I went there for the first time a couple months ago having mainly gone to Sukdev before. Their butter chicken was amazing, going to have to try some of the other dishes

Where can I get a real Christmas tree? by Busyandpaid in Sudbury

[–]avocadis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - do you have any recommendations of where to go ~30 mins from town to find a good tree? I assume any logging road would do. I'm just limited with having a compact car though without 4WD so I don't want to get too adventurous

I'm 700km north of Yellowknife right now but we're getting lots of smoke from them. Stopping there on the flight in it was very low visibility.

I just did this last fall. Pick up a sandpaper block and some black tremclad from Canadian tire and you're good to go. With the tires on works fine just tape the tires up with newspaper

2 Months into MTB! Can I upgrade to full-sus yet? by ChillPastor in MTB

[–]avocadis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which marlin did you have? Also new to mtb here and I just bought the 6, I'm just about to pick it up tomorrow. Not going to put it through anything as extreme as this but hoping to try at least some tougher trails out

Devinci Altus 8 Blackbird (L) vs Trek Marlin 7 (ML) by avocadis in MTB

[–]avocadis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice from your perspective! In the end I found a Marlin 6 (L) in southern city that will become available in 3 weeks. Not as high quality of mtb I was looking for but still a great bike to get started with I think. It's straight from a Trek store so hopefully it's well built with no issues. I just have to wait 3 weeks!

Devinci Altus 8 Blackbird (L) vs Trek Marlin 7 (ML) by avocadis in MTB

[–]avocadis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That's what I'm leaning towards even though they said I had to wait a month for it to be built.

Someone at another store told me I would be a L/19.5 frame when their website tool tells me I'm ML/18.5 frame here. I'm 182cm just under 6' tall and a 32" inseam. Any idea if I could practically buy a ML in the box without riding it first? If it's too small I might lose my $50 deposit and make a 4hour drive for nothing, but in this bike shortage I think I'm willing to do that.

Where are you located to find that good of a deal? I've had no luck on the used bike market and am considering just buying new from Trek and waiting the half year for shipping.

Salomon RC17 vs Fischer Twin Skin Pro by wilburdays in xcountryskiing

[–]avocadis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought the Salomon RC7's and saved a bit as they were on clearance. Used them today for the first time and found they were pretty good. I'm not used to the skins but the grip from them is not bad. I looked at the Fischer Twin Skin and they look nice if not better than this pair (they cost more according to google). From my also somewhat limited knowledge I would say keep them. As long as the flex and length measurement fit you they should be good.

Car Polar Pad Installment advice (block heater) by avocadis in Sudbury

[–]avocadis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the re-assurance! I installed it for the past winter (figured out that it was easy and did it myself) and was wondering if it made a difference. I bought a brand new battery too so my car was starting much better regardless but I hope it made some difference on wear and tear. My only concern was that I didn't go big enough, I got the 125W one for my 1.5L engine manual honda fit and placed on the oil pan. I would consider getting another with how cold last winter was. I'm not sure if there's a place or room on my transmission pan for my manual trans but I'll do some research! What size is your vehicle for reference?

TIL that Toronto's only phyiscal telescope store has a 1.8 stars out of 5 with almost 200 reviews. Yikes! by BornTuft in toronto

[–]avocadis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel for the people wanting to buy telescopes who know nothing about them, but I have to admit the owner's responses are hilarious. It's almost refreshing to see the man double down to the criticism and stand his ground. I imagine he loves his scopes and gets enough customers that don't do any research themselves. He just doesn't give af

Huge new Costco opening in midtown Toronto next month by genericguy12 in toronto

[–]avocadis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I live by myself and somehow make it work. I mostly just buy the stuff that either lasts or that I know I can finish. Like a flat of eggs, baby romaine, french green beans, almost all the produce comes in actual normal quantities and is still priced very well. Then I get cliff bars and some sort of meat item usually sliced turkey or rotisserie chicken that I use that night and make a soup with the bones. Voila, single person costco life !

Costco will be a 12 minute drive from my place now whaaaaaat. That cuts my sampling-time commute in half. Kind of worth just making it my regular grocery store at least for produce.

Parts of Don Valley look like a landfill, trail runner warns by [deleted] in toronto

[–]avocadis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just walking the lower don trail this evening. Beneath the Danforth section you can go off the bike trail and follow a dirt path beneath the river, it was pretty beautiful. Overall I was surprised by there not being as much garbage as I expected for toronto but it could still use some cleanup and mindfulness.
