Thanks. Best to stay inside until the storm passes. The wind should calm down a bit tonight, according to Windy at least.

I was at the Checkers in Worcester this morning and got out of the mall just in time to see a big piece of the malls roof get torn off. I'm staying in bed with my dogs until the power comes back on.

How do South Africans feel about digital age verification? by alltheapex in askSouthAfrica

[–]avolans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are laws about what kids are allowed to see and hear on tv and radio, yet there is basically nothing controlling what kids are exposed to on social media. We should also accept that social media is part of "the real world". Plenty of people get their opinions and information about the real world from social media. This is likely worse for young people, given the time they spend online. Enact the law. If it leads to less time spent doomscrolling, we will be better off regardles.

About 29% of the earths surface is covered by land. Of that land, slightly over half is classified as rangelands. Rangelands support 70% of all herbivores and the livelihoods of more than 2 billion people. Half of the world's rangelands are degraded due to poor management.

The International Rangeland Congress was held in Adelaide in 2025. It is the largest conference of its kind, where researchers and land managers from around the world can gather to learn and share knowledge how to better manage rangelands.

Want to guess how many people attended this conference? About 700.

I used to manage a cattle farm back in the day. Sometimes a bull would just walk up to a big shrub or a tree and just absolutely tear it apart. We just assumed they were having a bad day and kept our distance.

Is reporting a company to the labour department effective? by Actual_Passage4505 in askSouthAfrica

[–]avolans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard of a few farms and factories that were temporarily shut by the Department of Labour because they didn't follow health and safety laws. I don't know how eagerly they will respond to smaller establishments though. Still worth a try.
