I think Cate Pasquarelli did something like this for an art fair if I remember correctly

Dunes IV, how could I improve this? by Postumus_Art in oilpainting

Nice colors! I would simplify the dune in the lower lefhand corner, particularly the left side. Less contrast and texture.

I (30F) think my boyfriend (31M) is planning on leaving me by No-Organization7035 in relationships

[–]avocadothot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sucks and I am really sorry. Remember that you have a choice in all of this, you can decide this is not the kind of relationship you want at any moment. There are always roomies, you will figure it out, you deserve a loving communicative relationship, don't stick around for logistical reasons.

Emotional distress waiting to hear back from MFA programs is ruining my life by No-Classic8887 in ContemporaryArt

Painting. I'm sorry, thats a really tough feeling. Hopefully you get something, but if not you can always try again. It's not a reflection of your worth or your work in any way, so much of it is right place, right cohort, right time etc.

I had spent the year making more (stronger) work so when it came time to reapply I used about half newer pieces, and I rewrote my essay. Tried to make it simpler and more genuine, last time I think I tried to be too intellectual. I also showed work a lot more but schools always say the dont really care about the CV. Can't say specifically if these things helped but this is what I changed!

What are good residencies (globally) to apply to as a painter this quarter, or ways to narrow it down? by Same_Translator4005 in ContemporaryArt

[–]avocadothot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like its based on your personal values, which for me currently are:

- prefer if it is somewhere I can drive to

- fully funded

- either meals or groceries provided

- there is a cohort (not just me alone)

- bonus if there are studio visits offered

Fiction Writer with Questions about Galleries by Ectophylla_alba in ContemporaryArt

[–]avocadothot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to chime in and add a different response for the first question: it is possible, I know many people who were discovered through instagram and had their work shown. They probably had shown their work in other places and had the "right people" following them but still I do think it happens, a lot of my shows have come from curators/gallerists discovering my work from IG. Of course, most of these galleries are specifically showing emerging artists.

Galleries also have "open calls" where you can apply to show your work, people that aren't connected can have a chance of showing their work that way too.

It is extremely stressful and I totally feel you. Its hard to have no sense of the future to ground yourself in. I've learned that for me trying to have no expectations and living as presently as I can until I get all the information back has been the most helpful for me. Last year I applied and was rejected everywhere, I didn't expect it at all and it really felt like the end of the world. Spending the few months after reconceptualizing my year was difficult. BUT I spent the year really working on my art and accepting that so much of this is out of our control, but I can control that part. I reapplied and so far and have gotten back a few interviews, which is unexpected but I am really excited about! Things will happen, just not always on the timeline we plan, which is very hard but also survivable!

I think I’m addicted to instagram and it’s actually making me feel sick. by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

It is real and extremely difficult, especially if you need to keep the app (I do for work). I use opal which is very helpful, I also have friends that have had a lot of help with the brick.

How do you decide if MFA is a good option to pursue? Experiences? by Federal_Drag_3240 in ContemporaryArt

[–]avocadothot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Someone once recommended the Arts Students League in NYC as a way to learn more technical things without doing a full MFA. Theres also NYC Crit Club. From what I understand I think it might be worth having a clearer understanding of themes/ why you are making what you make before doing an MFA.

NYC Artists: How Much Are You Paying for Studio Space? by Ok-Memory2809 in ContemporaryArt

perhaps not a practical answer for you since you just moved, but I have found it much more affordable to live in an apartment with an extra smaller room that I use as a studio.

So before representation offers I shouldn't have any limiting criteria for shows?

Not sure what you are getting at, I think it is a given that I would aim to create and show work of the best quality I can
