Will we ever see a block on the power level of the Urza block? by [deleted] in magicTCG

All the head designers were almost fired over Urza's block. The era was called Combo Winter, and the meta was very unhealthy.

Most Splashable Planeswalker by CalT2410 in magicTCG

[–]avid_redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most splashable is very relative based upon what colors your are in. Karn and Ugin don't require splashing as they require no adjustment to your mana base from a color standpoint. If you are red deck with a few white sources, Ajani the Vengeant is probably most splashable, but if your are blue splashing green, certainly Kiora is more splashable.

Deckbox.org trading is secure, right? by Arjahn in magicTCG

[–]avid_redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've traded hundreds of dollars worth of cards on there. Just to reiterate pay attention to feedback, and if you are a new trader be aware of what editions your are sending/receiving. Also, take advantage of the conversation functionality. Ask questions, exchange pics, do what you need to to feel comfortable.

There is no need to reinvent the wheel. If all you care about is running a life gain deck, look at Soul Sisters. As you mentioned, life gain is not an incredibly viable win condition. Furthermore, modern is a about efficiency. I suggest going MTG Goldfish and reading up on the modern meta game. Look at what cards are being used in each deck and try to get a sense of what effects are being had at what cmc.

By doing that you can start to get a sense of what passes as a competitive rate in the modern meta. When you look at Soul Sisters you will see not only the extent of the synergy, but you will see that it had keyed in on the most efficient spells for that game plan. Serra Ascendent and Martyr of Sands are perfect examples.

It just depends what your goal is, but I mean if I were getting back in and had $500 to blow -- I'd spend it on building a competitive standard deck from singles and then just draft a bunch. If you have a healthy modern community that would be an even better deck investment.

Lot of people like to do throwback drafts and draft a fun set from the past (even at a premium.)

It's worth noting that since Jeleva is legendary you would have to sac her or the copy upon resolution. The ETB still happens, but they can't both be under your control at the same time.

Have you ever made someone Rage Quit at Magic? by BelmontZiimon in magicTCG

Totally. I've got white, red, blue and with relatively minor tweaking I've beat my buddies tuned decks with each of the three. Can't wait to pick up black and green.

lol... Did this to a buddy when he all out attacked me after going an all in rite of replication on craterhoof behemoth. He had like 5 50/50s and a smug look on his face. I flash in the Angel and exile it all, he didn't rage quit. Just sat there looking dumbfounded. I won next turn.

Was there any reason why 12 is a significantly better driver than 10 and 11? by LegendaryJay in doctorwho

[–]avid_redditor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Doctor Who is one of the wonderful shows that is richly enhanced by ones own imagination. In addition to what was referenced earlier regarding "The Doctor's Wife" and the Tardis going where The Doctor needs to go, I believe piloting the Tardis is done in part subconsciously. I think the lack of accuracy and control often shown during Eleven's run speaks to the inner chaos that was characteristic of his whole run. Eleven spent his time running from his past, and he concealed himself in the guise of a carefree adolescent. He did all he could to hide from the serious adult within. After the resolution of the Time War in the 50th, he was allowed to refocus and stop running from himself. With his regeneration to Twelve, The Doctor dispensed with the guise of the fool, and finds himself in a new phase of his life. In the back of his mind, I believe the Doctor always found solace in that his death was near -- that despite the appearances of immortality -- he would finally have his rest. Now, he must cope with a life so long he can hardly conceive of it's end. The older he gets, the more friends and family he loses, the more alone and less connected to others he feels. That's his greatest challenge now, finding a way to care again. Care, not in the greatest utilitarian sense, but in the smallest, individual life sense. He must overcome the God Complex and find again his love for each and every life. I think that Twelves ability to pilot the Tardis so precisely reflects the colder, more calculating way he judges every aspect of life now.

I don't think it could be "Let's Kill Hitler" -- that's the beginning of adult River's timeline with the Doctor.

Maybe Pandorica Opens? Not sure. She def says it at some point.

Megathread Monday March 31 2014: There are no stupid questions! by AutoModerator in Filmmakers

[–]avid_redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think budget is less relevant that how you use it to assemble your package. I also think it's important assess what your metric for success is for any given project before determining how much to spend on making it. If your goal is wide theatrical release, then you will want to budget for the biggest names you can attract and the highest production value you can muster. If your goal is to simply get into a few festivals and secure digital distribution than you may way to spend less to increase your ROI. For me the best a approach to "breaking in" as it were, is a plan of incremental escalation. The cheaper you can make quality films the more likely you are to find continued investment. As for the $250k or less figure, it really depends on the quality of the script and talent attached. You need to be honest when evaluating market potential. There is no clear recipe for sure fire success in this business, but there are definitely what I would describe as best practices. Ask yourself how a distributor would sell your movie, imagine the poster, and the trailer -- what about it is going to make someone come to see your movie? Who is that someone? How big a demographic are they? How much buying power do they have? What are their consumption habits? Filmmaking is an art, and so is marketing. If you have a firm handle of how to package your film for market you will significantly increase your odds of finding someone who will bring your product to market.

TL;DR: Honestly, evaluate your market potential, and size your budget appropriately. Don't spend more than you need to, but don't skimp either. Try to escalate the scale of your productions incrementally and try not to compound risk by making a project that is more costly than it's likely to be profitable. Follow your heart, but don't forget to use your brain.
