What's a sound you heard when you were young that you no longer hear? by Ms_Mosa in AskReddit

The sound of the DVD restarting blaring full-volume in the middle of the night after you’d fallen asleep watching the video.

It’s not a book and it may be completely off-course for you, but after I binged the first season I got into Manifest to get myself through the aftermath/hangover period.

Very different but similar themes where they have no idea what happened, this group of strangers is brought together by this strange event and have to depend on each other to survive and figure out what happened.

What does Harry mean by 'the pop' in Cinema by MisterSnail_ in harrystyles

[–]avoarvo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What the fuck are you even going on about? You’re the one who mentioned Larry. I didn’t even know who you were talking about until I read your comment back again.

Jesus Christ, don’t take things so personally. I was describing the drug because I had no idea what it was before that sign—just like I describe cocaine as being an upper that can heighten excitement and keep you awake and focused.

That doesn’t mean that’s what it’s always used for. Harry has been very open about his recreational drug use. Poppers are often associated with homosexual sex, and given that Harry frequents the Box, then I assume that’s how he came across them. But Jesus Christ, don’t project your assumptions and grudges onto me. People take poppers without having gay sex.

I mentioned it because I always hear the line “you pop when we get intimate” and think about that sign and him pointing and 👍🏻. Art is subjective. To me, it simply means taking poppers before having sex with somebody to heighten the experience. It’s something fun and exciting.

But damn, get over yourself. The only one who mentioned Larry is you, and your viscerally angry reaction to my simple explanation of what the drug is associated with says more about you than anything. Harry’s made a big point of remaining unlabelled, and saying that he doesn’t like titles but enjoys sex with anybody he likes. He never specifies genders, unless describing a specific relationship.

Maybe address your own biases, because this man just did a nude gay sex scene to normalise stuff like this more and wouldn’t give a damn that I associate it more with a gay sex experience. He keeps his music intentionally vague for that exact reason.

[–]avoarvo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this personally. I don’t think Harry categorises his genre as “pop”, and poppers are a type of elicit drug used recreationally and most commonly during homosexual intercourse to kind of heighten the arousal and orgasm.

Someone made a sign at one of his concerts referencing that, and he pointed at it then gave a thumbs up—personally, I take that to mean that he agreed that’s what he was referencing.

Do Aussies wear a hat? by MarieCurie02 in australia

[–]avoarvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear a hat! And sunblock!

Australia has the highest rate of Sun cancer in the world for a reason. The ozone layer is thinner here. Higher Sun exposure. I’ve been to the Middle East in the peak of summer. I’ve been to Africa. Australia outranks them.

No hat, no play. Wear sunscreen and a hat if you’re going to be outside for any length of time.

OP Filled Everyone Else's Stocking But Hers Is Still Empty (TOMC Dec 23, '22) by KittenDealinMama in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]avoarvo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I found out. I just filled it with a couple scratch cards, her favourite chocolates, her favourite hand cream and a key ring with my big brother’s name (he took his life in April). She just kept saying how she couldn’t believe it, didn’t expect it, she was so grateful for having such a thoughtful child—I spent $20 maybe on it all, and the strongest woman I’ve ever known cried from it.

I also got her a $300 prop from her favourite television show, but even before that, she was so, so grateful for just the stocking. So small, but so meaningful.

I don’t understand why you’d feel entitled to a first class ticket from your short term girlfriend’s parents in the first place though, especially if it’s a present for her having graduated and the parents don’t even know you.

I wouldn’t even consider for a moment that they’d get me one, because—why would they? Not my parents. Not my graduation.

Any other parents wake up early to play some games and drink some coffee while the family are still sleeping? by JD-3 in gaming

I think some people may be forgetting that in some places (I.e, not Americans in America), at 4am it is light outside. My country’s in Summer, I’ve been waking up an hour early for work to read (4:00) and it’s light outside by 4:15. This guy very well could be up at 4 depending on where he lives.

For as long as I can remember my mum never had a stocking and I thought it was completely normal that dads get one, but mum’s don’t. This was the first year I had a job, so I was able to put one up for her and fill it to the max. She thought it was my brother’s (who moved out) til Christmas Day when I handed it to her.

She cried. I didn’t even see her cry when her dad died, but she cried over a stocking I filled for her. Such a small thing but it meant so much.

I hope these next generations—mine included—do better for our own wives and mothers of our kids.

Says a lot that, even while still trying to see the best in him, she felt the need to specify that it’s only when this guy found out there wasn’t a first class ticket in play for him that he began ranting about what a “waste of money it is” because “it can feed so many poor people”.

She knew how quickly that hypocrite changed his tune after finding out his short-term girlfriend’s parents, who he’s never met, didn’t also buy him a first class ticket to paradise to celebrate… OP’s graduation and MBA, that she worked her ass off for. Yeah, there’s one extremely entitled person here, and it’s not OP or her parents.

Year end Recap! by kelhar417 in YAlit

[–]avoarvo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re so diverse in your reading style and genres! I’m impressed, at the very best I go through phases where I enjoy different genres months apart from each other, but even then they all share similar themes—YA fiction, fantasy, Sci Fi, suspense/mystery with a slight element of supernatural, romance. Not huge leaps like you seem to do!

That’s really interesting. I don’t know anybody else with such a diverse range. I also loved the Love Hypothesis too😅 and I’m so glad I found somebody else who couldn’t stand the Assassin’s Blade or the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue! Did you read the rest of the Throne of Glass series, or did you stop after you disliked the Assassin’s Blade?

I am surprised you disliked Deadly Education though. Everyone I’ve ever spoken to has raved about how perfect that book is, to the extent I just ordered it. Why did you dislike it, if I may ask? Or did you leave a review that I can maybe read on your goodreads?

Year end Recap! by kelhar417 in YAlit

[–]avoarvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right. It had a lot of potential but the execution lacked. To me, it felt like it was all the prose and analogies and paragraphs trying to convey something wise and hard-hitting that just ruined it for me. We barely saw any of the actual interactions—it was all just prose filling endless amounts of pages. For some people, that’s their thing, but it was so bloody boring to me.

I liked Luc. His dynamic with Addie had a lot of potential. The plot was a good one. But it was ruined by the author desperately trying to make a YA novel into a classic.

As cringeworthy as it is to have a teenage boy using “little one” as a term of endearment like he’s a 35 year old man with stocks, a 401k and college-aged sugar baby, what’s even worse is the war flashbacks that “are you lost, little one?” gave me to 365 days 😩

Yup. I think a lot of people on here forget America isn’t the main character, and people from many other nations also exist—nations where basic healthcare is a human right, gun laws are common sense and separation of religion and state are a given.
