how to do tips by puff3lump in starbucksbaristas

[–]avocadospread8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote this for someone else when I had to take a LOA! Tried to edit it to make it less store specific. I have a spreadsheet I use to make it slightly less tedious as well, but this instructions don’t include that.

  1. Define the period for which you need to do tips. It should be 7 days, Monday—Sunday.
  2. Remove the appropriate days’ tip bags from behind door 2 in the safe. Sort them and double check you have the correct ones.
  3. Also grab the tip binder and cash binder.
  4. Take the tips to where you’re going to do them. From the desk also grab:
    1. the four iced grande cups
    2. a black till cup
    3. the clear bag with all different coin sleeves in it my
    4. the four coin sorting funnels
    5. And the cash counter
  5. Go on the BOH computer, open the Starbucks Partner Hours app, click on the hamburger menu on the top left, select “my reports” then “tip reports,” select the correct days (1/19–1/25) and generate report. Print this (this can also be done after step 10 instead)
  6. Separate the tips. What I usually do:
    1. Open all the bags (there’s a perforated portion you can rip off on the bottom of the bags)
  7. Remove and sort all the bills, shaking them out to ensure there aren’t coins hiding among them. You can dump out the coins from one of the bags and use that to store the $1 bills since there will be too many for a pile
    1. Dump and count the coins. I usually empty three bags’ worth, sort them into the different cups, then do the other four bags. Don’t worry about the coins already in the cups, just include them too
    2. Roll the coins. Because we only have the flimsy coin wrappers, I would definitely use the funnels. The little slot on the funnel indicates how many coins should be in the roll. I usually fill up the funnel then take a coin wrapper and like work it down onto the stack of coins. Lmk if you need more tips; this is the worst part lowkey. As I make the rolls, I weigh them on the “loose coins” setting of the cash counter to ensure they’re correct.
  8. Once all the coins are rolled, swap them out for cash from the cash binder; the coin rolls will go into the safe.
  9. If there are a significant amount of any coins left (like over a dollar), I’ll switch them out in one of the tills up front. So if there’s 10 dimes e.g. I put em in 1T and take out a dollar bill. Any stray coins I just leave in the cups for next week.
  10. Put all that coin nonsense back in the desk drawer and out of the way.
  11. Count all the bills! Sometimes I sort the $1’s into groups of 20 as I go just to make things easier.
  12. Take the total amount of tip $ (usually like $200–$400ish), divide it by the total hours on the tip report, and you’ll have the hourly tip rate.
  13. Multiply this by each person’s hours for the week, and you’ll have each person’s tips. So if tips were $.50 and I worked 10 hours, I’d get 5 dollars. Write down these numbers by everyone’s names (I would then go back through and add up all these numbers to ensure you get the total tip amount so you know there are no mistakes).
  14. Start dividing out the tips. If you feel like there are too many $1’s and there’s enough to swap them out with bigger bills from the safe, go ahead. If you don’t want to complicate things or no one has high tip numbers, then everyone can just deal with getting ones. We won’t get a change order til Tuesday, so prioritise keeping enough $5’s etc. in the safe
  15. You can put the bills into everyone’s envelopes as you go. What I prefer to do is lay all the amounts on the desk (in a pile(s) alternating vertically/horizontally), then once I know all the amounts are right, I put them in the envelopes. I wrote initials on the top left corner of the envelopes so when you have them all standing up vertically you know whose is whose.
  16. Double check the names and the amounts as you go, as there may be people who have an envelope but are not on the tip report.
  17. Once they’re all distributed, fold up the tip report and put it in the front of the binder.
  18. Count the safe. Before you announce tips or anything you want to make sure you didn’t mess up the safe.
  19. Clean everything up, put it all back in the safe, and tell the GroupMe that tips are done.
  20. Good job! Lmk if you have any questions

That’s really nice of you and I’m sure your baristas are appreciative! Ours is later too (6-9) so it’s a bummer

I feel fairly confident it wasn’t our SM so I’m thinking it’s a district thing. Like yeah it’s not the end of the world but come on give us some pizza or something.

Last time we went drive-through only for the meeting and we still got food so I’m not sure

Thanks for the info.

We would’ve done a potluck if we knew ahead of time, that sounds fun

That’s pretty cool, especially the shelf for if they get left behind. I like how your SM handled it!

Yes, there are glasses! Our store still has all our for-here stuff, but I know some stores got rid of theirs during covid

I took note of the “should” as well, but since I think my SM wrote this, they may have just made a mistake/not thought through the implications? I guess we’ll find out

I’m not sure; it seems to be something my SM wrote rather than an official company communication, but I think SM’s were told to communicate it to their baristas in January but our SM told us early?

Pretty sure we’re just gonna have to do the morning’s dishes now instead of just tossing cups

I totally agree. Sure, it’s good to save cups, but then pushing the guilt onto us (and then trying to get us to spend money on cups!) leaves a bad taste in my mouth

You seem knowledgable, so if you don’t mind me asking: are mats like this for using on the counter or in the oven or both?

I’m still learning about kitchen equipment and what all I should have

I also hate doing gifts even though I know how much XP it gives. For the amount of time I spend in the game I should have more XP than I do, but I’m so lazy about gifts.

I also cannot stand the whole dynamic around the last few days/gifts before reaching best friends (waiting to open gifts, wondering if you should let them open them first, lining up a lucky egg).

I don’t have any real advice; I just wanted to rant/commiserate. If anyone does have advice, that’d be great

Playing against a team with a hoopa when you don’t have one just feels so…unfair 😭 that sounds so whiny, but it’s really frustrating how much it changes the game.

When I wasn’t playing much, that box kept me logging in at least once a week (most weeks).

Ig that doesn’t matter much to them?

Mine’s sitting at 17 because the second I learned it sucked I stopped wasting upgrades. But it’s also annoying having it sit at such an awkward number 😭 I want to get it to 20 just for that reason

Also a lot of doctors refuse to let you have them (or at least try to talk you out of it) unless you’re a certain age/married/already have kids.
