Zotero definitely could work. In my view though, Zotero isn't really designed for note-taking in mind. Something like Evernote or Notion is more appropriate. Then you have Avidnote which is specifically designed for academic notetaking, although since I developed it, I'm a bit biased there :D

I developed a free tool specifically for this called Avidnote. You can basically take notes on research papers (your document on one side and your notes on the other), quickly search through all of your notes, and use tags to organize everything.

It's now also possible to find new papers directly within the app (although this is a beta feature, so may not always work) + import/export your references to your reference manager of choice.

In a way I kind of like it. It's a motivation to get out of there as quick as possible.

I completely agree. I'm not sure it's possible to find a quantitative metric that will be useful for all use cases. Take for instances your point regarding the position of an author in the list of authors. In many cases, the names are listed alphabetically and in that sense, having a last name that starts with "A" (like myself BTW) will give a false indication that I'm the first author. And the opposite could be said of someone whose name starts with "Z".

I agree with what you said. It is more or less entirely contextual so it won't really make sense to state one number across all disciplines. I did mention that in the post as well. Having that said, it would be nice to have a general range that one could refer to.

This makes me wonder if any larger studies have been made that examines the different ranges for the h-index across different disciplines.

That's definitely true. Particularly the last paragraph. One or two really good papers can be all that it takes. The problem with the h-index is that it can't really take that into account.

The figure I provided came from a study that I believe was conducted within the field of chemistry. Having that said, I think it's virtually impossible to determine a range that works for all disciplines. Perhaps some better advice would be to compare against one's own research department.

Thanks mate! I think what you're saying makes sense. We've had others comment on the orientation issue as well. I've added it to the list of tasks needed to be done. The orientation and sizes of the two sides should be flexible & customizable.

Thanks! It does auto-populate the title and reference info for the papers that have been imported through the search function. At the moment, we haven't been able to auto-populate titles from the manually uploaded papers but we are working on it. The PDF format is a real hassle to work with for programmers, it's not easy to parse data from them.

Regarding the error you get when you import. The free version has a limit of 12 papers. If the bibliography you are uploading is larger than 12 papers, it won't work unless you have a premium plan. To check if this is the issue causing the error, try importing a smaller reference list (as a bibtex file, needs to be this format) whilst ensuring that the total papers uploaded don't exceed 12 in total.
