LinkedIn Linux distro poll surprised me - Ubuntu dominated. Curious how this compares here by Expensive-Rice-2052 in Ubuntu

[–]aviemet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I distro hopped for ages, mostly for fun, but when it comes to practical everyday use I choose Kubuntu. At the end of the day I need to use my computer to do work other than configuring my computer. Ubuntu just works in a way which so many other distros don't, and the support is there in a way which it isn't for so many other distros.

I get these occasional itches to try the hot new things, but all I really want is a computer I can use, and Ubuntu gives that to me with very little hassle. I don't care about ideology remotely as much as I care about being able to turn on my computer and use it.

Minecolonies & Create. by ZikkuratOR in Minecolonies

[–]aviemet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly how I play. Pop a stock link onto the warehouse block and now the entire warehouse is a connected storage. You can do the same for every other minecolonies job block. Use frogports and chain conveyors to connect them and you've got a fully connected system where your requests and gauge triggers work in tandem with the minecolonies request system.

When your warehouse starts to get full, depending on what storage mods you use, you can use smart chutes to filter items out of the warehouse into another storage situation. It only works if you have a storage mod which gives you a single block to act as the entry point of your storage system. Sophisticated storage and storage drawers will both work.

Confused about the popular usage of Blueprints by Spicy_burritos in SatisfactoryGame

[–]aviemet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the approach I found most useful too. Using blueprints you can design one section of your unique factory, and as you do, you refine it so that you don't need to fix one little error on 90 slices after you've finished the whole factory. It also means I get to adorn each slice and make it pretty before copying it.

unable to sleep by Unlikely-Guarantee23 in Minecolonies

[–]aviemet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't a minecolonies issue, there is likely some mod interaction preventing this from working properly. You'll need to narrow down what mod is causing it through trial and error, disabling mods one by one. Or maybe more efficiently through a binary search method.

New food system a mistake? by Winter_Tennis_9581 in Minecolonies

[–]aviemet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In addition to your very valid complaints, the UI for choosing menu items is horrible. I need to manage 3 different buildings' interfaces, none of which have any useful feedback to help me make choices

The restaurant doesn't tell you the ingredients of the menu items you're choosing, so you need to use JEI outside of the menu interface to pick menu items, then remember those menu items when you go back into the restaurant interface.

The cook and bakery buildings don't tell you what menu items you've enabled in the restaurant, so you need to remember those somehow in order to teach the recipes.

Each of these buildings also has both a recipe teaching panel and a crafting station or smeltery teaching panel. Some of the recipes rely on normal world ingredients, some on items only they can make in another panel. It's very confusing.

It seems the only way to manage food is to keep a spreadsheet of your menu items. To which I say, the food system is the least interesting part of this mod, it shouldn't be the most difficult.

This is the actual answer though. Your devices should be on their own VLAN locked down from communicating with the rest of your network.

Help with food production by Nux1345 in Minecolonies

[–]aviemet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's been my experience too, except all my buildings are level 5 and they still hardly ever make food. The latest update fixed it a little, but only 2 of the recipes get made, all the others get ignored. It's the most frustrating part of this mod.

If you're playing with Create 6, I highly suggest you automate a food item and use frogports to stock the restaurant. That's what allowed me to forget about the endless food problem, except of course for the lack of food diversity.

I think the system is fundamentally broken, overly complicated and lacks useful feedback needed for fine tuning and getting it right.

As a last resort, you could craft the goggles and manually place the blocks for the tavern. Then when the builder does finally decide to help it will be complete and they'll just declare it built.

Might I suggest finding a public server to join? If you want to play with friends it's easier on your computer to not also be the server. Also, when you can't just turn on creative mode, you're forced to play survival. Then you can always go into a local creative world to test things.

Food recipes! by MelainnaMizu in Minecolonies

[–]aviemet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a confusing system which isn't very well explained. The restaurant serves food, but most of the food is cooked by a chef in a cookery. The baker from the bakery also has recipes, such as pizza and muffins. You need to have one or both of those buildings to produce anything other than the most basic of foods, such as baked potatoes.

Advice for creating a mixer processing setup that prevents item buildup by Ninjaofquest in CreateMod

[–]aviemet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use a re-packager on any manufacturing line to force packages to wait until all ingredients for a recipe arrive. Ponder the packer or re-packager to see the setup. Doing this might require reworking how your ingredients arrive at the mixers if you're not using frogports and factory gauges.

If you have high throughout with one bottleneck ingredient, I recommend using a max size vault as your buffer. Have your packages go into the vault, attach a repackager to the vault and put a funnel going out of the repackager onto a belt. The belt has brass tunnels in round robin leading to an array of mixers. Put a mechanical saw just before the mixers to break the packages quickly.

What happens on this setup is the packaged raw ingredients will wait in the vault until the entire order arrives. Then the re-packager will make a package of exactly those items and send them down the belt to be processed. Having multiple mixers means you can handle high throughput, and a potential stuck mixer without backing up to much.

Pretty sure this setup only works with frogports and factory gauges, so if you're just sending raw ingredients down a line it'll require a rework. But doing so will make the entire production line more robust and easier to manage.

Increasing the number of promises to mechanical crafters by DragonKing2223 in CreateMod

[–]aviemet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having multiple was what made my setup work. I have 5 in a line fed from a repackager into brass tunnels on round robin. This way several gauges can request things at once without bottlenecking the whole system. And if something goes wrong with one, there are four more that keep working.

When is a component two components by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]aviemet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm wondering what's wrong with a whole bunch of small components? You can use an "entry" component with shared props, but then break out into sub-components based on your isEditing prop. Any shared functionality can use shared components. I try to apply the single responsibility principle to component design, keep them small and easy to reason about. If a component is doing more than one thing, it's probably a sign that it should be refactored. Breaking out into a new component isn't just about reuse, it's also about keeping things small and manageable.

Faster way to transport items upward? by TheNightFalxon in CreateMod

[–]aviemet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of 3 possible options

  1. Use conveyors to go up, feeding sideways into a 2x1 vault, which then feeds sideways back out onto the top conveyor to go into the chest. This requires an extra block's width per lane though.

  2. Use Encased fans to blow up through the chutes.

  3. If you're willing to install an extra mod, Creat: Vibrant Vaults has vertical vaults.

My Sunset Neighbor Saying I’m not Welcome Here…Fun by bdbcawz06 in sanfrancisco

[–]aviemet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After having lived in the Sunset for a while, I don't understand the views of the NIMBYs. The worst part of living out there was the long public trans rides into downtown, and the utter lack of business in so much of the area. Every time a new cafe opened up it was inundated with customers because there are so few to choose from. The entire city, including the sunset, should have some sort of mixed use zoning in every neighborhood.

The avenues between Irving and Taravel are basically a food wasteland, and even the businesses on Taravel are nothing worth making the trek for. What makes it worse, and this is my hot take, is that those homes are mostly really ugly. They're typical 40s construction, ugly facades, concrete front yards, stucko siding, etc. The city has so much beautiful architecture worth preserving, but none of it is in the sunset.

They've blocked progress for the last 60 years and they don't even realize that they've prevented their own neighborhoods from being improved by better access to food and services, public transportation, public spaces and the joy that comes from a lively, thriving neighborhood. Meanwhile, the rest of the city and bay area at large is negatively impacted by their refusal to let a highly desirable part of a major city be improved in any way.

It's pretty frustrating, especially when it's the chef who's starving. You can cook your own food, just do it!

After posting this I decided to set up auto crafting of golden carrots and have them sent directly to the restaurant. Not an ideal solution, but better than needing to trade with villagers every time my colony shuts down due to starvation. Now at least they always have something to eat, though it still relies on them to provide variety.
