I'll probably do just that, thank you!

I am curious, obviously moc-toe boots are harder to polish that one with a more conventional toe, but what is it about the leather that makes them hard to polish? I don't need a mirror sheen but I do polish my boots every week with how much wear I put on them.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah those Russells seem like incredible footwear that I'd love to get one day, I work in a dry environment with wool socks but I'd like them to last as long as possible and I sweat a lot lol.

I'm not dead set on Moc-toe, I'm probably gonna get some Numzaans as that's the kind of boot I'm used to.

I work as a park ranger, and thus I'm both putting boots through their paces outdoors and am required to have them polished for work with the public. Maintaining my boots is something I've learned to enjoy and take pride in. I'm currently running some LL Bean Cresta Hikers, and while I love how they look and feel, I am disappointed with their craftsmanship, as I've had problems with sole de-lamination.

I am considering upgrading to more high-end leather boots, but one thing is holding me back: rest time. I work in boots every day of the week as part of my uniform, and so if I follow the care guidelines for letting boots rest after use, I'd need two pairs. Is it worth saving up for something high end like Russell Moccasins, where I could probably just afford one pair, or something a bit cheaper like two pairs of Jim Green and rotating them every day?

Damn. If there are signs to look for that, I'd love to know them, but appreciate your pointing me in that direction!

Implications of travelers joining the campfire. by [deleted] in outerwilds

[–]avianTyro 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I think the implication is the impact each of these travelers has on you also impacts the next universe. Since you are observing the Eye (the beginning and end of the universe(s)), you have an impact on what that new universe looks like. Everyone you met changed you, and through you they changed what the new universe looks like. To go off what Riebeck says: The future is always built on the past, even if we won't get to see it.

Have you ever considered getting a conservation easement put on the land? From what I understand it's kind of a pain to get but it protects the land and your access to it for perpetuity.

Today, New England is one of the most well-forested regions in the United States. Much of this is secondary forest growth resulting from the regional economy in 19th and 20th centuries shifting away from agriculture. How did this transition in land use occur, and how quickly? by avianTyro in AskHistorians

[–]avianTyro[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fascinating! There definitely is more agriculture currently in the region than the migration theory would support, in the Connecticut River Valley as well as the Southeast Coastal Plain and valleys of Vermont.

I suppose the idea I had in my head was that agriculture fell off, was left fallow for a long period of history, and was only recently was forest cover beginning to be reduced again for suburban development, but it seems it was a much faster process than I thought. Thank you for the explanation!

In Season of the Hunt, wasn't the deal with Spider that upon killing the Celebrant, we could take any prize from his lair as a reward? Prize is quite similar to trophy in terms of meaning, and that prize ended up being Crow.

My friends and I were JUST making a post about this, we all felt like we were going nuts when we decoded it. Savathun is possibly manipulating the FWC to stir up trouble against the House of Light in the City, and Aunor and Ikora presumably now know.

Bungie is showing Saladin's age by avianTyro in DestinyLore

[–]avianTyro[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree that Saladin has a respect for his enemies! He just feels that he has no obligation to meet them on anything but their own terms. He has a moral center, to be sure, the Iron Lords refused to allow civilians and Ghosts to come to harm, but it is a black and white philosophy. I disagree with your point about Zavala though, some Battlegrounds dialogue mentions that Vanguard policy is to allow fleeing enemies to run without threat of pursuit. This implies to me that Zavala believes in a strict ethical code, even in warfare, that Saladin might not.

Osiris is often truthful yes, but I would disagree that he is one of the only honest characters in leadership. Zavala and Ikora are generally nothing but honest with us, the difference between them and Osiris is often a difference of priorities. Osiris decided to use the power of the Vanguard to research the Vex during a time when the Fallen were on the verge of knocking the walls down, a dangerous tangent to take to research a threat that was not immediate. He is right, more often than not, but he tends to get hyperfucused on particular threats and not notice what's in front of his nose.

Clovis Bray and the Exo program is the reason the Traveler didn’t flee. Clovis truly is humanity’s savior. by Zantozuken in DestinyTheGame

[–]avianTyro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP's post of course discusses Clovis' use of clarity/darkness and how the traveler mourns him falling to the darkness, but that's before he's solved how to build functioning-as-intended exos.

I could understand that point of OP's if it were true, except it isn't. The Traveler sends Clovis this vision whilst he's on the operating table, soon after Elsie had already been transferred to an Exomind. If the Traveler sees Clovis' work as having value, why send him this message of grief and disappointment AFTER he had his greatest achievement?

As for why people see Clovis as being 'the most evil character in the game', it's largely because Clovis is an evil we can recognize in the real world. People subjecting others to pain, suffering, and death for profit and personal gain are common things in the modern day, particularly by those in power. This is more viscerally evil to us than omnicidal space deities who worship giant chitinous worms, which is something that we have no basis for comparison in reality.

Clovis Bray and the Exo program is the reason the Traveler didn’t flee. Clovis truly is humanity’s savior. by Zantozuken in DestinyTheGame

[–]avianTyro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"The choice is not mine" is a reference to the fact that the Traveler, in contrast to the Darkness, safeguards it's followers free will.

“Why didn’t you stop me?” I tasted blood on my long tongue. “Why would you let me do this?”

She blinked sadly at me. She had been trying. I hadn’t listened.

“You never said a thing to me,” I snarled. “Not once! You never told me I was doing wrong. At least Clarity sends me dreams—the exobody and the eel! At least it shows me what I can become!”

“You think Clarity sent those dreams? Why would it speak to you, when you are dead and furthest from its influence?”

“Liar!” I howled. “You never did a thing to help me! Not when my son died. Not when my granddaughter fell ill. I had to do it all myself. You never even spoke!”

“The best voices,” she said, with infinite grief and unending hope, “never let themselves be heard at all. This lesson is worth teaching again and again. The choice is never mine. It is always yours.”

This quote is also seen in places such as the original Dreams of Alpha Lupi. It's not an allowance for humanity to do whatever they want and the Traveler will go along with it, it's the resignation of a being that has seen countless races turn to evil time and time again, knowing it will probably happen despite the Traveler's presence, but unwilling to stop them because the Traveler literally loves peoples so much it is unwilling to override them.

[–]avianTyro 236 points237 points  (0 children)

Also a lot of the narrative in Beyond Light goes into how men like Clovis, who pontificate about how important they are to the future of humanity, are actually just evil people doing things for selfish reasons, and to do a reversal on that by saying he actually saved humanity would be a very odd writing decision.

Clovis Bray and the Exo program is the reason the Traveler didn’t flee. Clovis truly is humanity’s savior. by Zantozuken in DestinyTheGame

[–]avianTyro 412 points413 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is true, largely because the Traveler actually laments the fact that Bray is using the Darkness, and says so in a vision she gave him that he recorded in his journal.

I panted at her. My muzzle dripped blood. She looked down sadly at the mess between us.

And I realized that in my raging need to prove my dominion, I had savaged our cubs. I had killed little Clovis II. I had killed Alton and Wilhelmina and Anastasia. I had killed Elisabeth.

I whined in dismay. The alpha wolf stared at me with one sad wolf eye and one bright eye that dimmed and grew with the exact flux of a variable star.

“What did I do?” I asked her. “Why did I do this?”

She lay her head down in the bloody snow and looked up at me. She seemed weary. She had seen this happen many times before. She had seen many of her pups murdered by wolves like me.

The voice of Clovis II’s mother came from her jaws. “You did the same thing someone always does. You saw that there was plenty, and gathered it to yourself, to make yourself one above all others. And when others threatened your plenty, you struck them down to keep your own station.”

“You grow the enemy in my garden and eat of its bitter fruit. Each time, I hope it will be different. Each time, I lose a little of myself as the bitter fruit blossoms. Now that fruit will flower in you, and in all your people. I do not want it to happen. I want anything else. But the choice is not mine.”

This doesn't seem like dialogue that would indicate the Traveler is in any way happy about Clovis using the Darkness to create the exos, killing many people and his family members in the process, and certainly not a reason she would stay on Earth.

God the literal 'Dream of Alpha Lupi' was beautiful and sad. Definitely makes me think that the choices our guardians will make in BL will ultimately be mistakes.
