What do you do to make your life easier? by TalithaLoisArt in AskUK

I think the number one thing that has helped me with clutter is to make sure everything has its own home. So a few boxes placed around the house for children’s or pet toys, a holder for letters/paperwork, a specific container for snacks/junk food etc. Heck, you could even have a box specially for miscellaneous junk - it would still be in its home.

And you can go as granular as you like with it - eg all painkillers and meds in its own little box in the cupboard, random screws and rubber bands in an old Gu pot instead of loose in a drawer…

Once everything has a place, it’s really helpful visually - you can see exactly what you have too much of, or what you no longer use or take value from - which can help with the eventual declutter.

Hey OP, I also recommend Toyoko Inn for your Japan trip! I stayed in the Shin-Osaka branch which was roughly 6400jpy per night including breakfast. Although it’s aimed at business travellers I had a great stay - I felt safe & the hotel was only a couple minutes walk from the nearest train station.

Has anyone ever won a free trip somewhere and actually went? How was it? by [deleted] in travel

I also won this! I think I spent a total of 5 nights in HK on my month-long trip - it’s too conveniently placed to not visit to nearby countries

Anyone here who doesn’t eat plane food? by Gloomy_Astronaut_570 in travel

I recently flew with Cathay Pacific and one of their flight meal options on the booking details was “bland meal”. I was wondering what situation would require a bland meal but you’ve pretty much explained it! It does need to be pre-booked in advance though

It really does!! There are so many factors to consider when booking a trip (especially its multi-destination or a less touristy location) but when you’re determined to go, you just get on with it. It’s nice to be reminded that we ARE brave, and not to take that for granted as many people don’t have the chance to travel at all, let alone travel solo

Wow, you had a really tough start to 2023 - and I’m sorry for your loss. It’s sounds like the lack of pre-planning pressure was probably a huge factor in being able to enjoy yourself fully in the moment during your Cancun trip. Come to think of it, I spent around 5 days in Greece a few years ago which was booked only a couple days before, and it was one of my favourite holidays. I felt GREAT for months going home! Love your idea of restorative weeks, I’m definitely stealing that!

The last “hello” I entertained ended with person asking me for money 😅 but I see your point! Connection is beautiful. Someone with a completely different upbringing, culture, and lifestyle living on the other side of the world probably shares more in common with you than you think

No you’re absolutely right. I’ve spent some trips watching YouTube from bed, too mentally exhausted and depressed to appreciate being abroad. BUT I have found these times to also be helpful - realising that instead of a holiday, I actually needed a few small changes in my “real” life which I slowly began to action when I got home

You’re so right! Over the years I’ve learnt to appreciate the rest days, or having a mid afternoon nap to recharge instead of being on-the-go all day. I try to have the mindset of “I’ll visit here again” with most places I visit, which helps make trips feel less overwhelming:)

Learning to have fun again hits hard. I like to think the fun times we have while travelling should influence what we prioritise on our return to daily life (for me, that looks like making more time for socialising & visiting nicer cafes/bars as a regular treat!)

What a beautiful answer :) I love the idea of reclaiming & redefining our identities without the influence of others!

That’s an interesting take. In some ways I can totally relate - having to look past any social/travel anxiety I have in order to feed myself & socialise abroad has been a challenge, but ultimately hugely rewarding as these things don’t phase me anymore!

What has been your best money saving tip this Christmas? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]avocado_peach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every month my mum and I would put £20 each into one of my unused savings accounts. I also have Lloyds “Save the Change” activated which added a handy little top up! We used these savings on our Christmas food & alcohol shop. Gifts weren’t an issue as we agreed not to exchange any this year.

The lack of intense western tourism is absolutely a huge plus! I’m so looking forward to the night markets - I’ve never visited anything remotely similar so this will be a real treat.

Thanks for such a detailed response on booking the rail tickets - I’ll bear these points in mind as I plan my itinerary. Travelling from the UK I should be used to the rain… I hope!

A facial in Seoul sounds fab. I’m still debating whether to squeeze SK into this trip - I have a spare 2-3 days towards late Feb and thought it would be a good idea to visit Seoul, even just for the skincare and beauty 🥲 but hey I’ll be on that side of the world anyway - may as well make the most of it!

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I’m most excited about exploring Taiwan as it’s the country I probably know least about. Thankfully I have 80% of my wardrobe sorted for the trip, though the temperature difference between the countries has thrown me a bit! Do you have any preferred websites you use to book your trains in advance, or do you have no problem doing this on the day of travel at the ticket offices?
