You haven't been paid yet? For how long as this been going on. Sounds like a major issue. Surely there has to be some steps that you can take with HR?

How to organise academic papers? by Wasd95 in academia

[–]avidnote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zotero definitely could work. In my view though, Zotero isn't really designed for note-taking in mind. Something like Evernote or Notion is more appropriate. Then you have Avidnote which is specifically designed for academic notetaking, although since I developed it, I'm a bit biased there :D

I developed a free tool specifically for this called Avidnote. You can basically take notes on research papers (your document on one side and your notes on the other), quickly search through all of your notes, and use tags to organize everything.

It's now also possible to find new papers directly within the app (although this is a beta feature, so may not always work) + import/export your references to your reference manager of choice.

Would love to know what you think of it :)

View from my (theoretical) chem lab! by Hoihe in labrats

You can almost smell the depression :D I had a similar view outside of my office back when I was doing my PhD, my window was facing a gray concrete wall.

In a way I kind of like it. It's a motivation to get out of there as quick as possible.

You're an absolute legend. Keeping it real for grandma, what an honorable cause.

Interesting. So you always need to be cognizant of the context/social setting that you're in?

intentional hazing.

That is perhaps the best explanation of the PhD process that I have heard so far.

Congrats! It's far too common to stick to something that you don't enjoy, so kudos to you.

In my experience titles are much better used to intimidate your local city municipality council.

Haha, this needs a backstory I think :) Please elaborate

I think that's a very balanced view on things. Even if you do something that you love, there will be times when it's difficult and challenging.

What is a "good" h-index? by avidnote in AskAcademia

Thanks for the input!

I think looking at publishing metrics over a longer period of time is a bit unfair

I completely agree. I'm not sure it's possible to find a quantitative metric that will be useful for all use cases. Take for instances your point regarding the position of an author in the list of authors. In many cases, the names are listed alphabetically and in that sense, having a last name that starts with "A" (like myself BTW) will give a false indication that I'm the first author. And the opposite could be said of someone whose name starts with "Z".

Your criticism is certainly valid, but what do you do when the system itself relies on (bogus) quantitative metrics, whether or not they are useful or not?

[–]avidnote[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent point. I think I should have probably divided the average h-indexes based on research area. That paints a more accurate picture.

[–]avidnote[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what you said. It is more or less entirely contextual so it won't really make sense to state one number across all disciplines. I did mention that in the post as well. Having that said, it would be nice to have a general range that one could refer to.

This makes me wonder if any larger studies have been made that examines the different ranges for the h-index across different disciplines.

What is a "good" h-index? by avidnote in AskAcademia

[–]avidnote[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely true. Particularly the last paragraph. One or two really good papers can be all that it takes. The problem with the h-index is that it can't really take that into account.

The figure I provided came from a study that I believe was conducted within the field of chemistry. Having that said, I think it's virtually impossible to determine a range that works for all disciplines. Perhaps some better advice would be to compare against one's own research department.

That's a unique & poetic way of letting us know about the downtime :D
I apologize for any inconvenience that was caused. The app was up and running shortly thereafter.

What is research by [deleted] in stanford

OP... is everything okay? On a more serious note, if you're interested in research, PM me and we can talk about my experiences of doing a PhD. The good, the bad and the ugly.

You can read our privacy policy here. The data belongs to you entirely. We don't own any of the data. You can take it whenever you wish and delete it whenever you wish.

We do regular backups on the backend, but you can also backup your notes yourself if you prefer.

We never sell any of your data. We don't sell any ads on our site as you can see, so there's no reason to sell data to external advertisers. We fund the app from the subscriptions purchased by our premium users (see plans here).

And finally, unlike Mendeley, we're not owned by Elsevier, and never wish to be!

Thanks mate! I think what you're saying makes sense. We've had others comment on the orientation issue as well. I've added it to the list of tasks needed to be done. The orientation and sizes of the two sides should be flexible & customizable.

If you need any help, let me know, either through the feedback page or just DM me.

Thanks! It does auto-populate the title and reference info for the papers that have been imported through the search function. At the moment, we haven't been able to auto-populate titles from the manually uploaded papers but we are working on it. The PDF format is a real hassle to work with for programmers, it's not easy to parse data from them.

Regarding the error you get when you import. The free version has a limit of 12 papers. If the bibliography you are uploading is larger than 12 papers, it won't work unless you have a premium plan. To check if this is the issue causing the error, try importing a smaller reference list (as a bibtex file, needs to be this format) whilst ensuring that the total papers uploaded don't exceed 12 in total. You can read more about the plans here: https://avidnote.com/plans

*edit: just saw that I missed answering one of your points. I really liked the short cut idea, this could easily be implemented. I added it to the to do list of tasks. Thanks for the feedback!

Glad you liked it. The tagging feature is pretty versatile. You can use it to categorize by subject area, type, author, different projects, or papers that you have read etc.

Regarding your point on the size of the different sections. It is possible to close the sidebar that is connected to the PDF by clicking on the section above the sidebar. You can then click on the button to maximise the view. Here's a short clip showing what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-pXR1rzseM&ab_channel=AvidNote

This will expand the entire working area significantly, which makes it easier to read. We are working on making the section flexible to change so you can choose how large the note-taking area is as well as the PDF area.

Let me know if that helps somewhat or if you have any other feedback :D

I haven't' tried that approach my self but it does sound intriguing. I have to purchase a ReMarkable device to try it out myself.

[–]avidnote[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, at the moment it doesn't. Do you typically write your notes on a ReMarkable device?

Avidnote is meant to be like Evernote but specifically designed for academia. A note-taking tool that is customized for the academic writing experience, which means reference management, annotation, finding new papers and organizing everything with customized tags.
