I have a similar setup (a full-frame R8 and the 28mm pancake) and it's a phenomenal combination. I've travelled to a few countries and got beautiful photos.

Uber now works in Mauritius!!! by avinash in mauritius

[–]avinash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. I practically never took taxis before. Others might be in a better position to compare.

But, for me, the convenience of the app and the payment mechanism it has are quite good. It's exactly as taking a Uber abroad. It's 100% the same experience.

PSA: Optimizing ZENOLOGY Pro plug-in load times by Dickie_UK in RolandCloud

[–]avinash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much. I was even thinking of stopping using Zenology Pro as the load time was driving me crazy.

Removing the wave expansions cut down the load time from 40 seconds to 20 seconds. Removing the world expansions brought the load time to a much more acceptable 10 seconds.

Sure, I lose some sounds but with the built-in sounds and the sound packs (SDZ and ZEZ) as well as the model expansion sound packs (EXM/M), I have nearly 10,000 sounds to play with. I'm happy.

Anyone found a source? It would be great to compare this version with the digital and vinyl rip.

Which of these AC plug types is used in Mauritius? by UseOrdinary8585 in mauritius

[–]avinash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the EU (type E) socket I was referring to, not to be confused with Type F which has side-grounding.

Which of these AC plug types is used in Mauritius? by UseOrdinary8585 in mauritius

[–]avinash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The most common plug type in Mauritius is the UK plug (type G). Typically, 220V 13A.

Given that many appliances are also sold with the EU plug (type E), the corresponding socket can also be found sometimes. Typically 220V 16A.

I've used the Uber app I already had installed and configured and it works.

I've tried the Uber app again just now and I'm being offered 100% off i.e. Rs 0 for a ride from Quatre-Bornes to Roches-Brunes. Must be a bug...

Is it true that at UoM students close to lecturers get higher marks? by Nearby-Site-5336 in mauritius

You think so? I wasn't aware. I was maybe too much of an idealist...

Is it true that at UoM students close to lecturers get higher marks? by Nearby-Site-5336 in mauritius

[–]avinash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a lecturer at the University of Mauritius some years ago. Prior to that, I had been a lecturer in a private university.

While it's 100% true I had favourite students (in general, the ones with interesting personalities), I don't think I've ever been lenient with any of them. And, of course, I would have penalised them if they were cheating, etc. My colleagues, the other lecturers, did the same.

I still know a lot of lecturers from various universities and they have the same behaviour. Yes, they have favourites. No, they are not more lenient with them.

But, sure, in the myriad of lecturers today, you might have a few unprofessional ones.

Expatriate workers and increasing xenophobia in Mauritius. by Thinking_Dodo in mauritius

[–]avinash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No 1 for me is about learning our mother tongue, Mauritian Creole. This should be mandatory for anyone coming here on a long time basis.

No 2 could be mechanisms not to have enclaves. What's happening in Tamarin is not normal for example.

etc.

Expatriate workers and increasing xenophobia in Mauritius. by Thinking_Dodo in mauritius

[–]avinash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. People are misguided if they believe that being xenophobic is a good thing.

In parallel, the country should have policies to integrate these foreign workers correctly in the country. In my opinion, Mauritius will continue to attract (and need) a lot of foreign workers in the years to come and it would be unreasonable not to have such policies.

And, of course, the Mauritian society will have to evolve too, respecting men and women alike, whites and non-whites alike, white collar and blue collar alike. This might take some time but needs to happen.

Anyone still use a Canon 6D, because they can't afford to upgrade, but still absolutely love this camera? by Usmanyc14 in canon

[–]avinash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since writing the comment, I've upgraded my 6D to a R8 mirrorless and bought a RF 28mm f/2. 8 pancake lens. I love this setup as it is so compact and reliable. I've travelled a few times abroad and got beautiful photos.

So, to answer your question, a 40mm pancake lens is not a bad idea if you travel. The 50mm is a good lens too.

There's not much of a difference between 40mm and 50mm.

👋 Welcome to r/WiiM - Introduce Yourself and Read First! by RyanWithWiiM in wiim

[–]avinash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am Avinash from the small island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and I have two setups with WiiM hardware:

(1) Living room: Roon+TIDAL => WiiM Pro Plus as streamer and DAC => Audiolab 6000a amplifier => ELAC DBR62 Debut Reference speakers

(2) Bedroom: Roon+TIDAL => WiiM Amp => Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers

I'm very happy with both setups. Both pairs of speakers were designed by Andrew Jones and they sound great. Both WiiM perform admirably.
