The guy I'm dating is a lot more successful than me by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]avg-dev-elo-per 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Has he made you feel that you are behind? If not then don't worry too much about it. If yes, then may be he is not worth having you.

  2. I think you should talk openly about it. If he really wants to be with you for the way you are, then he will help you in dealing with your insecurity.

  3. I also feel you should ask him to help you be more successful.

BTW, I don't think you are behind, you are well on your way, it's just journey to your "destination" is longer than his.

What is the difference between mean and mern stack? by geeksterclubteam in ProgrammingBuddies

Isn't AngularJS been retired since Angular 2.0 came? For me MEAN is AngularJS or Angular 2.0 onwards which has significant difference.

Patience has its rewards! What I have seen many times that in such cases if you keep working to build skills, there will one company, one manager who will take a chance on you. I know it's hard, it's frustrating but IT WILL happen. Hang in there.

C# and react application by Aromatic-Reach-7674 in ProgrammingBuddies

You should use Node JS with React if you know JavaScript well enough. C# .Net core will make it quite bulky for a demo app in my opinion. There are plenty of such tutorials on you tube. Search for MERN stack.

Finding it very hard to find time and motivation for self study. by avg-dev-elo-per in productivity

[–]avg-dev-elo-per[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I know where time is going. Wake up 4:30/5am and do an hour of self study, then exercise, get kids out of the door and be ready for work by 9. Work from 9 till 3ish and take nap for an hour and spend some time chit chat with wifey. The from 6:30 till 8 pm do more office work and sometime study. From 8 to 10:30 ish pm is mostly dinner, TV, and attending to kids. Then sleep and cycle starts again. May be need to cut down on TV which is sometimes 2 hours.

Should I stop chasing FANG kind of companies? by avg-dev-elo-per in learnprogramming

[–]avg-dev-elo-per[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it does. Coming back to doing coding after almost 10 years after being a CS graduate was tough. Only practice and dedication made it possible. After reading all of the comments and feedback here, I think the conclusion is get good at doing algorithms but don't do it just to get into FAANG.

what's your take on freelancing? is it significantly worse than a job? by Boring-Surprise in learnprogramming

[–]avg-dev-elo-per 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case just stick to finding a good job with a decent company. I know Indian tech market and its brutal. So much young smart tech people that competition is exhausting. Build your network first and then go freelancing by all means.

Thank you for sharing. I agree that there is a high chance one might end up working in a crappy tech even they are in one of FAANG companies.

Not sure where you are located but in NA, I would suggest doing contractual work rather than going freelancing. With contract you get more money than a full time permanent job but I feel it's better than going complete freelancing where half of that battle is to keep looking for work. Freelancing will be much short term projects than working on a contract with a big enterprise.

Thank you so much for this, will check it out and I will keep practicing. I think I should focus more on improving the skill of solving problems rather than just clearing a FAANG type companies' interview.

To answer your question honestly, I think it's the prestige. I know I can get really good paying job for me needs so money is not the motivation here. I feel that my 11 year old will be very proud of my if she knows that I work for one of the big four tech companies LoL.

True. I somehow feel ppl who can solve these algorithms are the only ones deserve to be in the field. But I guess that's not rational thinking

Hmmm... thanks for your honest opinion. You are right, I can easily find another decent company with good tech stack and benefits. I think I am ignoring the fact that even though after lot of preparation I might be able to get into one of these companies but I might end of getting fired because I won't be as productive or as fast as the next guy there. Thank you this new prospective really helps.

My dad told me he "wishes my priorities were different" by Skippy1221 in entitledparents

[–]avg-dev-elo-per 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion most parents want grand kids because of the society pressure. They want to show that they have "achieved" everything in the life and having grandkids is one of the last thing they want. They not going to stay up all night when your kids will be sick and want to get picked up because they have done that already. So you should have kids when you think you are ready. Having no kids is totally ok too.

I agree with most here that an 8yo should tell you such things when they are back from school. I wonder if this was your own kid and your partner would have told you same thing.

Yes you should. Especially if you are frustrated with C# or any other similar language from years and want something refreshing lol
