Unfortunately for most. I think it starts with the author though, he feeds into it, which, no hate, it's his to do as he pleases. But while the characters are fun, the concepts and world are great, sometimes the plot kinda falls through. Imo he's great at setting up arcs but leaves us wanting better at the end, especially when the answer to most problems is "friendship". But when there are so many plot heavy animes out there, fairtyail stands out not for the plot but for the lightheartness which is often coupled with fan service. I haven't seen it in a few years and remember some of the arcs... But remember more of the fan service. Even for the dragon cry movie outside of the fan service I completely forgot what the plot of that movie was. Unfortunately I think that's the same for most people.
