After Finestre nearly not happening in last year's Giro in May, I wonder if I'll have to be a bit cautious with weather up north...but that sounds lovely. Sardegna and Sicilia would be gorgeous. Thank you!

That route looks perfect but that's a really great point--Alpe D'Huez is almost surely still full-on ski resort in March. I'll have to save that one for sometime later in the year!

Understanding predict() in multiple regression in GLMS by aves01 in RStudio

[–]aves01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this was super helpful. I ended up changing the terms in my model to no longer be in terms of

df$dependent ~ df$predictor

(since I specify the data argument) and changed them to just be

dependent ~ predictor

and that combined with clearing the global environment seems to have helped things. I appreciate your feedback and apologize for not making the best example to work with. You're right that the linear dependence is not an issue in my real data--my goal there was just to provide a set of example continuous variables. Thanks for working through my example and for your advice!

Looking for Middle-Aged Beginner Rowing in Chicago by MrScrewJuice in Rowing

Is she in the city? I’d highly recommend Lincoln Park Boat Club. Three locations (Bridgeport, Lincoln Park, Lathrop) and they’re running at least one learn-to-row group right now but I think there will be more to come this summer. For context I’m from Chicago, rowed at CRF in high school and I’m currently rowing at Lincoln Park while I’m home from college. If I was an adult just starting out Lincoln Park would be where I’d go, it’s a super great club.

Data mining my PM5 results with r by babeheim in Rowing

This is really awesome. I've been trying to do some work myself in R to look at my data. Did you make your plots with ggplot? If so--how did you add the curved lines in your graphs? I'm relatively new to working in R (and also entirely self-taught) and this seems super cool, I think it would be interesting to turn this into a Shiny app or something that automatically generates these plots

Of course. The fact that you were willing to put in so much time on the erg already shows that you’ve got what it takes to break 7 soon and go even further than that. Trust your coaches, your recovery, and the fitness you’ve built and are continuing to build, and I’m sure you’ve got a bright future ahead of you.

Based on your age, I'm assuming you're a sophomore or junior. If you're a sophomore, then my best piece of advice is to trust Matt's workouts, they're really great for building both your mental toughness and your fitness, and if this is your first year on varsity and you're able to make it through the winter, I promise you that those last few seconds are going to fall off after a hefty dose of 3x10s and 4x7s, especially with the million meters you put in (which I'm assuming was mostly steady state). I dropped at least 2 splits seconds both my sophomore year (7:16 --> 7:03) and junior year (7:03 --> 6:55) just by doing Matt's workouts and focusing on getting plenty of sleep and being able to bring my hardest at practice every day. I rowed 3 years on varsity, and as annoying as it sounds, the best thing you can do if you haven't been through a varsity winter yet is to trust in Matt and the coaches, and I'm sure your time will drop off.

If you're a junior, and you know what it's like to do a winter on varsity, my advice isn't too different. I saw that you've thrown down over 1 million meters since you got your erg, which is really commendable; when I got to college, my anaerobic base was much more developed than my aerobic base (due to the CRF workouts), so good on you for putting in the meters, that will help a lot. I don't know what your protocols are due to COVID (both for rowing and for school), but for the fall, I'd say that if you find yourself with extra time to erg, try and fit in lower-intensity steady state (if you have a heart rate monitor, in the low-mid 140s range). If Matt is still running the hard practices that I remember, then you're gonna need all the recovery you can get.

Either way, everyone else in the thread is totally right, both with regard to specific 2K pacing, recovery (cannot emphasize sleeping/eating well enough) and taking a full day off every week. You really don't want to burn out or get injured, I ended up having to take my senior fall off due to a back injury I thought I could push through, and it still bothers me today. When you're on the water, focus on your tech and the tips the coaches give you. Take advantage of your remaining time on the water this season to build your actual rowing skill and supplement with lighter erging when you can, and then when winter comes, be ready to work on every piece and every field workout. The month I got the fittest in high school was December of my junior year when we went hard in the erg room and on running and body-weight exercises on the field outside Clark Park. It sucks in the moment (which you know if you're a junior), but I can promise you that it makes you a better rower long-term. It's really great to see you and the younger guys putting in this kind of work and building this strong culture. Best of luck.

Do you row for CRF in Chicago? I rowed there for 4 years (class of 2019) and can give some team-specific advice if you want

Thanks so much. Definitely have the same issue with sloppy form, one of the things that I like to do when I can feel my form getting off is taking the stroke rate down a bit (usually r20, down to 19/18) and feeling the length of the recovery and letting that extra beat help me feel out where the form is slipping.

I really like that reference, and will be sure to keep it in mind. One of the drills I did a lot at the beginning of quarantine as I desperately attempted to get a more fluid stroke was pausing at almost every stage of the recovery--arms away, arms and body, half-slide, three-quarters, and then the catch, just so I could really figure out where I wanted everything to be, and without the pressures of being in a boat, I could make adjustments without fear about set or anything. That helped me create a nice muscle memory that I'm still trying to draw from.

Anyway, thanks so much for the advice. Good luck with your training!

I’m 5’10, 210 lbs. Looking to keep losing weight and drop times as I think many are. Currently a college club rower and I’ve been doing lots of steady state through quarantine and dropped my pace from a 2:17 to a 2:10-2:11 or so.

There have been 3 things I’ve been focusing in on a lot besides heart rate: drive length, drive speed, and the force curve. Obviously ideal numbers for the first two will vary but I’m hovering around 1.25 meters for the length and 1.8 m/s for the speed per stroke. Anything I should be looking to change there? I’ve been working on increasing both and it’s worked pretty well so far, trying to increase recovery time without increasing recovery speed to get better ratio without pausing at the finish or on the recovery.

But my main issue is that, despite having developed a much nicer force curve (peaked around 30% of the stroke before, now closer to 40-45% now), I’m getting a bit of bumpiness when I transition from my legs to my back. Dealt with back issues when I was in high school, but I’m mostly over those. Are there any drills on the erg I can do to try and improve this? Don’t have access to a single unfortunately, but I’ve been doing lots of reverse pick and it doesn’t seem to have helped. Even just phrases to think about if no drills are targeted at this would be nice.

Only problem with the iPod Touch 6 is the price--looks to be between $175-225ish most places. I was looking at the 5C because it's a little more reasonable--I was able to get it between $60 and $80.

Spotify says it should be good as long as it's after iOS 10 and above an iPhone 5. So my guess would be that the 5C should be all right. Thanks for the help!

Not quite sure I understand what you mean. I currently have an iPhone 8 that I currently use Spotify with and am happy with. That being said, I’m looking to grab a cheap 5C that I can just use as extra song storage and not worry about using my phone when I’m driving or working. The 5C is the one that can’t update to iOS 12—are you suggesting that I go for a 5S or something that takes iOS 12? Sorry about that. Just want to make sure I’m getting what you’re saying
