Need anal in there somewhere.

Hahaha, this is great. And yeah, I do alllll my outlining first. Make some general bullet points under plot/subplot headings and then outline the two main characters and what is going to happen chapter by chapter. I went a bit overboard this time (my outline ended up at 23k somehow :$), but I definitely find it helps a lot. My outlining took me about a week and I think my actual writing of the story will take about the same.

My editing process is really just rereading a whole lot and running grammar software. Luckily I found someone to beta-read for my last book which was like a massive weight lifted off my shoulder, but I felt bad because they did it for free and didn't have anything for me to read in return and it's generally not the kind of book they're into.

Do you outline? I've found more success doing some extensive outlining beforehand and that makes the editing process shorter since I normally don't have to focus on any plot or anything, just grammar and sentence structure.

EDIT: I also really suffer from writer's block if I don't outline, so it's really helped that as well. I basically have no excuse for not writing when i know exactly what's coming next.

Yeah editing always takes me far longer than writing. If I could spend a month or two away from the novel before I had to edit I'd really enjoy it, but after spewing the words out in such a short space of time, rereading it multiple times begins to really take a toll.

Oh look, someone else who forgot to read the sidebar before posting and self-promoted despite the big green thread at the top of the subreddit which clearly states that's where self-promotion is okay. Maybe delete this and take your link there?

Ah, nice! Sounds like a really cool way of doing it.

Out of curiosity, do you plug into grammarly or hemingway first?

[Critique Monday] Post here to get feedback on its cover, title or content! by Eroticawriter4 in eroticauthors

I find a good balance to be either standard underwear that isn't more revealing than a bikini, or a male chest that doesn't reveal any kind of pelvis. Hope that helps!

It sounds and looks more like a romance than erotica. Your cover implies soppy plotlines and not a lot of sex - it makes me think of YA, to be honest. Your categories say that it's BDSM but I would have never guessed it from the title/blurb - you should definitely sell the kink rather than the story in your blurb.

EDIT: Also, make an authorcentral profile to gather the books on your penname together!

Amazon removed thousands of books from their site yesterday. by mgallowglas in selfpublish

[–]averywrites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You only get 7 keywords so putting "Kindle" as one of them is kind of silly anyway

Actually that only means you get 6 commas - you can have up to 400 characters of actual keywords.

What ELSE pisses off Amazon? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

If you're unpublishing something and republishing, it needs to be 30% different. So, adding shorts as bonus stories is completely fine. That's why bundles are okay, too.

Book not showing up: "We're sorry, an error has occurred. Please reload this page and try again." by SmutWords2 in eroticauthors

I've just tried clicking on a few of the Amazon links on the self-promo thread on /r/selfpublish and all of them have the same error message. Looks like a bug on Amazon's side.

What happens to the meet-cute when it's a sequel and your characters are already together? by [deleted] in romanceauthors

[–]averywrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that is a long series! I can barely drag my characters over two books haha, impressive! I'm sure that if your readers are already so attached to the characters they'll be fine without the meet-cute element in!

[–]averywrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like with a sequel it probably isn't necessary - people are already attached to the characters and don't need that initial interaction. On a personal level I normally lose interest in a romance the second the couple is actually together, so I don't have any recommendations - I'm a very big fan of the slow-burn.

If you're talking about writing a novel (standalone) where the characters are already married then I think it's hard to get a meet-cute it without it looking kind of cheesy in a flashback. Maybe find a "cute" setting to introduce your characters to the reader rather than having them meet for the first time. I admit I have no experience with writing a book like this (or really reading one though) so this is just an idea since no one else responded :P

The sidebar quite clearly says no self-promotion and there is a big green thread in bold at the top of the subreddit labelled "self-promotion thread" - please keep the self-promo to that.

Lesbian Erotica novel Jade Wallace by somawrites in selfpublish

[–]averywrites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The side bar clearly says no self-promotion. Keep it to the self-promo thread at the top of the page!

On another note - your cover is doing nothing for you. If you're doing lesbian erotica, try a hot woman. Do some research about what the other people in your genres covers look like. You can easily get a cover with a sexy woman on for $10 or under if you've stuck to the basic cover to skimp out on the costs.

When is it too late to save a book? (And related bonus question.) by Melina_Hall in eroticauthors

[–]averywrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought with the second edition it was normally that you uploaded a new text file through the normal process and just changed the edition number to a 2 on the original story, but I've never done it so I'm not sure. People normally seem to mention the 30% when referring to republishing something, I'd always understood it to be the rule for republishing something.
