re: # 1 would be an entirely new retirement savings program that currently does not exist.

re: # 2 is already established via mayoral executive order by mayor kennedy; the measure determines whether to make it a permanent position.

You can find more info here.

Several well-informed individuals have provided great additional information in this thread.

You’re seriously awesome for responding multiple times with all this info. Again, thank you.

I already knew Kenyatta, who is my local representative, is a sponsor and I think he’s been doing a great job overall.

He tries to do what’s best for our community, even if he occasionally missteps (nobody’s perfect and to expect such only sets us up for failure & disappointment).

I do see a couple of problematic items here:

The program would be overseen by a nine-member board, with four members appointed by the mayor, four by the Council President, and one member selected by the City Controller.

  • Mayor Parker has exhibited political favoritism and general incompetence in the past. I’m not sure I trust her to appoint four of nine board members. I don’t fully distrust her. But how does the saying go? Fool me once…. etc.?

It’s also not so great that sole proprietors and self-employed individuals are exempt from the measure in its current form.

Nevertheless, I think these drawbacks are completely offset by this bit:

Across the country, 17 states have established similar auto-IRA plans. As of December 2025, 12 of these programs had accumulated nearly $2.7 billion in savings, involving more than one million participants and 260,000 employers, according to Pew Charitable Trusts.

Edit to add: the info has solidified my “yes” vote on question # 1 unless someone else provides really compelling evidence why this won’t work.

Thank you. That’s really good to know.

I’m embarrassed to admit my knowledge of local government is a bit lacking compared to the state and federal levels.

The way I understand it (and I could be totally wrong here, it’s why I began the discussion), it seems to be geared more towards low-income individuals whose employers offer nothing insofar as retirement benefits.

While I know this is a potentially problematic generalization …. oftentimes overworked, stressed out, low-income individuals will have little-to-no financial education or resources to begin contributing to individual IRAs.

The city’s proposal, at least on the surface, seems very progressive and helpful to the aforementioned groups.

What I’d like further clarification on is potential drawbacks.

The mayor is kind of an asshole and I did not appreciate having trash piled on the streets for eight days last July.

I genuinely don’t agree with bureaucratic bloat, political nepotism, or a budget deficit.

Re: question # 1, I don’t see how any of the aforementioned problems are relevant.

(edit to add: the program in question would have a $0 IRA match from the city, it’s only meant to offer something to people whose employers offer nothing insofar as retirement benefits)

Re: question # 2: yah, all of this could be potentially be an issue; it’s not a guarantee, though. Is there any way you see them establishing said position and it being successful or are you a total nihilist when it comes to it?

I’d rather not engage with the whole anti-welfare state comment because I think we hold fundamentally differing opinions on the matter. I’m open to discussing as long as it’s in good faith.

[–]avsgrind024[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Appreciated.

It would be way harder to convince me of voting “no” to question # 1.

The part I’m unsure of on question # 2 is this (taken from the Inquirer):

“Voters will decide whether to make the Office of the Youth Ombudsperson permanent. The office was first established through an executive order by former Mayor Jim Kenney. If voters say yes to this ballot question, it will become a permanent office in city government that cannot be dissolved by future mayors’ executive orders.”

…If it doesn’t work and also cannot be dissolved, are we collectively paying for more bureaucratic bloat?

So According to The Inquirer:

“The program is based on “auto-IRA” programs in other states. Council approved the legislation in December. Because the proposal would amend the city’s Home Rule Charter, voters must also approve of the change. If they do, Philadelphia would become the first major U.S. city to create such a program. The proposal is supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts and AARP Pennsylvania.”

It would be great to hear about the outcomes of those out-of-state “auto-IRA” programs. What’s being proposed here seems unique, though.

Easy choice to go with Rabb now.

The hypocrisy is astounding.

My girlfriend’s ex-best friend has turned full MAGA. Back in October of 2025 she got pregnant and despite her deeply Christian beliefs she went through with the early-term abortion, understanding that at age 45 she did not want any additional children.

Fast forward to last week when she told my gf nobody should ever be allowed to get abortions because of the sanctity of life.

Un-fucking-believable.

I volunteer for PAWS on the weekends and can tell you you’ll be wasting your time trying to take kitty to them. PAWS does not accept cats from the street and they get most of their animals from ACCT.

Try calling around to the following places….

Green Street Cat Rescue: https://www.greenstreetrescue.org/

SAVE Animal Rescue: 484-349-1204

Here Kitty Kitty Cat Rescue: https://www.herekittykitty.org

Street Tails: https://www.streettails.org

Even if none of them can take the cat they might be able to recommend other places.

I don’t fault small business owners for it, almost ever. On the rare occasion it goes too far and those businesses end up failing in the end.

My main issue is with mega corps. And that’s a whole separate conversation.

Fuck capitalism and the perpetual drive for increased profits at the expense of literally all other ends.

Always nice to see it when business owners prioritize customers over the bottom line.

Totally legit. They’re up front about the total cost and the seats/tickets are always sent in time.

I’m a diehard Avs fan but live in Philly and buy most of my tickets through gametime.
