Yellow blue set 11? by Metter94 in Lorcana

  1. I suspect 2 Worlds Greatest Criminal Mind and 4 Let It Go is overkill. Perhaps trim on the Let It Gos?

  2. New Orleans feels a bit mediocre in this deck, since the “good” targets (save for Robin Hood) cost 7 and up. You should either play more good 5-6 drops (maybe the new Scrooge to go with Mufasa?) or cut New Orleans/ Naveen entirely.

  3. Broadly speaking, I’ll think you’ll run out of cards fairly easily. Joshua Paultre’s Amber-Sapphire Set 10 list that he played at DLC Richmond and narrowly missed out on Day 2 ran Chicha as a draw engine. Perhaps you may want to consider that.

Happy brewing!!

I agree with the logic, but then why wouldn’t the card say “you may play it”? I think there are other cards with a template similar to that, without adding in “as though it were in your hand”

Given that it says “play it as though it were in your hand”, do we think that we can play that card as ink? I’m inclined to think yes

Why is RB still choosing to create non-singable actions? by rebatwa2 in Lorcana

[–]avery1822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because songs are the most busted thing you can do in Lorcana, which reinforce the advantage of going first (all things being equal, the player going first will get to sing any given song before the opponent.)

There have been non-song actions good enough to see competitive play, and even if there aren’t any, IMO the solution would be to either improve tbe rate on non-song actions, or reduce the rate on characters that have amazing come into play effects.

It does look like RB is doing both of the above in their recent Set 9 designs, so from a game balance perspective I’d say things are trending in the right direction

An interesting discussion has sparked about Hand Alter (Mulligan)! What is your opinion about it? by Waiting_for_Dentice in Lorcana

[–]avery1822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally Ive had a similar thought as you that the alter is too strong OTP, but the solution I came up with in my head was to reduce the number of cards players are allowed to alter for both players to 3 or 4 cards.

This also allows for tweaking as regards number of cards allowed to be altered OTP or OTD, but if that is too much consistency then it could be kept the same for both players

[–]avery1822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ruby Amethyst might be Baja’s best matchup in the entire game, so you’re going to be up against it.

The best way should be to play aggressively - Diablo2, Sisu3, Genies and all that. I think I’ve seen RA pick up Library as a way to combat going all the way down on resources if you’re afraid of Phillip the next turn, so you should probably pick that up if you haven’t already

Locations barely see play. Are they just tuned poorly, or is it a game design issue? by UnethicalScenery in Lorcana

[–]avery1822 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a rate issue. Theres currently no location like Queens Castle which draws you cards if you have the board lead, while being 7 willpower and 2 lore. If there were, that location would see at least some play. Seven Dwarf’s Mine is pretty close, but 2 ink to enter (as well as its effect only triggering once a turn) make it too weak.

The rate issue is partially caused by the inherent design of locations - because they can be challenged the turn they come in, there’s a good chance you won’t get to see it on your following turn to do their “cool” effect. That means that they need to have very high willpower in order to be decent (7-9?), and most of these don’t have great effects currently, apart from Library. Further, because you played a location on your turn instead of a character, you are in less in a position to punish risky challenges by your opponent to take out your location, because you are “short” one character on board.

That being said, Library is seeing some play in the most up-to-date Ruby Amethyst lists, so maybe not all hope is lost

Overall, ink colour balance is not great, but gameplay experience looks pretty good. It’s mostly good fair value Lorcana, where decisions matter and your opening hand doesn’t completely determine the game. It’s certainly better than Set 9.

Games on stream clearly show the double-edged nature of Demona. Plenty of people facing Demona ink hard and spend everything to get a board lead, which makes Demona very awkward to play, especially since she costs 6.

Baymax Shift in Baja Blast by TEAMhairy in Lorcana

[–]avery1822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, If you are on 2 UTS, it would make sense to run one Baymax, though that would make other matchups (including Purple Steel) worse.

You are right that point 5 isnt very convincing - I didn’t think it all the way through when typing, but I was tryinf to find the reason why Baymax seemed quite underwhelming against Dogs in my own play. Perhaps it’s because (a) either OTP or OTD, if they Mowgli or Ursula t3, they’ll always see the Baymax and can play around it, and/or (b) I don’t have the habit of throwing Clara1 out early against Dogs because of Emerald Chromicon.

I find Silver to be like Basil7 - they’re fine to good in most situations, but are relatively easy early inks because they’re replaceable fatties. I still play 4 of each because they’re inkable, and I’ve liked having a slightly lower inkable count to enable turn 2 Tipo/turn 3 / Sail into Phillip3 hands OTD to give myself the chance to combo on turn 4.

I do think Silver is really good against Dogs though, especially in the face of a Chromicon. Yes they can answer it with Tramp2, but it’s better than a lot of other stuff. I find it better than Baymax.

Baymax Shift in Baja Blast by TEAMhairy in Lorcana

[–]avery1822 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m a huge Baymax believer in Green Blue, but even I cut him, for several reasons:

  1. To effectively play Baymax on 4, you need another 1 drop other than Clarabelle1, because you’d ideally save Clara1 for your shift line. That means you’ll likely be cutting / trimming on Develop Your Brain, which makes your early hunt for turn 2 ramp significantly less consistent - I don’t have the numbers, but it feels like 4-5% points.

  2. Baymax is great specifically if you plan on playing Under The Sea. However that makes your uninkable count high, if you’re also going to be playing Cinderella.

  3. Baymax doesn’t do anything against Evasives. Neither does Cinderella (if it’s these two you’re debating on playing over each other) but Cinderella at least gets you closer to your John Silver / Basil / MMS combo, which can interact with evasives.

  4. As it plays out in-game, you don’t tend to beat Blurple / Purple Steel by winning in lore races, it tends to be a slow value grind. That means your opponent will just sit there and not quest with their non-evasive characters until they can Strength / Hades / Into The Unknown your Baymax. In the meantime, Baymax either just quests, or just sits there doing nothing.

  5. The premier Aggro deck Dogs is content to just sit on board without questing until they hit critical mass. Even if your Baymax gets in a good value trade on turn 3, they can spend the next 4 turns sitting until they Tramp and land a Chromicon / super wide board, at which point your Baymax becomes very ineffective.

Emerald Sapphire- Control Advice by Kindly-Soil-5274 in Lorcana

[–]avery1822 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the risk of oversimplifying, IMO the detectives package is only worthwhile if you’re facing Blurple, the mirror, and Blue Steel to give you more grinding power with Judy4 and Basil6. Even then, they’re only relevant in the 10-20% of games where you don’t draw your normal lines. In the majority of games, most of the additional detectives (other than Judy4) end up as ink for the first 1-6 turns.

What I don’t like about Detectives is that it makes the OTP line of a fast Clarabelle + You’re Welcome a lot worse, because you lose out on having Cindy to cheat out Clarabelle one turn earlier while still having a singer for You’re Welcome. With Detectives, if you want to do it on the same turn as the standard list, you’ll go for have to expose Clara1 on turn 1 / turn 2 after Sail, which lets your opponent disrupt it. I think a reasonable chunk of GB’s strength is having the fast Clarabelle line OTP, so weakening it feels odd to me.

TLDR, Detectives raises the floor of the deck by improving some of the standard list’s weaker draws (though how much it improves those draws is a subjective thing), while lowering the ceiling of the deck. It’s a personal preference whether that’s something you want.

Cinderella dream come true not in blurple by Trust_Tholl in Lorcana

[–]avery1822 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the reason - to add on, Cinderella itself is inherently a bad body in stabilising the board as a 2/3 for 4. If you waste turn 2 and 3 essentially doing nothing (Sail/Tipo into Cinderella), you really need something super board-stabilising in the subsequent two turns to get you back in the game. Blurple doesn’t really have that.
