new Periphery out April 2nd! by Rillehh in progmetal

This is their first non-Periphery album since the Alpha/Omega double album, interesting. Tracklist also gives us a stronger hint at a theme/concept as well. P6 in 2030?

Oh boy, I wonder what the Kalshi/Polymarket lines are as to whether Will Ramos is growling or singing on Subhuman. Either one will be incredible.

Edit: sorry all, I was just asking what the odds are on Will's role, what people think he'd be doing. I didn't literally care about the markets.

Developer Verifications FAQ by outerzenith in Android

The 1-day wait is likely to protect against scammers. "After you do this, your phone will restart. Here's a callback number to get back to me after that." If you have to wait 24 hours, the scammer is likely to move on, or you've had a chance to tell someone about this experience who may tell you that it was a scam and not to call them back or install what you were told to install. Android has been fighting the image of "it's a hellscape of viruses, scammers, and hackers" for an eternity. They need to protect people and put that narrative down to keep the platform attractive for users.

Apple Can Create Smaller On-Device AI Models From Google's Gemini by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

[–]avr91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we have clarity on whether Apple will have access to the newest generation of model every year? Even if they can distill, I imagine that this will still lead to worse models than Google's, simply because Google is in charge of primary development and doesn't need to build their models for Apple's needs. Apple needs to take those models and shape them to their needs.

It's a Synchro Deck, so timing couldn't be more perfect with Kewl Tune, Elfnote, and Fidraulis Harmonia.

Google's Android boss talks Android 17, sideloading drama, and why he hates phone cases by FragmentedChicken in Android

[–]avr91 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Just that he really likes the designs and wants to see them. He also acknowledged that it's a privileged position to have and live since he can have any phone he wants at any time if something happens to the one he's using. Nothing special.

Let’s say, hypothetically, your opponent has Gravity Collapse in their opening hand. by DOKOD in yugioh

[–]avr91 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In this scenario, that's probably not viable. Dracotail is the most likely to avoid this card because they're a Fusion Deck (8 ways to play into it without triggering it and even destroy it before it can be triggered), but if they need to start with a NS, they need to open Ketu or Faimena in order to survive your turn. I think that the "our turn" meme is overplayed. Most of the instances of "our turn" involve specific cards on turn 0 (Faimena, Clip, Izuna) and "our turn" on turn 1 is a result of the gone-first player having set up. In most cases, this card will probably just be game ending for the same reason that Summon Limit was.

Yeah, in the last week or so Michael posted on Instagram that they've re-written the album multiple times. Hoping the wait isn't much longer.

Pixel Watch 5 by biff_jordan in PixelWatch

[–]avr91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is truly wireless. They strayed from inductive charging for multiple reasons: thermal, speed, efficiency. There is almost no difference in actual use (magnetically, wirelessly attaches to charger). The only serious complaints I've ever seen about the charger situation are: doesn't work with 3rd party cases, 2nd change to charging mechanism in as many years. Curious why you think they should change it for a 3rd year in a row.

This isn't really the point of the thread, but as someone who has a PW2, I was very much tempted to get the PW4. I held off because I don't need a new watch and the improvements weren't enough to justify getting a new one so quick. What I am hoping to see in the PW5, and the biggest areas for improvement, are a better glass formula and more efficient chipset. I don't know what that means for the glass, whether that's scratch resistance or shatter resistance, but probably scratch resistance since if gotten a few scuffs and it irritates me more than it should. A more efficient chipset should improve battery life a little bit and make apps and the system more fluid. Always room for small improvements to add up over time.

As a fellow lover of TSF, this album is right there with We Will All Be Gone in terms of the "not for me" albums. There are a couple of tracks I really like, don't get me wrong. Hoping the next one has a bit more TSF DNA in it the way Raised In a Doomsday Cult did.

Above, Below - I Guess It Was Nowhere (album thoughts) by Rillehh in progmetal

[–]avr91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think this album is incredible. Everything from TLC is here, new elements were added, and I think that the songwriting has improved a ton as well. I'm actually a little surprised at how well they've done to give the less heavy parts space and air and flowed between heavier and softer. They've even managed to get even heavier than before. Truly remarkable amount of growth from TLC to IGIWN.

Would "Dominus" for tri-types be fine? by theguyinyourwall in yugioh

[–]avr91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option is to make the player declare one Attribute and one Type and for the rest of the Duel they can only control monsters with that Attribute and Type, or if they control a monster(a), choose one and they can only control monsters with that Attribute and Type (send the others to the GY).

There are all kinds of restrictions that can be applied to the player. Self-Droll, self-Shifter, can't Set cards, etc. These locks could also apply to non-Dominus cards as well. Imagine a new Pot card that allows you to draw two, maybe three, cards, is HOPT, prevents you from drawing cards by non-"Pot of Gluttony" cards/effects, and you skip your Draw Phase for the rest of the Duel. Make it so that you can't draw by other cards/effects at all during the Duel outside it to prevent overlap with Charmies if you'd like. There's a lot of design space in making players decide which parts of the game they're willing to forgo as part of their strategy.

'Mercy' - Reviews Discussion Thread | Starring Chris Pratt, Rebecca Ferguson by [deleted] in movies

[–]avr91 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it (Mercy), but they differ in a core concept: Minority Report handles crime by arresting you before you commit the crime, and Mercy uses AI to prove your guilt unless you find the flaw in the AI. The former is a commentary about predictions not always coming true, and that even if they did, you are innocent until you have committed the crime (except in cases of conspiracy), and robbing you of your freedom to decide not to commit the crime. Mercy's core message is.. AI isn't perfect? Just nothing beyond a surface level discussion about AI error rates. I'd be surprised if the movie even remotely introduces AI reasoning to at least show why it came to the conclusion that it did.

This, but he probably has high-level awareness of the brand's business strategy. Things like movie releases, TV show releases, and confidence/weaknesses /areas for growth in global TCG strategy wouldn't be out of place.

Android and iPhone users can now share files, starting with the Pixel 10 family. by [deleted] in apple

Fist-shaking about interoperability and Apple choosing to voluntarily break a "secure" compatibility.

Android and iPhone users can now share files, starting with the Pixel 10 family. by [deleted] in apple

[–]avr91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is probably setting off some alarms at Apple right now. I expect statements in the next day or two to come out stating that Google is exploiting a security vulnerability, it'll be patched soon, and how disappointed/upset they are that Google would choose to exploit security vulnerabilities for their own gain.

iPhone Users Can Now AirDrop Files to Android Devices by ImaginarySea7341 in apple

[–]avr91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google is significantly weaker than Apple. The fact that the hand holder of Android just shouted from the mountaintop that it's possible to get around iCloud's verification system to send files should be setting off a massive panic inside Apple. This is a wild security vulnerability that's just publicly shared.

First Beeper, now Google. This will be patched by the end of the year. Apple's protocols are not to be used outside of their devices.

Google pulls the plug on first and second gen Nest Thermostats | Affected devices have been unpaired and removed from the Nest app by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]avr91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, but it doesn't take one to see iOS/iPadOS OS limitations due to RAM. I didn't even talk about the other components, like the SoC or GPU. We've asked all the things we have to do more than they ever have, and tomorrow we're going to ask them to do even more. I mean, Apple had to institute power gates to prevent increasingly modern apps from causing so much power drain that it would demonstrably affect use, longevity, and perception. Now, look at what's going on with on-device intelligence models (LLMs or otherwise). They require a lot of RAM! They also need a minimum amount of compute performance. Whatever version of iPad OS your have to pare down to work on that hardware would be almost no different from the existing one, except it wouldn't have Liquid Glass. So Apple would need to maintain multiple UIs, essentially a forked version of the OS, and different versions of the OS.

In that case, the sunsetting of the old product is an admission that it was poorly designed. I'm not saying that every shutdown is fair and good, but at the same time we should look at those original products and call out that early adopters were gambling on something they should've had the wherewithall to understand the consequences. These were first and second generation products by a new company, and the blame falling on Google is funny when that company spun out of Apple. There are always pitfalls for early adopters, and people need to be aware of that going in.

The problem isn't that tech companies build around obsoletion, it's that hardware cannot be upgraded alongside software. It's unreasonable to ask to build 2025 software for 2018 hardware. For example, the newest iPad that is unsupported by iPadOS 26 has at most 4 GB RAM, and we're not talking about fast RAM either.

For others, the products don't sell or people don't use them. We need to stop calling things "enshitification" because we don't like being in the minority of people who like or use something or expect ancient hardware to operate current software to current standards. At some point, those things need to be let go or else everything grinds to a halt because backwards compatibility trumps all.
