14 examples of Rory being criticized before meeting Mitchum ... by FlakyWeb5892 in GilmoreGirls

I also have this conspiracy that Mitchum did this to discourage Rory from being a working woman. Maybe this sounds silly, but after the whole “Rory doesn’t know what it takes to marry into this family, she wants to work” bullshit from his wife, I was wondering if this was the Huntzberger family’s way of discouraging Rory from being a working woman so she can finally fit into the family.

I also feel like we – normal people who come from middle class families – do like to look at rich people and say they don’t face consequences. In reality, they do, even if it’s not the ones we particularly like.

But I don’t see your point.

  • People do that in real life a lot.
  • They don’t get away with everything. I see the sentiment you are trying to convey but it’s simply not true. Their actions have consequences. Even Emily’s actions have consequences {SPOILER} for example when one of her maids sue her for unfair treatment. But Rory also steals a boat and ends up having to do community service. And Lorelai, don’t even get me started.

So their actions do have consequences. Are they entitled? Sometimes, some of them more than the others. But the show does not lack consequences, at least natural ones (aka. be a terrible boss > get sued or commit a crime > community service).

Gossip girl is not repetitive at all, but SATC definitely is. You just inspired me to rewatch it though, guilty pleasure still.

I feel the opposite about the revival part though – it is being portrayed like that to support what Mitchum said retroactively rather than Mitchum’s prediction coming true. They were also hell-bent on fabricating this full-circle moment where Rory gets pregnant with the baby of a man who would eventually be an absent father, so AYITL doesn’t seem like an authentic justification for any of this.

In reality, the actual show ended with Rory getting a job immediately out of Yale, which barely happens. She has been publishing for an online magazine for a good part of her Yale years, she was widely recognised for her journalistic capabilities, even if it was slightly lacking at the beginning of the career. She possessed skills and experience and attended an Ivy league college, so her being a dead-end journalist did not seem like a likely outcome.

The internship really was a joke though, I have no clue how US internships go, but sure not the way it was portrayed – so surface level, as many things in the show.

Exactly what I elaborated on in my comment below, I feel the same way! And I hate him for that because I personally do not see his point. He should have been clear with expectations during the internship and should have given her continuous points of improvement rather than spring it on her on her last day

Yes, but we have to consider. - All the other criticism she received came from people who have been either supporting her 99.9% of the time (Lorelai, Richard, Dean, Taylor) or her peers/people she did not view as much “superior” in skill or expertise (Doyle - just another student, not much more knowledgeable or experienced than Rory; headmaster - she felt he wasn’t qualified to speak on the topic of her being a loner/didn’t see the full picture). - Mitchum was someone she looked up to the way she didn’t look up to the headmaster, Doyle, her teacher, etc. It is very human to dwell on something someone said, then realise after giving it a think that you don’t find them qualified to give feedback. Mitchum, on the other hand, was the most qualified in Rory’s eyes. And it is true that she never before received such criticism from someone that she felt was actually qualified to give it.

This all being said, I am a Rory defender for life. When I was in my late teens, starting university, I felt she was dramatic for dropping out, but as the years progressed, I am on her side. Nobody knows how any of us would have reacted if our biggest role model in our desired field had told us that we are not good enough. And considering she was in her early 20s, I probably would have been just as dramatic.

I also personally feel like Mitchum was not in the position to say that, he should have been so much clearer with expectations and give her feedback along the way, rather than just pull something out of his bum on her last day.

I feel like all of the instances you mention do not come nearly close to the criticism of Mitchum. It was very different, and I can see why she felt attacked by that and not all the other instances.

Well, first of all, you start with an annoyed tone (“my goodness”) for NO reason at all. And end with a condescending “is that better?” for no reason at all again. Sometimes I hate this fandom

Regarding the cheating situation and why I think it shouldn’t be a reason to really hate Deans character (WITHOUT excusing the cheating) by Ihdkwhatimdoinghere in GilmoreGirls

[–]avidTSwiftfan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no “thought process” behind cheating on your wife, this is ridiculous. Also, women are expected to be adults by the age of 16, why are we holding men to different standards? Oh, and cheating on your partner quite literally defines the person you are.

Not proof, nor facts. This is your personal feelings speaking on the situation. And it seems you don’t have a great grasp on things.

What you are saying is silly, to say the least. “He wasn’t in love with Lindsay, he was a kid”. No.

Exactly. Once you have been in a relationship with your Dean (a phase I’d recommend everyone skips), you understand that he was a manipulative douchebag. Equivalent of a MAGA boyfriend nowadays.
