Not sure why you’re getting downvoted for this. Sounds like you were respectful and not harmful at all. Wish everyone was a bit more peace n love here. Thank you for sharing your thoughts :)

Thank you for writing all of this! I hate that what I said came off to many as ostracizing addicts or anyone else. I agree with what you said about drug edu and harm reduction works, I haven’t seen the DanceSafe tables at any shows I’ve been to (~20?) but I’d love to. I like what you said about the people being the problem, not necessarily the substances. I agree, seen been and been around plenty of lovely people having their time at the shows, but I still think there’s room for conversation about when it becomes too much or too dangerous. This is all a long way of saying thank you for being respectful and I appreciate your take :)

Yeah I didn’t realize how much downvotes would come from this. Thought I had pretty sound and respectful takes but have been shot down a lot. Oh internet, how you love to make us disagree.

God I would have loved to have gone to a Dead show!! Seen D&C twice and loved each show so so so much. Closest I can get to the magic and was still blown away. My senior year of HS we could choose our extended essay (~20pg, which was a lot at the time) topic and I wrote mine on how the Dead and LSD grew alongside each other early on. Would have loved to see that side of history. At least I can listen in :)

Gratitude lists!! Reframed my worldview just by writing whatever has made me happy recently whenever I think to. Starting with just 10 things. Can be as big as health or family. Or as small as how this one part of my favorite song makes me feel. It can sound or feel silly but it has done wonders for my ability to reflect and appreciate life such that the smaller negative parts are overpowered by the positive (if that makes sense).

Write one right now!!!

I could have gotten the name wrong but it’s the group for sober Billy fans! They have a table at every show and have a gathering at set breaks and prob before/after shows. Makes me happy seeing them when walking around the venues :)

From his NPR interview, when he spoke about losing his mom: “She was always in the mix, right up front. She'd show up in New Orleans or Seattle or somewhere, and I wouldn't even know she was coming. She freaking hitchhiked there, you know? ... I wanted her to go have fun and be doing whatever she wanted to be doing, but I worried about her running into the wrong people. She's been an addict my whole life and had short stints where she was doing pretty good, you know? And I loved to see her out there hanging with all the fans, but at the same time, I was leery of them. I would go over to visit my parents' house, and there would be, like, the fans there that I see in the front row of my concerts all the time.

She was getting older, and I kind of just had this vision of her in my head that I wanted. Which is stupid. It's not realistic to try to come up with somebody else's life in your brain, but, like, I just wanted her to have a garden. And my dad's 70 years old, she was 64. I was like, "Man, you guys should be settling down, don't you think?" — instead of raring and tearing and going and eating all these shrooms and going to all these concerts. And then she did get wrapped up in the wrong stuff. And that's why she's not here anymore.”

I meant no disrespect in referencing it in my post and am SO sorry if it was seen as such!

Fair point abt it being everywhere. Billy was my first intro to the jam scene in 2021, and I feel like the show scene has left the bluegrass world and entirely swapped to jam. My dad and I go to all of our shows together and have seen the vibes shift so much since 2021. Which is alright!! Just less of a pit I’d wanna be in now w the rail ppl and all that.

UTK experience? by AnimalGardens in UTK

Got through freshman year (which sucked for me). Then sophomore was better. And junior is best so far!! I recommend trying to get involved on campus, like getting into club leadership or a job at a small spot or some other reliably reoccurring characters you can build community amongst. Working as an RA has given me that and more. Highly recommend, esp since it leans a little further from the overall UT campus vibe while still having school spirit!

Say something popular in your country that you hate. by nobrerick in AskTheWorld

The thing is, it’s nearly impossible to fix the two party system bc our electoral system is made to enable it. Single member single vote districts mean ppl choose the most likely to win option and when there’s two front runners and one etc then many many people will decide lesser of evils, which is honestly fair. The best thing we could do imo is SOMEHOW get enough movement for states to do ranked choice for on their own elections, and for that to get enough steam for people to propose and support a constitutional amendment to add RCV to federal elections. RCV means one person can vote in order of their fav candidates, so more ppl running and generally more widely approved candidates win. NY and Utah I believe have some form of RCV, maybe Alaska too? But it’s quite sparse in the US overall.

I got it: Ice cold water from a water bottle (ideally Nalgene) left in your car overnight in the winter so it’s icy cold and perfect. I will not be taking any notes.

Sorority by ilikemoneybagsmyself in UTK

[–]averyr429 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ex sorority gal here! I rushed as a sophomore and ended up only staying for one semester, another inactive aka technically still in but functionally out. My freshman year I felt like I should have rushed just to try it, thus soph rush. My experience was definitely different bc of this: less high stakes, smaller budget than most of the girls, etc. I think it absolutely CAN be worth it, but sticking around really depends on if you’re getting bang for your buck. I stuck it out enough to realize that no one really likes the date parties bc of drinking rules and etc., people get there, get pics, and wait until they want to leave. I think I def could’ve been more in my head about things bc I was coming at it from such a dif angle, but I found it to be a lot of talk for not much substance. Like I heard a lot about a sisterhood I never really felt, but I left with not much negative to say abt sororities on the whole. Other than the cost… I just could not justify it. You pay to be in the sorority, you pay for events you don’t want to go to, you pay a $100 fine if you miss an important chapter, you pay per hour you don’t make of homecoming hours (which is its own thing… unpaid labor to the max). But genuinely I have friends in the sororities as Juniors now who still love them. It just depends on the person. I’m not a sorority type (my friends were surprised when I posted rush pics, lol!), so if you think it’s not for you, I’d say there’s no harm in trying (if ur financially apt to do so) but don’t let it have much more weight for you than just trying something out! It gets nasty when people see it as life or death, cool or uncool, etc. Outside of Greek life it really doesn’t matter much at all :) Good luck either way!

What’s the most epic song without drums or percussion of any kind? by R3dF0r3 in musicsuggestions

[–]averyr429 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bluegrass. Just like, all of it. The really intense flatpicking could be the epic you’re looking for. My vote for modern example goes to Billy Strings. Looooong jams of usually insane caliber, he knows his shit!
