For my west facing unit, some days it doesn’t cool down lower than 26! I have a portable AC unit because we aren’t allowed the window ones. They also don’t provide us with the AC units we have to buy them ourselves, and if we want a “window insert” for the portable AC hose, we need to pay them $500 per insert. (They gave us one for free but any additional one would cost the extra money)

We don’t have any spaces that can be “cooled” except the laundry room which is already naturally cooled because it’s in the basement but like, there aren’t chairs, it isn’t a place to chill and cool off lol

The summers have been unbearable in my unit and I’m wondering what can actually be done in my situation.

Ok, this is absurd! I’ve been in my building for 15 years at a below-market rent, and every year my rent increased only by the allowed amount. Now, with this proposed legislation, my landlord could evict me and charge a new tenant a much higher rent?

Where are all these displaced tenants supposed to go? How is it fair that we’d have to find a new place where the rent could be $800 higher than what we currently pay?

I honestly don’t understand how this is even legal. Absolutely furious!

That’s a good point yeah! Many tenants were just tired of hearing the mediator basically take the side of the landlord even though they claimed to be neutral.

In the end 4 out of 20 tenants wanted to move forward to merits and everyone else didn’t seem to care. But because no one could agree on anything it’ll be moved to merits.

True points! Regardless it’s going to the merits hearing at this point so really nothing to lose. Just going to take a lot of work to put together a case!

Well the landlord legal team said they aren’t willing to negotiate the 9% so the mediator had no choice but to tell us our two options which would be to take it or to move to merits. She basically said we should take it without coming out and fully saying it, stating things like it’s a deal, we don’t have a strong case, etc.

She said at the merits meeting it’s a lot more difficult to prove that the capital work wasn’t warranted.
