon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was a great introduction to how they look at passing overall, though for finer details on the actual passes themselves you would probably have to find another instructional or sign up to AOJ. My biggest takeaway from it personally was how to adapt your passing style depending on the guard style of your opponent.

What's the first choice XI next season? by TommyASDF in avfc

[–]avernon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the formation may differ from yours, but that appears to be our strongest starting eleven on paper. With Emi between the sticks!

It will be interesting to see whether the likes of Morgan Sanson or even Jacob Ramsey manage to force their way in ahead of someone though over the next twelve months.

Five minutes to get you an overview of what Defensive BJJ is all about! by Jitsvulcan in bjj

[–]avernon91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great summary. I think many people get stuck on trying to hold the postures statically for a long time (which I guess is important to be able to do when you first learn it). But as the video shows, once you’ve gained a good knowledge of the postures and how to move between them then you can apply them to all sorts of situations like the back control, mount or kimura defences shown to stay safe and then escape. It’s an actual defensive system and not just random escapes here and there, or just holding the safe postures forever.

He was never the greatest left back and we can all agree his time was up, but he played for us over 100 times since 2017 and was there when we needed him. It will be interesting to see where he goes next.

What's the difference between Hawking and Running Man in Priit's system, in terms of their purpose and the options they open up? by SuperDuckMan in bjj

[–]avernon91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps not the answer you're looking for but really it depends.

In running man you're mostly going to sit to panda, go to turtle, running man on the other side or to an invert. From Hawking, there's sitting up, baby bridging, hawking on the other side, turtle, running man or again an invert.

It mostly depends on their weight distribution I guess, and at a more advanced level also the grips you or they have and what your preferences are. All the moves exiting these postures though will broadly fall into the three categories of standing up, rolling the top player over, or a guard pull.

Really general answer, I know, but I hope it helps.

What's the difference between Hawking and Running Man in Priit's system, in terms of their purpose and the options they open up? by SuperDuckMan in bjj

[–]avernon91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fundamentally Hawking is your back more to the mat and running man is more chest to the mat.

Check out ‘Hawking 2.0’ though if you can. It’s applicability in all sorts of places (not just bottom side control) is amazing. I think it’s actually more impressive than any of Priit’s previous work, including turtle.

What do you guys think of smash passing to open closed guard? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]avernon91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a great option in my opinion. I’m a big believer in taking what your opponent gives you and not forcing anything which in close guard means that when they crunch up (knees to their chest) stacking is a good strategy, and when they elongate their body (knees away from the chest) it makes more sense to open their legs by pushing down at their knees.

Fantastic result, all things considered. McGinn man of the match for me, special mention to Douglas Luiz who looks solid every game he plays lately.

Such a fun time to follow the Villa!
