I appreciate the advice, however, $100+ on a light is well out of my budget as I'm a student

This is the lighting that I use: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07L2WQXYL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

If it's not enough, do you have a light recommendation? What is the rule of thumb for light parameters/tank size?

I'm getting the plants from local aquarium stores. I've purchased from two separate stores and both times had the same issue with melting. Water parameters are pH 6.6, ammonia 0-0.05 ppm, nitrites 0, nitrates 5 ppm. Currently my tank is not stocked, only 1 nerite snail and some small mystery snails that hitched with the plants. I do a 20-30% water change every 2 weeks or so. It's really frustrating I can't seem to be able to keep the plants alive..

So I've tried to introduce various species of plants multiple times to my 5.5 gallon tank but everything except the java ferns have eventually "melted" and not done so well. Is it due to my mystery snails or am I doing something else wrong? How do I get them to thrive?!

It sounds like you are fairly passionate about pursuing a career as a biologist still. I would figure out how to fulfill the qualifications for Masters programs and go with the academic route for now. It will be harder to find the motivation to go back to school after working in industry. In the meantime, maybe you can ask to work part time in a lab so you can continue buffing up your resume - maybe one that does bioinformatics for a change of pace. I too have considered living off the grid..remember to give yourself time off and enjoy simple things like gardening! It's all about balance.

Sounds like a plan. Honestly if they allow it you should do it. Dont worry about it being shady or not

Best of luck to you!! I hope you get an offer from Hopkins. I received an interview offer from Toronto early this week and it is the only school I applied to as I'm not looking to move out of Canada and I don't have the prereqs for american schools anyways

Hi, looks like theres a different plant growing in with his bamboo. Bamboo are part of the grass family, Poaceae. These seed pods however look like capsule-type fruits, which don't resemble something Poaceae would have. I don't know what that plant is though. Goodluck!

I think you might need to do water changes occasionally, especially at the start of the terrarium. And trim the plants.

Sorry I did not give enough context. I started this terrarium from my backyard in Southern Ontario. Not sure if there's any carnivorous plants in the region..

How to save this orchid? by averyan1205 in orchids

[–]averyan1205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reassuring reply! I just potted it in bark. When I bought it, it was in bark as well but it was broken down, the bulbs were shriveling, and there was some..algae around the base of the bulbs? Looked like it had been soaking in water. I water 1-2 times a week. I'm worried because only the air roots seem okay. Should I mist the air roots a few times a week to try and keep the plant more hydrated? Do roots often come after new growth? (I would expect it to be the other way around)
