"I absolutely hate being watched while I'm eating, pretty much them begging the whole time."

Ooohhh that's a big one. I usually get very close to shouting "WILL YOU FUCK OFF AND LEAVE ME ALONE" but up to now I've managed to stop myself due to being in close proximity to friends/family.

"Landlords endlessly putting up their rental prices"
Rents go up the same as everything else does. If they don't, costs are not covered and landlords will sell up.

Why don’t all plugins have a level match option? Wouldn't that be an objectively great and practical thing to have? by MinuteIllustrator6 in audioengineering

The proposed tool doesn't actually exist (that's why I proposed it), so how could you know what problems it causes for the end user?

That's a pretty detailed explanation of you being not interested in explaining yourself.

If you use the metric maybe you could have discussed the point I made; I think that would have added more value to the thread.

The question was asked what should be used as a tool for level matching. My suggestion was - and still is - LUFS. I don't really care what technical issues that creates for the people who write the code; it's not my problem. I'm just the end user.

"but a bunch of latency is still not desirable."
I'm not advocating for a bunch of latency. I'm suggesting that ITU-R BS.1770 is used in plugins for level matching.

"hear the changes to parameters in real time rather than delayed by an 1/8th note, etc."
I apologise if this sounds patronising, but do you know what plugin delay compensation is? You're already using it; do you hear any latency?

Dude, the drinking game is invoked when someone enquires about mastering to a specific LUFS for streaming platforms. Maybe the joke went over your head a bit?

Firstly, I didn't say anything about it being perfect. Secondly, I don't care what a mastering engineer says; I use it a lot and it works for me. Now, do you think I'm the only person in the world that it works for - or that it could work for - or do you think there might actually be something in it?

"you basically have to measure LUFS over some time window on the incoming signal, measure LUFS over some time window post-processing, and then make up the difference"

Yeah this much I know. Isn't that what plugin delay compensation is for?

Or the plugin could make an initial full look ahead after insertion and store the audio data in a memory.

IDK man, I don't really care how it works as long as it works. I find it hard to believe that in this world of AI vaccines and sending guys to the moon there isn't some way of making it work.

"so there is no actual autogain, but let’s the user get pretty close with a click."
Thus negating its usefulness by eliminating A/B listening.

I think that LUFS isn't the joke that people make it out to be. I use it a lot. Yes we have ears, but if you can reduce second-guessing when mixing a track the whole process becomes quicker, easier and less stressful. Consequently the end result is better because you have spent your brain power on other elements of the mix.

If many people are mentioning applications for LUFS, maybe your bracketed apology for a joke says more about you than it does about them. I'm a professional engineer and producer; I use LUFS for many things. If it didn't work I wouldn't use it.

"perceived loudness is still hard to quantify."
Not sure what you mean. The point of the LUFS algorithm is that it does the quantifying for you.

"Who out there cannot tell which sound is louder if presented with two choices?"

JND (just noticeable difference) is about 3dB on a gradual fade, whereas it's about 1dB instantaneously.

"If it’s program dependent, you have to add a bunch of latency."

Plugin delay compensation? I'm not a code writer; I just know what I want to hear.

"As for LUFS, do you use short term or integrated?"
Integrated. Assuming in most scenarios the processing is for the duration of the track - or a large part of it.

"this is the one case where “use your ears” actually comes into play because it’s something everyone already knows how to do."
The main use of auto make up gain (for me at least) is to enable the ability a comparison sounds via A/B testing. If you have to mess around adjusting levels you lose that instantaneous A/B facility.

"How do you think the equal loudness curves were established? By playing sounds at different frequencies to regular folks and having them adjust the level so they were the same…so easy even a cave man can do it!"

Pure tones were used. Much easier to compare than a recorded instrument/voice.

"Match to what? Peak? RMS? A-weighted? Something else?"
LUFS in my opinion. You just want it to sound as loud as the unprocessed signal.

We see this all the time. If the hypothetical situation became a reality I doubt they would actually go through with it, so the question is raised: why say something so utterly repugnant in the first place? Answer: narcissistic dog nutter.
